Dressing Room Diairy Spring Try-on at J. Jill

I visited my store twice for this spring try-on at J. Jill, hence the different earrings, eyeglasses, and level of hair dishevelment. The second time, they were just putting out their newest collection, which launches today. A dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to see what’s new and show you how it looks on a woman over 25.

For reference, I’m 5’4″ and weigh around 145 lbs. I have broad shoulders with straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often wear one size larger on top. I tell you what sizes I’m wearing to help you understand how things run. J. Jill has streamlined its sizing so that every style is available as regular in sizes XS-4X. Petite and tall are still available in popular styles, and all sizes are priced similarly.

WEAREVER CROSS-BACK DRESS size S / DENIM PEPLUM JACKET size S / TWO-TONE HOOP EARRINGS

This denim peplum jacket is fabulous. I love classics with a twist, and this jean jacket delivers. Because I have a long torso, the regular length was best for me because the shaping hit right at my waist. I found the fit a bit large, so you might consider sizing down for a more fitted look. The fabric is a cotton blend with spandex, and it also comes in tall! This would be adorable over white jeans, chinos, or a maxi skirt. I would not wear it with crops because the peplum already shortens the look of your legs.

I’m styling it over this wearever dress in the most stunning teal color. I love the wearever fabrics, and this one did not disappoint. It’s a soft yet substantial rayon knit with 5% spandex, so it’s very stretchy. I prefer my maxis to go to my ankle, so I chose this reg over the petite. The length is reg 51½” center back, reg 2X 53½” center back, petite 48½” center back, tall 54½” center back. You could dress this up with a jacket or wear it with white tennies for running around. I’d also consider wearing this topped with a linen shirt, worn unbuttoned and tied at the waist.

TWEED JACKET size MP / HIGH-RISE STRAIGHT LEG CUFFED JEANS size 8P / WEAREVER SOFT V-NECK TEE size MP / CHUBBY SILVER HOOP EARRINGS / EYEGLASS FRAMES

This tweed jacket adds a great pop of fun for spring. The tweed is woven with threads of orange and pink so it’ll coordinate with warm and cool tones. Its Chanel vibe has a boxy fit that looks large on me so I would personally size down, but it appears to run true to size.

I styled it with this soft v-neck tee that came home with me. I like the drape of this rayon/lycra blend that skims the body and doesn’t cling. It also comes in black or a teal-ish dot print. These cuffed jeans also came home with me to replace a size I outgrew. I chose the regular over the petite because cropped pants aren’t flattering on my short legs. I love the high waist and straight-leg silhouette. They also come in beige or a sunflower color.

WEAREVER SWEATER JACKET size S / WHITE V-NECK TEE size MP / HIGH RISE FRINGE CROP JEANS size 6 REG

I tried these crop jeans on in the petite and regular length. This reg is my preferred length, plus they give me a slightly higher rise, which feels better on my long torso. They come in lilac, beige and white as well and do come in tall with an inseam of 27″. The fit is terrific, and the slight fray at the bottom is stitched, so it won’t increase when you launder them.

This pretty blue and white knit sweater jacket is great for spring and I’m thrilled to see it has silver-tone buttons! Gold has been trending for so long…it’s a delight to see an alternative. This is made from 100% cotton yarn, so it will work all through the summer over a tank top, lightweight dress, or buttoned closed on its own. The 3/4 length bracelet sleeve is another plus as the weather warms up. If they’d had a petite in store, this may have come home with me, too.

ORGANIC COTTON BUTTON-SEAMED STRIPED TUNIC size MP / HIGH RISE FRINGE CROP JEANS size 8P

Here are the same crop jeans as above, this time in a petite length. To be fair, they wouldn’t be quite so bad with a shorter top, but they do shorten the look of my legs.

Crops/capris are a personal preference for women, so you should wear what you love, no matter what is in style. BTW, I always go up one numerical size at J. Jill when I wear a petite vs the regular.

I love this striped tunic in navy and cream. It has buttons at the side hem and would be great over slim-leg pants or leggings. It also comes in a fresh green or rose color. It’s made from 100% organic cotton and has 3/4 length sleeves. The center back length is reg 29½”, 2X 31″, petite 28″, and tall 31″.

