Fall 2025 Trends That Will Outlast the Season
Every fall, the fashion world trots out a shiny new list of “must-haves” that look fantastic on a 22-year-old runway model and slightly unhinged on the rest of us. They’re fun to check out online… less fun to wear when you’re over 50 and trying to get out the door without looking like a walking trend report.
These days, I’m more interested in trends that actually work in real life. The ones that feel current now and won’t leave me wondering “what was I thinking?” six months from now.
I thought it would be fun to look at the current fashion trends that are phasing out for Fall 2025 and the ones that are coming in. Keep in mind that the best wardrobes are built on reliable staples, with just enough seasonal trends sprinkled in to keep things interesting. If you want more of my thoughts on this topic, check out how to wear trends over 60.

Why You Should Care
The fashion industry moves quickly, but that doesn’t mean you have to overhaul your wardrobe every six months. In fact, I don’t believe you should! The best trends have staying power because they’re rooted in shapes, fabrics, or colors that never truly go out of style. They adapt with subtle tweaks year after year, so you get more wear for your money.
For women over 60, this is especially important. We know what feels comfortable, what flatters us, and what works for our lifestyles. Trends that outlast the season are the ones that offer versatility without sacrificing personal style.
Wearable Fall Trends for Women Over 60

Every season seems to push a new “it” color, but chocolate brown is one I can actually understand. It is softer on the complexion than black, mixes easily with camel or ivory, and it feels fresh without being flashy.
In case you’re wondering if chocolate will work for your coloring, find out in my recent post: How to Wear Fall 2025 Color Trends That Flatter Your Undertone.
Even knitwear is getting an update. A polo collar on a sweater may not sound revolutionary, but it does wonders. It gives just enough structure to keep a knit from looking sloppy.
As for coats, the difference this year is the emphasis on longer, tailored shapes with a few plaids and textured fabrics like boucle thrown in for variety.
Denim Trends for Fall 2025
I’ve lived through more denim trends than I care to count, and I can tell you this…the ones worth keeping don’t shout for attention. They’re clean, flattering, and work with half your closet. This fall, denim is leaning more polished, which is a very good thing.
Dark and Tailored Denim

This is the jeans equivalent of a well-cut blazer. A deep indigo or inky black pair instantly looks pulled together and has a knack for making everything else you’re wearing look more expensive. The fit is structured but not stiff, with clean lines and no extra “distressing” to suggest you’ve been wrestling with a barnyard fence.
Bootcut Jeans

The new bootcuts are higher in the rise, slimmer through the thigh, and flare just enough at the hem to skim over boots without swallowing your shoes. They create a long line and add balance to curves. If you want jeans that look modern now and won’t look dated in a year, this is the pair to try.
Straight Leg Jeans in Clean Finishes

The overly distressed, shredded look is officially resting. In its place? Straight-leg jeans that hit at the ankle or graze the top of your shoes, in dark indigo or a rich mid-wash. No holes, no fraying, no unnecessary “whiskering.” Just simple, flattering jeans that you can wear with loafers, boots, or even a pointed flat.
If you are looking for more of the best straight-leg jeans, I shared my favorites here: The Best Ladies Straight-Leg Jeans for Women Over 60.
Full Length Wide Leg

Wide-leg jeans aren’t new, but this season they’ve been refined. The fabric drapes rather than balloons, and the hems skim the shoe instead of pooling around it.
Shoe Trends for Fall 2025
When it comes to shoes, I don’t care how “on-trend” something is. If I can’t walk in it, it’s useless to me. Luckily, Fall 2025’s shoe trends strike the rare balance between style and sanity. These are the kinds of shoes that make outfits look current without becoming unwearable by next year.
I shared a few of the most comfortable fall shoes that still look modern in this post if you are curious to see what caught my eye.
Mary Jane Shoes

Mary Janes continue to have their moment, and I’m not complaining. This season’s versions have multiple straps, soft leather, and a comfortable sole you can actually walk in.
I have been loving my super comfy and beautiful Mary Jane flats from Margaux. As a reminder, they offer tons of sizing options, including narrow, which I know many of you ladies need. They were comfortable right out of the box, and I love the semi-square toe.
Sleek Loafers

Still holding strong after several seasons, loafers remain the ultimate “smart casual” shoe. They are comfortable, supportive, and they add just enough polish to make even basic jeans look intentional. At this stage in life, I’m far more interested in shoes I can wear all day without thinking about them, and loafers fit that bill.
Suede Boots in Rich Neutrals

