Dresses for Hot Weather

Happy Thursday ladies. I’m sure many of you enjoy the beauty of a cool summer dress, but it’s a significant style switch for me. Whoever said you couldn’t teach an old dog new tricks hasn’t met me or my ever-evolving style recipe.

The one and done sensibility of a dress appeals to me for several reasons this summer. Our hot weather is at the top of the list, followed closely by my desire to simplify things. When temperatures are sweltering, I find nothing more cooling than linen, and if you put that in a loose-fitting dress, all the better.

I feel like I could hide a basketball under this dress, and I’m just fine with that. It has a slight trapeze shape that I could always add a belt to, but that would defeat the whole purpose of its shape! When it’s hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, I crave airflow, and belts don’t allow that.fashion blogger Jennifer Connolly wearing blue dress and Dean Davidson earrings

At 102 degrees, I want nothing more than an easy one and done dress with simple sandals. I like these espadrilles so much, I bought two pairs this summer. After five months of wearing flat shoes, I don’t know if I will ever go back to any form of heels.

It was 103 degrees the day we grabbed these pictures, so all I wanted to wear was a pair of pretty earrings and a big hat.fashion blogger jennifer connolly wearing Dean Davidson Mar collection earrings

I seldom wear patterns because they’re memorable, and my mix and match wardrobe mentality says I will get more use out of a solid. But the thing is, with a dress, you are not coordinating it so you can just have fun with it.over 50 fashion blogger jennifer connolly wearing santorini linen dress by chico's

Beautiful dress on you! I love Chicoā€™s! Iā€™ve always worn dresses, especially in summer. I love the ease of one and done!

You certainly look good in the dress. I am a fan of dresses for church and other “dressy” occasions and I wear them for these occasions. However, I grew up in the 1950s and early 1960s. My mother always wore what she called “house dresses.” This was before women wore pants around the house. The “house dresses” were cotton prints of flowers. usually, and bright colors. I always thought they were unattractive and therefore this dress, although pretty on you, reminds me of those old-timey “house dresses,” and I wouldn’t wear it. Lol!

    1. I remember house dresses. They werenā€™t too flattering.

  3. For years I only wore dresses in the summer. I prefer the longer versions now but I still think dresses are really pretty and practical. Throw it on and go. I can’t wear short because my legs have seen too many miles but you look absolutely wonderful in it.

Iā€™m in the same boat Eve!

  4. You look wonderful and comfortable. I would wear that dress and I am a bit larger than you. I think women of any size would like it. I don’t think my legs look that great anymore, so I usually wear slacks or long dresses. After dealing with plantar faciitis, I know that I can only wear a very small heel. There are so many beautiful flat/low heel shoes now, why would anyone suffer with high ones?

    1. I agree. I think we will see less and less heels as life gets back to our new normal.

You look so lovely & cool,,,,canā€™t be 102 degrees!!

    Love,love your outfit.

Wish we had Chicoā€™s in Canada

  6. Hi Jennifer,
Your blog is one of the first things I read in the mornings with my coffee.
I am on a limited budget so my spending on clothing is also quite limited. Would you please write a blog on the subject of “shopping your closet”?
    Thank you in advance.
    Sharon

    1. I shop my closet all the time so Iā€™ll put together a post on how I do it.

  7. I love it! I see lots of dresses in July and August in Vancouver (because most women wear pants in the cool/cold months). I love the print and the color.

  8. Here in the desert of California I have been loving my dresses! I have a natural color linen dress from Chicoā€™s that is at least 15 years old! I wore it the other day & received so many compliments. Love this on you!

  9. Great idea, wear a dress in this hot weather. I am looking for a couple of dresses for my summer wardrobe that are more carefree. So thanks for getting me back to looking for a dress.

  10. You look great – not at all like you are melting in that heat – for me , i would prefer it in a solid color and would get much more wear out of it

Gorgeous dress and outfit! Totally agree about wearing something loose in hot weather. This looks so cool!

  12. I was in three different Chicos last week and somehow missed that wonderful dress! Is it substantial enough that it doesn’t need a slip?

  13. Love the dress… Perfect colour for me. Floral design and style sure would hide all my defects. Wish it was available in Canada…….Love it, love it.

  14. Love love this dress on you. You look so fresh, who would know the temperature is so high. Also Judith, try washing the linen a couple times before you wear it to get the manufacturing chemicals out, it will make a difference.

  15. Who wants to be in that ā€œyou canā€™t teach an old dog new tricksā€ category!! Not me!!
At a sweltering 103 degrees, you still managed to maintain your personal style and also, look amazing! From head to toe, you look so cool and confident! Yes, to the flat sandals, linen dress and darling earrings. The blue print on a white background makes that linen even more attractive. I would love to try this look. Thankyou for offering us new ideas. ā€œChangeā€ is good!

  16. Judith Robb says:

I really like this dress on you. The pattern is so interesting and fun.
I find linen irritates my sensitive skin so I donā€™t wear it. Maybe I donā€™t persevere with it and /or possibly washing it before I wear it?

    1. I would definitely try washing and machine drying it to remove any possible chemicals used in manufacturing. Plus it softens the fabric dramatically.

  17. Love the print and color of the dress. Looks perfect for hot summer weather!

  18. Looks very nice on you I saw that at Chicos…yes, anything that makes you cooler during the heat of summer…I like the loose look.

  19. Adorable dress that looks terrific! I couldn’t agree more with you about wearing heels again. I love my flats!
