Classics From Frank and Eileen That Layer Into Fall

This post is sponsored by Frank and Eileen

I’ve learned that layers are more important than ever when living by the coast. One minute, it’s sunny and warm, and the next, it’s breezy and cool. We often travel back and forth on little water taxis here, which can feel downright chilly, so I find myself reaching for my classics from Frank and Eileen that layer so easily. Their casual vibe is perfect for my lifestyle here by the coast and will help me transition to fall when we get back to our second home in California.

My Favorite Pieces for Layering from Frank & Eileen

EILEEN SHIRT size S c/o

One of my favorite layering pieces from Frank & Eileen is their Eileen Shirt. I’ve always loved a great denim shirt, and the fit of this one is especially nice. The shirttail hemline gives it a more feminine shape and helps my legs look longer. The relaxed denim is soft and breathable, making it comfortable to wear even on warmer days. I love to roll up the sleeves for a casual, laid-back vibe, but you could easily button them if it’s really cold.

PATRICK POPOVER TRIPLE FLEECE HENLEY size S c/o

With the weather changing throughout the day, especially this time of year, I like to carry a third piece of clothing with me at all times. This popover sweatshirt has a great elevated look with the henley styling. The triple fleece fabric washes like a dream and feels cozy, but it’s not too warm. I love the way the white pops against the denim shirt and breaks up the monochromatic look, no matter how I wear it: over my shoulders, around my waist, or layered on top.

DERRY ILLUSION PULL-ON PANT IN ITALIAN DREAM DENIM 2013 WASH c/o

When these Derry Illusion pants arrived, I didn’t realize how much I would love them. I’ve been living in wider-leg jeans all summer, so these have been a delightful discovery. They have a contoured waistband that sits just below your natural waist, tons of stretch, and no buttons, pockets, or zippers to bulge, which makes them perfect for layering over. The slim, straight leg is extremely flattering and keeps it’s shape all day.

The first time I wore them, they felt a smidge too long, so I simply snipped 2″ off the bottom, and now they’re perfect! The seams have stayed closed, and I easily recreated the slight fray with a quick shake and slap against my hand. Frank and Eileen share how they do it here, but since I’ve been sewing for over 50 years, I was able to skip the tape and wing it.

MARY WHITE DENIM DRESS size S / COTTON SWEATER size S c/o / DERRY ILLUSION 2013 WASH JEANS size 29 c/o

I’ve also worn these same Derry Illusion pants under my white denim Mary Dress. I’ve been wearing and loving this dress all summer, so by layering it over slim pants, I’ll get more use out of it going into the fall. This dress also has the shirttail hemline, which I adore.

MONTEREY COTTON SWEATER in CREAM size S c/o

I popped this luxurious cotton sweater over the top as my third layer. This Monterey sweater is made from soft, smooth Italian cotton and knit by artisans in California. It’s the perfect piece for going from summer to fall and never pills. The rolled funnel neck draws interest up top, especially when the collar is popped from the dress, giving it that effortless layered look.

The key to successful layering, whether it’s for the seasons or living by the coast, is all about choosing the right pieces. Frank & Eileen’s lightweight pieces make it easy to add or remove layers as needed, ensuring you stay comfortable all day long.

My love for Frank and Eileen grows with each piece I add to my wardrobe. They’re an investment I am happy to make. They are a woman-owned certified B-Corp that cares about the planet and every hand that touches their product. They also have a Giving Pledge that will donate $10 million over the next ten years toward educating the female leaders of the future.

  1. The slip on “denim” shoes are super cute .. complete the outfit. Are they true to size and have any arch support?

    1. What denim shoes Kathy?

      1. I believe she is referring to the blue shoes you are wearing in the post.

  2. Agree with Karen (below) that you wear the slim cut jean very well. As to their style; I find them very tempting as currently have two pairs of bottoms that have a ‘contour mid rise waistband’ but mine have a side zipper (as one pair is in faux leather and the other in a wool blend) and have to say they are so comfortable compared to those that have a conventional waistband. In regards to layering; because of the climate live in, mostly do. (Yes even in the summer if air conditioned environments deem it.)