DONNYBROOK DENIM SKIRT size 29 / SIMILAR SUEDE BOOTS
Shades of chocolate, camel, and deep taupe give boots a fresh update this fall, bringing depth to even the simplest outfits. Suede has a way of softening a look, and it works seamlessly with the textures we naturally reach for in fall, like wool, tweed, and cashmere.
Ankle Boots with Clean Lines

SIDNEY DRESS BOOTIES IN BLACK LEATHER
The heavy, clunky platforms are losing their appeal, which is probably just as well since they were never practical for everyday life. Sleek ankle boots are stepping forward instead, with low to mid heels and softly pointed or almond-shaped toes.
The shaft of this Easy Spirit Sidney bootie fits nicely under my small bootcut jeans. They would also look nice with black tights and a skirt or casual dress. They’re incredibly comfortable with a comfy, low block heel, plus they’re orthotic-friendly. Their arch support and cushioned insole make them wearable for long hours on your feet. They’re also available in brown.

Accessory Trends for Fall 2025
Suede Purses and Handbags

This fall, I keep finding myself drawn to suede. It is one of those materials that never really goes out of style, yet it takes the spotlight again every few years. Just like with shoes, there is something about it that feels more interesting, especially in the brown shades that are everywhere right now.
Silk Scarves

Silk scarves are having their moment again, tied at the neck, draped over the shoulders, or even looped onto the handle of a bag…and I couldn’t be happier. The colors and prints this year range from muted autumnal shades to brighter patterns for contrast. They’re an easy way to add personality to your look without committing to an entire print-heavy outfit.
Minimal Gold Jewelry

Oversized statement jewelry is taking a back seat. Instead, fall 2025 is all about layering fine gold chains, stacking slim rings, and wearing small but noticeable hoops. I’ll be leaning into silver-toned and two-tone options.
Belts

Belts have never really left, but this fall, they are stepping out of the background and becoming more of a statement. I’ve seen many retailers styling outfits and making sure the belt shows, especially when wearing jeans. It is a small detail that makes outfits feel intentional, and it’s a trend that has the legs to last well beyond this season.
Fall 2025 Trends I Won’t Be Wearing
- Western boots and fringe: Many women love this vibe, but I’ve never felt comfortable in it, so I’ll pass rather than feel like I’m dressing for a rodeo.
- Low-rise jeans: Dare I need to say why? One word…muffin top!
- Neon anything: I prefer not to glow in the dark, and it makes me look sickly.
How to Wear Trends So They Last
The secret to making trends work for more than one season is choosing the ones that blend seamlessly with your existing wardrobe. Instead of buying a head-to-toe outfit straight from the mannequin, invest in one or two trend pieces each season and mix them with your tried-and-true favorites.
Before adding something new, ask yourself:
- Does it feel like me, or does it feel like I’m trying to be someone else
- Can I wear it with at least three things I already own
- Will I still want to wear it next year
Style at any age should be about feeling like yourself in what you wear. This season, there’s no shortage of trends that make that possible. Pick the ones that speak to you and make them your own.
Which of these trends (if any) will you be adding to your wardrobe this fall?

