Best Wearable 2024 Fall Fashion Trends
As we age, many women tend to fall into either the trap of adding too many trends to their looks or not enough. It can often feel a bit like Goldilocks’ hunt for “just right”. Remaining true to your core aesthetic while adding a sprinkling of new trends is usually the most successful formula for finding the best wearable fall fashion trends.
To be clear, you certainly don’t need to incorporate trends into your wardrobe after 50, but they can help to keep your look modern, which keeps you looking relevant.
If you want to dabble in fall trends, I suggest you add one piece or a nod to a trend. If this is the year that many trends appeal to you, go for it, but keep your body silhouette in mind so you choose flattering shapes. If a specific color is a trend, and it’s not flattering to your complexion, try adding a touch of it in an accessory away from your face. 2024 Wearable Trends For Fall
English Prep Trend

The English prep trend is a great opportunity for you to bring out some of the classic, fitted blazers you may already have in your wardrobe. It’s a timeless aesthetic featuring tweeds, cables, and plaids. You can make this as campy as you like or just think classic, and you’ll be on the right track. Trousers are still going strong and work beautifully with the English Prep vibe, as do tweed and cabled sweaters.
Leopard Trend

On the flip side of prep is leopard print, and it’s everywhere for fall. Women seem to either love or loathe this print, finding it either tacky or classy. It’s one of the few prints I do wear in moderation. A little leopard goes a long way, so you can get a lot of bang with a simple leopard shoe, belt, or bag. On the other hand, if leopard is your superpower, this could be your season to flaunt it. I include cheetah in this trend because the look is very similar.
Leopard and cheetah prints are common in shades of orange, brown, and golden hues, but this year, I’m spotting (bad pun) lots of options in cool tones.
Layers

Layers aren’t exactly a groundbreaking trend for fall, but this season, we’re seeing some fresh takes on how to wear them. I’m excited to see ponchos and wraps making a comeback. I’ll be bringing out my cashmere wraps and poncho for the first crisp day we have. J. Crew makes a fabulous cashmere wrap, as does Quince.
This triple fleece capelet just landed in my cart for fall in the elephant color. I know from experience that the fabric is super comfortable and easy to layer over different outfits.
Breton Stripes

Breton stripes began as a navy and white striped uniform in the French Navy back in the 1800s. Over time, these iconic stripes moved from naval attire to the fashion scene, thanks in part to style legends like Coco Chanel. We’re not just going to be seeing stripes in tees and sweaters this fall but also in outerwear like blazers, lady jackets, cardigans, and shoes.

Being by the coast means cool breezes, so I’ve been wearing this cropped knit peacoat on repeat, budget-friendly option here.
Ballet Flats
Ballet flats are on trend, again. When did they ever go out of style? I think of them as one of those staples that never go out of style and are always a reliable choice. I find these Margaux Demi ballet flats incredibly comfortable and love that they come in wide, and narrow options. They’re a totally classic, and the adjustable cord bow allows me to loosen it on my left foot for even more comfort over my bunion.
Slingback Shoes

Slingback, lady-like shoes are a huge trend for fall 2024. Many have heels, but low-heeled and flat versions are also plentiful. These similar slingbacks by Vionic look even more comfy because I know they have a cushioned insole and arch support.
Skirts
Skirts are having a moment this fall, and I hope to add a few more to my wardrobe this year. Denim skirts have been hugely popular for several seasons, and the trend continues into fall. This one from Chico’s looks to have a nice slim fit with a modest front slit that makes it easy to walk in.

I’ve been enjoying this affordable Allegra K denim skirt all summer. The denim is soft, and it has an amazing amount of stretch, so it’s really comfy. I love its modest length that you can easily adjust with a quick snip with your scissors.

