Compliments and Cashmere

My life in suburbia doesn’t include passing a lot of construction zones. Even if it did, the classic cat calls and “hey baby” comments have long since faded from my 61-year-old experience and I like that just fine. They seldom felt flattering and usuallyĀ seemed creepy.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life

I did get a compliment from a construction worker yesterday which was a total surprise. We were passing on my sidewalk and he said, “nice outfit with that thingy on your shirt”. I chuckled and said thanks. It’s always nice to get a compliment. My how times have changed:)Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled life wearing cashmere poncho from Nordstrom

Later that day we had dinner at aĀ friendsĀ house and I got to break out my new Cashmere Poncho. I’m a new convert to ponchos and so glad I discovered them. They keep you warm and your hands free, but they’re not as hot as a sweater.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled life wearing Halogen Cashmere from Nordstrom

I bought this poncho at the Nordstrom Anniversary sale this summer. It’s a greatĀ quality and you can’t beat the price at 50% off!

The pin makes enough of a statement for me so I skipped a necklace. I’m testĀ driving red lipsticks on me but the verdict is not in… Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled Life wearing Munro booties

Open toed booties were my other nod to cooler temperatures. No socks required makes these perfect for our in-between season temps.Jennifer Connolly of A Well Styled life wearing Halogen cashmere

I’m really looking forward to the cool weather, and even the rain. It’s so much more fun to get dressed for cooler weather.

  1. Love your poncho and thingy….! The red lipstick looks great!

  2. I bought that poncho in black at the anniversary sale! Love your red lip stick,I can’t quite manage that look with red hair…but one way I have found to eear my poncho is to belt it. Run the belt behind the fabric in the back (next to you, it won’t show at all) and just belt the front of it. That way it creates a waist but your rear end view is not accented with a bunch of fabric. I think it looks really good and opens up more possibilities for accessories!

  3. I really like that Pomegranate shade on you. I’m trying out some new lipsticks, too – it takes some courage!

  4. Love cashmere, love grey! You definitely deserve compliments and I think the red lips really work with that poncho.
I’ve purchased my first red lipstick since traveling to Paris and it’s a great way to liven up a white shirt and jeans or give a pop of colour to basic black and greys.

    1. Thanks Leslie! I am finding red a fun alternative and working on discovering my best shade.

  5. You look FABULOUS and I love your glasses!!

  6. Linda Green says:

I love ponchos, but I’m never sure what to do with my (cross-body or shoulder strap) purse when I’m wearing one. If I wear the purse over the poncho, it really messes with the shape, and I can’t figure out what do with all that low-hanging underarm fabric that gets hung up in the strap. If I wear the purse under the poncho, then there’s a big lump. What do you do?

    1. I wear a shoulder strap over it and not a crossbody bag. That would look awkward. A hand-held satchel would work best as a clutch would still mess with the shape Linda.

  7. Love the red, very flattering! Recently bought a poncho and anxiously awaiting cooler temps in Austin to get to wear it.

  8. Your first paragraph brought back memories! I’m 65 and I discovered ponchos in my youth; back in the days when construction workers still whistled when I passed by, I haven’t had one in recent years though. That’s definitely something I’d like to add to my wardrobe.

  9. Kathleen O'Brien says:

Love the red lipstick – wonderful color on you. Love ponchos and ruanas, especially when the sleeves or tops are different kinds of shapes . Makes it much easier and more stylish than a sweater or cardigan. You’re looking lovely!

    1. Thank you Kathleen. That’s one of the things I like about them too! More forgiving also.

  10. I’m glad you haven’t cut your hair shorter, leave it longer. It is easier to manage than a bob, plus you can style it various ways, not so with a short bob.

    1. I’ve flipped my part to the other side which is helping give it more volume. So far so good.

  11. Love this post Jennifer and the story about the construction worker with the compliment. Since moving to Texas and being called ‘Ma’am’ every where is something new that I don’t really like hehe. šŸ™‚ But that’s life. I’m a huge fan of ponchos too and your’s looks so comfy. I wear them here in Dallas in the Fall / Winter because it’s like a blanket without being too hot.

    1. Ma’am would be hard to get used to for me too! That’s a great way to describe ponchos Dale. Cozy without being too hot!

  12. The red lipstick looks lovely on you and really pops with the more neutral color of your clothing!
I have a grey cashmere top that I just purchased it’s more of a kimono than poncho as the front is open and it has wide 3/4 sleeves. Nice to see how you have styled yours it gives me some ideas!
How do you store your cashmere? Fold it, hang it? Do you find it creases?

    1. Thanks Allison, I’m having fun experimenting with reds. I fold my cashmere. Yes it wrinkles but they quickly smooth out when it warms up on my body.

  13. Don’t have a poncho but a beautiful cape from Scotland. I purchased it years ago when we were in the highlands of that country. It was an expensive piece and I hummed and hawed about it but a lovely lady (Scottish) convinced me to buy it telling me i would have it forever. She was correct. Love bringing it out in the fall and I can wear it open or wrap it over one shoulder. Always, always, always get compliments when I wear it. It is true….buy quality and a classic piece and you will love it forever!

    1. That sounds like a treasure Wendy! I agree with you completely. Investing in quality things we love always pays off.

      1. She now just needs a “thingy”! What a hoot! Great story.

  14. Too bad the poncho is sold out!

    1. Oh no. They had some yesterday. Sorry. I’ve linked to some other pretty ones Gina.

  15. Your outfit is so perfect for fall. I love that poncho! You can definitely do red lipstick! You look wonderful. And isn’t it nice to get a compliment once in a while? – Amy

    1. It was such a nice surprise to get the compliment. Thanks Amy, this red is growing on me!

  16. Great outfit! You look happy, too. I think we’re all ready for cooler temps and layers!

    1. I am beyond ready. It’s been a brutally hot summer here šŸ™‚ It was a very fun time

  17. I love ponchos…huge fan of a poncho and a Kimono! And I love your blouse! The entire look is wonderful and something I would wear. How kind of that man to compliment your look! I love that…

    1. You have fabulous kimonos Pam! Yes it was nice of him and gave me a chuckle.

  18. You look younger with the red lipstick!