Love love love the convenience of Warby Parker. I ordered 5 pairs so far over the last 4 years and they hold up wonderfully (just wish my prescription would)! I am liking your new thoughts on what’s coming for fall. I just did a deep purge of my closet and being very selective of what i add but you’ve got some solid ideas. Thanks!!!
Loved the “slightly unhinged” term. Had me laughing to start. I do agree with your position, especially as we get older-the classic styles will last and will accept an occasional “trend” without breaking the bank.
My major concern is that it is near impossible to find narrow width shoes. Even in the higher price brackets.
I know they’re a challenge. I’ll keep my eyes out for options for you.
Jennifer, You said you get frames from Warby Parker. I’ve never used them, but love their pricing. Do you have them put your prescription lens in, too? I’ve always been concerned that they might not be right when they arrive. Thank you for this wonderful post on fall trends. You help keep us grounded and looking our best!
Yes, they are all in my prescription. I was worried too but have never had a problem. If the frame is a bit tight when it arrives in the mail, I simply stop in the store for an adjustment.
Fall is my favorite time of year! Warm and cozy clothes, throws and comfort foods. The deep browns and rust colors go so well with denim. Being retired denim is my go to. I have several Quince items and have not been disappointed. Last year I purchased a duvet cover with shams for a queen size bed, but with my thick mattress I needed to purchase a king for better coverage, so keep that in mind. I should have ordered separately because the set came with king shams which are a tad large, but I kept them anyway. I just ordered Turkish towels today, hoping they are as plush as the reviews. 🍁
My friend has the towels and she loves them!
Love these trends! On my shopping list is a nice suede bag and a pair of suede shoes, preferably loafers. I never know whether to get these in a color like burgundy or navy, or to go with black or maybe a deep gray (if I can find it) so that they go with everything. I think I would really love a dark grey suede bag and burgundy shoes!
Suede is so yummy
Really enjoyed this blog. So glad dark wash jeans with no distressing are in!
Thanks for another great article!
Me too! I am over distressing this fall
Great post Jennifer! I haven’t worn a belt in years but am going to start. How about a post on belts; how to choose one for a particular outfit, skinny and wider ones, with recommendations. I went into my local boutique looking for one for jeans and they said they don’t carry them anymore! Because of my low vision, rarely am I able to get to a mall, so buying online is my preference. But there are so many to choose from, I don’t know where to start!
That’s a great idea for a post. I know Nordstrom always carries them at great prices
I do like the look of those trouser jeans. They are my style. I never liked the distressed jeans look or the low waisted, yes I hate my fluffy muffin but there it is and doesn’t allow me to tuck anything anymore. You look lovely in the chocolate brown silk. We have such similar complexion and hair color and even look to be similar in size but alas brown makes me look sick. You must be much thinner as you can wear smaller sizes. I have a couple of booties from Easy Spirit and one from Skechers which are all comfortable and still in style. Thank you for your honest evaluation of trends. I so agree with you. Sydney
Thanks Sydney
I bought the same quince coverlet as you, but in the “sunset” color. It looks fab in my guest room and is the perfect weight for our temperate climate. Until I started following you, I was hesitant to buy anything from Quince. Now it’s my go to before I look anywhere else. Great quality and reliable. Love hearing from you every morning with my cup of coffee!
I’m so glad you hear that!
Amazing post! This is one of the most informative and interesting articles I’ve read about fashion for those of us over 50 (and so much more). Thank you!
I love that dark wash jeans are in this year and I really l like suede on shoes and handbags. I’m going to have to get a nice belt and try not to be uncomfortable about tucking things in. Nice dark jeans with a striped shirt sounds really stylish.
Once you try it a few times it gets easier. Just pull the top out a bit and cover the belt a bit
Great post. Thanks!
Great post Jennifer. Like you, I like suede boots not sure what a suede handbag would look like after a few uses. I will stick with my good leather bags that I can wipe clean.
This was a great post. Thank you.
I’m glad you liked it. I love your name ♥️
Good morning, Jennifer. This is a timely post ! I just bought a suede purse in burgundy, and I love it. I also recently bought two pairs of dark wash, wide leg trouser jeans. Because of the dark wash and tailoring, they make me look taller and thinner. Hurrah! Finally, I own tons of silk scarves (from years of collecting them) – so glad I did not get rid of them! It seems I am ready for some of this year’s trends. Thank you!
Your bag sounds fabulous! Yes, you’re ready! I never regret keeping accessories year to year.
Great blog today, Jennifer! The chocolate brown and black blazer is gorgeous on you! I have seen so much beautiful brown this year but don’t think it would look good on me with my long silver hair. My best colors are red, navy, black, white — no pastels. I agree 100% with you about shoes and I love Margaux. I have Margaux ballet flats and block heels but I’m not sure about Mary Jane’s. Paul Green sneakers are worth the splurge! I enjoy reading your blog. I read through it and use what works for me. I live in southwest Florida so I wear few blazers, cardigans, boots but I enjoy seeing the styles you show.
You sound like you have striking colors! How fun.
Good Morning Jennifer: Great article and I love the three “ask yourself” tips before buying something new. And, I’m feeling the same about suede … with three new pairs of suede boots this season. I did order the Blue Suede boots you featured from Amazon. Looking forward to their arrival.
I love suede boots and shoes. They add such richness to a look.
Love this post and agree with your outlook. I have some dark wash trouser jeans on order from J Crew-the ones that look like trousers vs wide legs (also love)-with seams down the front and two buttons at the waist. I’m passing on the brown, and I don’t find suede to be durable. I’m circling back to my more preppy roots with polo collars, and classic cardigans. I’ve always been a loafers gal and now that my feet are more picky they are a great solution for me. (My years long search for cordovan penny loafers continues, can I just get mine back from high school?) Now that we can wear socks again especially! I’m embracing old money/NY style these days.
I love this Shari! I ran into some Cordovan penny loafers on Nordstrom last night, but they have very few sizes left. The JCrew jeans sound perfect!
This selection of fall clothing is spot on! I love black with chocolate brown- I def will be wearing this combo this fall.