This longer denim midi skirt by Farm Rio would be a better length to wear with the knee boot trend that’s making a comeback. It has flattering front seams and a generous slit which makes it easy to walk in.
MORE SKIRTS
If denim skirts aren’t quite your thing, there are plenty of other great options for fall. There are lots of textures to choose from, such as wool, tweed, suede, faux leather, etc. I found this forest green silk skirt that would check multiple trend boxes. There’s a wide range of materials and styles out there, so you’re sure to find something that fits your taste.
7. Wide Leg Jeans
Wide pant legs aren’t going anywhere soon. They’ll continue to be popular all fall and winter. Some of you are not fans, but if you like them, you’ll have lots of options this fall.

If you’re stumped on how to style wide-leg pants, you may enjoy this post with tips for how to wear wide-leg pants. I love wide-legs because they add balance to my broad shoulders.
SOME GREAT WIDE-LEG PANTS
Other Popular 2024 Fall Trends:
- Fringe: Western-inspired fringe additions to items like purses and jackets are making an appearance.
- Feathers: Think feather cuffs and hems on tops and dresses.
- Faux Fur: I think we’ll be seeing lots of this, especially in shades of brown.
Which of these trends are you most excited to see this fall?

Trends I’m looking forward to buying are leopard flats and cap toe shoes. I’ve already purchased more Breton stripes. The item I absolutely abhor is the denim skirt. I have a rectangular body type and I look completely stocky and shapeless in them.
They’re a challenge for me at my current weight too. I’m up about 10 pounds and it makes my shape squarer than usual.
As I was shopping my closet, I found a deep raspberry and black leopard top from several years ago. I will try wearing it again this year and see if I still like it! I also have one that is gray and black that I like. Being a summer with ash blonde hair, the warm colors just don’t work for me. Keep your eye out…there are other options but it may take a while to find one.
Thanks for the great post, Jennifer. You look great in the “Layers” outfit. Those skinny jeans are so flattering on you! Very slimming.
I too, hope you can show some cool toned animal prints!
I never wear horizontal stripes of any kind. They are not flattering on me.
I am so glad to hear that ballet flats are coming back as I never stopped wearing them!
Love the wrap with the hat! Wish there was a way to “Like” someone else’s Comments similar to Facebook :-). I’m so often in agreement with what others are saying.
May we have an update on how your doing with oral minoxidil? I recently started taking it myself and was hoping for some good news! Thanks.
The oral minoxidil has made all the difference in the world!! I am ecstatic as my hair no longer falls out in handfuls. It takes months to kick in but when it does, it is a miracle. Stick with it!
Great article, yes I’m older (74) but look kind of not my age, on a good day late 60’s… I do have a more classic style to my wardrobe, but just ordered a pair of wide leg jeans and will resurrect some blazers in my closet. As I still lean to very casual I try not to follow trends, unless they fit into what I already have. I love sling back shoes and wear them whenever I can…you look great in all the pictures posted. Just a question, if you answer. I tried an AI app for my colors and was identified as warm spring…not my color choices except for the pink tones..I love my black and white which is not supposed to work……how do you feel about AI apps for styling and color…can’t wait for fall
The apps can give you a general idea, but to be honest, your intuition is probably a better tool. Which colors make your complexion look clear and what colors give you joy?
Thanks Jennifer, you just confirmed what I thought, use your instinct. So, it’s black , white , pinks for me…..l
Love this post! You have some great ideas that I can style from my closet. Denim skirts with knee-high boots – so 1980! I’m still on the lookout for one I like. Trends I will ignore: fringe, feathers, and faux fur. I keep thinking I’ll add a leopard (etc.) belt or bag or slingback shoe, but every time, I spend my money on something else – lol.
I think I am now in the “elderly” category since I am over 70! Although at this point I think you are not elderly until age of 85! lol. I think Fall clothes suit you really well. I think you are more comfortable in these styles than summer styles. Just my opinion. I don’t like wide leg pants nor stripes. My winter and fall wardrobe is limited since i live in Florida.
LOL, I often feel elderly and that’s ok. It’s a blessing to age. 🙂