    1. I’m a big fan of contoured waistbands too Brenda. Your faux leather ones sound lovely.

  3. I don’t foresee a time when I will be okay with frayed hems. Another trend I will sit out.

  4. I am gathering up my nerve to try one of the Patrick tops. I would not want to trust my scissor skills with those pants but they look good on you.

    1. Their shipping is free both ways so it’s easy to try them and discover if you love them. I highly recommnend anything in the triple fleece fabric.

  5. You do look very happy when upon Vancouver! My calves are still muscular from bicycling, skiing and hiking. I only walk now with our dog Trix. But skinny jeans are uncomfortable on me. I love the wider leg jeans even though I am 3” shorter than you. I learned from you to wear my jeans down kissing my shoes. My hips are slim so my legs look longer. I do love the column of blue denim. It is still very hot here in Colorado. I’m ready for fall clothes!

    1. I’m ready too. Isn’t it funny how we’re ready for the seasons before they arrive?

  6. I just ordered the Derry Illusion pant. Hope they look as nice on me as they do on you, Jennifer.

I’m warming up to Frank and Eileen, and have a few pieces I enjoy. Still have to get over my distaste for their awful ad copy, as I find it disrespectful to women my age. The one that reads, “‘My daughter tells me that I can wear these pants” particularly rubs me the wrong way. At 69 years old,
my daughter is not going to tell me what to wear.

    1. I have not seen those ads! At our age, the choice is ours. I am ordering them in black because I’ve been wearing the heck out of these blue ones.

  7. I had to laugh when you mentioned trimming down the length of your denim pants and recreating the frayed edge! I’ve been sewing for a long time also, and after the fray edge first showed up in fashion, I wasn’t sure I wanted to commit so I did the same thing with a pair of pants I already owned to test out the look. Those denim pants you are wearing really look nice on you. The denim on denim looks great!

    1. It’s taken me time to warn up to the frayed hems but now I like them.

  8. I really like your denim casual looks. I really love the funnel neck sweater however is is wayyyyy over the budget. Thanks. I enjoy your blog.

    1. I know it’s not in every woman’s budget, but I like to show all price points, because many of my readers do love them. Thanks for reading Rory.

  9. Love the all denim look!

  10. I am so excited to see this post! I have seriously been looking at the F&E. I have a few pieces and would like more. The sizing has been confusing to me so I am happy to see you posted the size you wear- especially in the Eileen shirt and pull on pants. I was looking at the triple fleece in the Eileen with fall around the corner. It’s truely investment dressing but I am willing if it truly works. I have come to peace with the unfinished edges. Thanks. Question though- what does c/o stand for?

    1. The triple fleece is my fav. I bought a jacket and henley dress to wear for travel last year and loved it so much I began buying their linen and denim. These are investments and pricey for sure, so I’m always delighted when they work with me and on rare occaioons send me clothes which is what the c/o means…care of.

    2. The clothes are nice. I just can’t rationalize spending $268 for a pair of jeans. But if anyone’s budget can afford to, go for it, and good for you.
I enjoy your blog and you are absolutely adorable! You look great in everything .

  11. Jennifer, these Derry jeans are the most flattering pants I’ve seen you wear. The slim leg is so nice looking on you, and makes your legs look longer and slim, great choice for petite ladies.

    1. Thank you so much. I really like the way these look too. I’m smaller on the bottom so showcasing that helps me look slimmer.

  12. I must admit the Frank and Eileen website have some very tempting clothing, but the price point (with the exchange rate) is a turn off. As for layering, I am un layering due to a sudden burst of warm winter weather. You always look so happy when in Vancouver and would not be surprised if you decided to make it your permanent home

    1. We do love it here! It must feel strange to read blogs with opposite weather than you have.
