What is Cuyana?
Cuyana is a San Francisco-based brand founded on the principle of creating “Fewer, Better Things.” Their focus is on crafting timeless, high-quality pieces that simplify and elevate your life. Cuyana’s commitment to craftsmanship and sustainability ensures that each piece is designed to last, both in terms of quality and style.
Quality and Craftsmanship
Cuyana’s leather totes are crafted from the finest full-grain leather sourced from Italy and Argentina. Full-grain leather is the highest-quality leather available, known for its durability and beautiful aging process. Over time, these totes develop a patina that adds character and uniqueness to each bag, making it feel even more personal as you use it.
The stitching, hardware, and lining are just as impressive. Every detail has been carefully considered, ensuring these bags are as practical as they are beautiful.

Why Cuyana Totes Are Worth the Investment
While these totes are an investment, I’ll tell you why they’re worth every penny:
- Cost Per Wear: Because they’re so durable and timeless, you’ll use your tote for years, driving the cost per wear way down.
- Timeless Appeal: Unlike trendy bags that come and go, Cuyana’s totes are designed to outlast fleeting fashion fads.
- Confidence Boost: There’s something about carrying a beautifully made bag that makes you feel put-together, no matter what the day throws at you.
One of my readers has also had a great experience with the brand: “I own 6 Cuyana handbags, and they cannot be beat for functionality and quality with their price point. I own many more super expensive designer bags, and I come back to Cuyana, day in and day out.”
What I’ve Bought from Cuyana

Classic Easy Zipper Tote
I find tote bags incredibly useful because they can hold a portable grocery bag, sunscreen, a small knitting project, a scarf…all the things I can’t or don’t want to cram into my purse. I went with Classic Easy Zipper Tote because I prefer my bags to close for security, and also, if they go flying off the front seat…everything stays inside.

Small Zipper Pouch
I like to keep my wallet, makeup bag, sunscreen, and hand sanitizer in this Cuyana small zippered pouch that I just transfer from tote to tote. I’ve also carried this as an evening bag…the leather is that beautiful.

Mini Leather Backpack
I gave this backpack to my daughter for Christmas a few years ago, and she absolutely loves it! The quality of their leather is so outstanding.
Other Popular Styles from Cuyana

Travel Case Set
I adore how versatile all of Cuyana’s pouches are. I’ve had my eye on this travel set for several years. They can be used as toiletry bags for your skincare or makeup while traveling, as extra organizers in your tote for tech cords, lip gloss, etc., and even be carried as clutches for a night out.

Classic Easy Tote Insert
If you find yourself switching between totes often, this tote insert is the simplest solution. It allows you to transfer everything from one bag to another in one quick move.

System Zipper Tote
This is their signature System Zipper toe silhouette. It’s great to carry a laptop with, and it comes in two different sizes (13 or 16 inches). It’s fully customizable with extra organizational add-ons that can be snapped on and off to fit your needs.
Styling Your Cuyana Tote
One of my favorite things about Cuyana totes is how effortlessly stylish they are. They pair beautifully with everything from casual outfits to more polished looks. Here are a few of the ways I’ve styled my tote:

Nice bags, and I totally agree about a top zipper. I forgot to zip my bag the other day, and it took forever to notice that my glasses case (with glasses inside) had come out on the car floor. It blended right in. BTW, when there were rules about these things, initials were done with first name initial to the left, middle initial to the right, and surname initial in larger font in the center.
These are beautiful bags and I would love to save up for one. They do seem to need the extra expense of the inserts and small pocket bags to control items inside. I’m very short and would be afraid even the small zippered bag would overwhelm me. You appear petite in photos but are 3” taller. It doesn’t seem to overwhelm you. Not sure. It is definitely an investment piece.
You must have been so frustrated by the time you got into your apartment. It’s ok if one things goes wrong but compound that and nerves are frayed. I hope today is more relaxing.
I never carry a tote, preferring a top handle with a crossbody strap. There are times I don’t want my top to wrinkle and having the handle allows you to carry it. Plus, I don’t want a heavy bag as my shoulders sometimes hurt. I think I must have the beginning of arthritis in them. I’m on the lookout for the perfect navy bag that hits all my criteria. I had a navy one but it didn’t fit my more casual style at this point. Then, I bought a pair of navy booties and the hunt is on.
Lovely tote. I don’t own this particular brand,it is beautiful and timeless, but I do agree tote inserts are essential. They make great gifts….
Hi, Jennifer. Thanks for another great post. In recognition of your many Canadian followers, I’m wondering if you could begin to incorporate into your posts some clothing lines and products that are made in Canada?
Most Canadian brands do not work with my affilate company, but I do try to link to the ones that do.
This does look like a really good bag and line. I would be interested in the Indigo color but it appears to be yet to stock. Can you alert us when that color is in stock. Does this stuff ever go on sale? I agree it does look worth the price point. Thank you.
That indigo looks so great! I can try but your best bet is to leave your email on the waitlist at the website, and they will alert you to it being available.
Hi, Jennifer. I am short (5’1″). Do you think the tall, slimmer version of this bag would look better on me? I was thinking that the tall one might not break up my silhouette as much as a wider tote.
Yes, at 5’1″, the smaller version would be a much better proportion.
I want to get one of these totes. Yours seems to fit so nicely against your body, not bulky at all.
Wow, yesterday was quite a day! I’m hoping you have an extra nice day today—and that you’re able to tip that nice uber driver. He sounds like a very kind and understanding person.
He was the nicest. Thanks Cindy, it was a werid day.
I visited the Cuyana shop in NoLita and everything was exquisite. I’ve wondered how it would break in, especially the corners. I’ve spied this tote in your photos and it looks like it breaks in beautifully while keeping its structure. It also doesn’t look too big for daily use. I’m more of a north /south tote person, but I may need to give this a try!
It’s “breaking in” beautifully and I love that it doesn’t overpower my height.
Love my Cuyana items. I’ve owned several bags (double loop and also bow bag) for multiple years, and they look as terrific as when I first got them or better. I only wish they were slightly less pricey!
They are pricey but the quality is so great.
I have two of these totes (one just like yours, one in the large size in a burgundy color) and I just love them! I use them for work and they are perfect. The inserts are great too. Love that they are not heavily branded either. I am considering the small pouch that you recommend.
Their colors are so nice
I bought the Cuyana zippered tote (after seeing it on your blog), along with the strap that converts the inner pouch into its own crossbody bag. It really is a beautiful bag, but have yet to use it, probably because even the small size is rather big on me. However, after reading this today, I am now determined to use it. It would be perfect for a European holiday I have planned, but, these days feel a bit more secure with a Pacsafe bag, despite its unchicness.
Have a fabulous trip!
I own a Cuyana Paloma shoulder bag in a stunning teal blue. I’ve never received more compliments on a bag than this one.
How wownderful! That teal is so pretty