I love pale grey and navy shades for cooler weather. At 5’ 1 1/2” tall I need to find petite everything. I wear cardigans as a third layer but need to find shorter ones than I have. Mine are all boyfriend style which doesn’t go well with all of my wider leg jeans. I did buy a few turtleneck tees which would look good under short cardigans. It is still too warm here for jeans but today I’m wearing white linen long pants and a white tee with navy ikat print. You do look like a woman of mystery in your black hat and outfit.
Boyfriend cardigans would be overwhelming with wider jeans. There are lots of shorter ones around now.
I will probably try the blazer look. I really like your striped one. I’m not a fan of wide leg pants so I’ll stick to straight legs but I do love the leopard print. The cashmere shawl looks so pretty on you but I’m not sure how it would look on someone 5’1. Do they come just one size only?
They’re usually just one size but dimensions do differ so I would read the descriptions.
I’d rather be an “older woman” than “elderly” 😂😂😂
lol
Do like the idea of the return of wraps as can adjust to work with just about any other style similar to shorter jackets/blazers which I’m happy to see a selection of. Whereas not sure about ‘flat’ sling back shoes as have had problems in the past keeping the strap positioned on the heel unless with a higher shoe instep BUT do like them and feel they would even work for the Spring season. As to ballet flats do notice that they range from textured, studded, patent, suede and even velvet with various toe types which is a plus as well, however will be limiting myself as our Fall season is cool so will be opting more for loafers or a regular slip on shoe so I don’t have to fuss with buckles either. (I’m ten years older than you and don’t have the patience… lol! Also we are stuck wearing boots all Winter so I avoid them as much as I can until then.) Last but not least; understand suede is also going to be popular for the Fall (lots of it on the European runways) so will be deep diving into my closet as have a few classic pieces + accessories in it already.
-Brenda-
I much prefer suede over leather, so I will be deep diving too.
Love your content! Do you think stripes make people look wider/heavier? I tend to shy away from them.
I find wide ones can so I prefer narrower ones
Love your outfit with the gray hat – you are rocking it for sure! I usually think all the clothing you’re modeling looks great, but I have to say those 2 denim skirts on you look very frumpy to me.
I wanted to find a post you made when you were discussing Athleta’s Brooklyn pants. Is there anyway I can search for them within your blog?
Thanks
Yes, you can search the name in my search box. Or just try Athleta. I’ve written about them a lot becauce I love them. You could start here
Can you tell us about the sandals you’re wearing in the Allegra Denim Skirt photo? I know you’ve shared about the style before but would not have a clue how to locate them again. Thank you.
My sandals are by Soul Naturalizer here
I really appreciate your insights and suggestions for the upcoming fall season. I would like to add a versatile belt to my accessories. Do you have suggestions on where to find belts?
Most brands have belts. I love my J. Crew onw and have a few from Talbots, as well as Nordstrom. Banana Republic also has great ones
First, thanks for your tips for ‘older’ women. I have little short feet (6.5) plus a malformed ankle/heel due to being crushed in an accident. How can I successfully wear pointy toe shoes (budget conscious) without them being painful? I tried buying larger but that wasn’t the answer.
You could try with classic comoft brands like Clarks but if they’re painful, I would skip the trend. It’s just not worth it.
I also have recovered from a crushed ankle…..I have started buying 2 different sizes, medium width and wide width, to get some comfort. Sometimes it helps.
Please share some cool toned leopard prints! 🦄 Especially in something other than scarves!
I will as I find them!
I adore your outfit with the wrap – simple yet sophisticated!
We woke up to very fall-like temps this morning, so I may start to put away my most summery clothes today. As for fall trends, I can easily do the wrap, stripes and blazer from what is already in my closet. Oh, I do so love fall fashion.
I love fall fashion best!
The black hat with the cashmere wrap look great and you look like a woman of mystery! Gave me the courage to try it.
Awesome
Great post thanks. Trends for me, layers, skirts, blazers. A touch of animal print, belt and shoes.
GM
I have been wearing the wider leg jeans for a bit now. They are flattering on me. Possibly add a shawl. I am interested in the little grey booties you are wearing in the black shawl picture. Thanks
I am 68 also.
Maribeth
They are quite old bnut gray is coming back so more will be available this fall