PLACED EYELET TOP size S / COTTON STRETCH SLIM LEG PANT size 6

This pretty little eyelet top on the left has a knit body and woven sleeves. I tried on the white and this blue but forgot to photograph the white, sorry. It skims the torso slightly but doesn’t cling anywhere. You could also wear it unbuttoned or partially buttoned over a tank in the summer.

I’m wearing them over these slim-leg cotton pants. They’re a cotton blend, pull-on style with 3% spandex. The fabric is substantial, so the white is nicely opaque. They also come in 4 other colors. These are intended to hit right at the ankle and are a smidge long on me in this regular. They would be too cropped on me in the petite. #petiteissues

FLOUNCED HEM MIDI DRESS size S / ELEVATED ESSENTIAL CARDIGAN size XS

This navy polka dot dress has a pretty flounced hemline. It’s a rayon/spandex blend that skims your body but doesn’t cling. It runs a bit large, so you could size down or add a belt as they show online. This would be very pretty dressed up for a bridal shower or wedding.

I’m pairing it with this navy cardigan in a lightweight linen/rayon blend that matches the dress perfectly. I love this kind of short cardigan in the spring and summer to top a tank top or tee. They offer coverage that’s not hot and so helpful when the air conditioning is blasting. The cardigan does not have buttons to close.

COURTYARD DRESS size S

This rayon/linen blend dress looks more orange in my photo, than IRL. It’s called guava, which is like a soft coral in person. It also comes in a pretty aqua, seaglass color. It’s meant to be an above-knee dress and probably would be in the petite option. The sleeves have elastic smocking at the bottom and are 3/4 length. The reviews are mixed on this dress, but I liked it, so it seems to depend on your body shape.

  1. Was there last week when i was able to purchase the selection as they were unpacking. Two henley’s, blouse and the fringe high rise jeans came home. Today, i needed to run by the area so popped in…dangit! Another pair of of the high rise in lilac, blue linen shirt, scarf, slim blue and white gingham slim pants and smocked print top are about to be hung in my overflowing closet!
Im out if control! But fun!

    1. Sometimes, we just want new things! I get it.

  2. I used to really like J. Jill for their reasonably priced, on-trend clothing, but then they seemed to go overboard on the vanity sizing and now it is impossible to find anything for a smaller frame that needs a true XS. However, I still enjoy your dressing room diary posts from there. It’s always fun to see what styles and colors will be popular for the coming season.

I actually had both the tweed jacket and the blue sweater jacket on order when I read this post. I had intended to pick one or the other to keep but now may have to rethink my plan. I love them both. I just wish JJill had more sales!

  4. I really think the peplum jean jacket is Soo cute! I can really see wearing it with white jeans.

  5. Elizabeth says:

How see thru is the white t-shirt? I am always on the hunt for opaque white t’s!

Thanks for the preview, I am headed to JJIll tomorrow, and know exactly what I will check out!

    1. It’s not see through at all! That’s why I bought it. I don’t like see through tees

  6. Hi Jennifer, that tweed jacket is an amazing color on you. Hope you bought it!

    1. I can’t buy everything! But it would be fun.

  7. I always add colour and pattern to my spring/summer wardrobe whereas in winter I wear mostly solids, except the occasional stripe, in darker colours.
I still wear capris even though they are considered out. I bought two pairs of cropped pants the other day. It’s a trend I like this time of year. They look cute with fashion sneakers and sandals.
It must be hard to resist buying all the cute pieces you try on for your blog. I’m afraid my closet would be overflowing.

    1. It’s really hard! Last year I had to do a massive wardrobe clean out so I’m being much more selective this year.

  8. Nice try on! I especially liked the blue sweater jacket with SILVER buttons. So many of these have gold buttons. My skin tone doesn’t do well with yellow gold but silver buttons seem to be hard to find.

    1. I agree. I prefer silver too

  9. The tweed jacket in Clementine and the denim peplum jacket are right up my alley. Clementine is my color.

    1. The colors in the weave make it really versatile.

  10. Wow, Jennifer. I’ve been disappointed with JJILL lately but love almost everything you tried on. And they all look fab on you, especially that tweed jacket. Great color for you. I think I’m going to have to make a trip to the store.
