Gap Fall 2025 Try-On: Great Real-Life Basics For Women Over 50
I hadn’t thought about Gap in years—until I walked in on a whim and remembered why I used to love it. I used to shop at Gap as if it were my part-time job. Back when our kids were little, I loved buying their clothes at Gap Kids too. I could get matching shirts for my son and husband, which I’m pretty sure neither of them thought was as much fun as I did.
Over the years, I started shopping at other places and, honestly, forgot all about Gap. But my curiosity got the better of me, and I wandered into a local store recently… and was pleasantly surprised. The jeans were still solid, the prices still reasonable, and—shock of all shocks—I found real-life basics I’d actually wear now. So this Gap Fall 2025 try-on wasn’t planned, but it turned out to be worth sharing.
In this post, I’m trying on several new fall arrivals from Gap, including updated denim, easy knitwear, and timeless outerwear. I’ll share sizing tips, fabric details, and ideas for how to style these pieces if you’re over 50 and want clothes that work in real life.
Spoiler: they’ve stepped up their game without losing that classic, clean Gap feel.

If you’re new here, welcome. A try-on is when I pop into a store and style pieces from the latest collection so you can see how they look on a real woman over 50. I share sizing tips, fit impressions, and ideas for how to wear them. For reference, I’m 5’4″, on the cusp of petite, with broad shoulders and straight hips. You can find my other try-ons here.
Gap is a size-inclusive brand carrying regular, petite, and tall sizes in XS-XXL.
Cashsoft Cardigan and Tailored Knit Trousers

I loved this outfit and would wear it on repeat all fall. The Cashsoft name is slightly misleading because this cardigan doesn’t contain cashmere…which is a plus for those who are sensitive to wool and cashmere. I’m wearing the gorgeous Wind shade, and it’s also available in other colors. They also offer a coordinating tank here, so you can wear it as a twin set.
These tailored pants are a heavier knit than the sweater. They have a zip and button closure, a structured waistband, on-seam pockets, and are as comfortable as sweats! These have a straight leg and are fitted through the hip and thigh…but not tight. I’m wearing black, and they also come in brown. The website does not appear to specify the inseam, but I’m wearing a regular, which is a smidge too long for me. These pants would be perfect for work or dinner out, and would be just as fabulous for an afternoon of snuggling on the couch with tea and a great book.
Column of Black With Classic Denim Jacket

This is a flat-out classic denim jacket, labeled Icon for a reason. It’s a medium indigo wash, made from non-stretch denim, with a point collar, button-front closure, chest flap pockets, and long button-cuff sleeves. It’s a straight, easy fit that hits at your hip, depending on the length you choose. The buttons are silver-toned, which I love.
I’m styling it over this organic cotton tank top, which is a nice heavyweight in a cropped length. It’s called ultra cropped, but on me, it hits at my waist in the regular length. This comes in several colors for layering. These pants are a pull-on style in thick ponte knit, which, to be honest, rival some I’ve tried on at 3 times the price! I could only find the large, which is a bit loose but totally wearable, so I would say they run small. These come in 5 colors and have a slimming seam down the front of each leg. These flares work great with sandals now and loafers or booties later this fall.
Classic Trench with White Shirt and Straight-Leg Jeans

This Icon trench coat comes in tan or black in regular, petite, and tall. This is a regular which is too long for me, so the petite would be better. It’s water repellent and fully lined with all the traditional details of a classic trench coat. I’m wearing it over this organic Oxford shirt, which is miles too large for me…because it’s selling out fast. I tied it at the waist to control some of the fabric, but this would be better worn untucked over narrow pants. It comes in 11 other colors and lots of stripes.
I’m wearing it over these straight-leg jeans in the medium wash. I clearly needed the petite in these because they’re several inches too long for a straight. This style comes in 34 washes, so it must be a customer favorite. It’s slim through the hip and thigh, but not skinny.
Chunky Cotton Sweater and ’70s Flare Jeans

I love a great flare jean, and this pair fits the bill. These high-rise ’70s flares have a very flattering fit with a nice amount of stretch. I could only find the regular length in the store so I am standing on my tippy toes because the inseam is 32″. The petite has a 30″ inseam, and talls have a 34.5″ inseam so they are intended to be worn with a bit of a heel. They’re slim through the hip and thighs then flare to a 21.5″ leg opening.
My color seems to be sold out in the oversized cotton sweater, but it comes in 5 other options. It’s a great cozy sweater for milder weather and/or those who dislike wool.
Cynched Denim Jacket and Dark Wash Jeans

This Cynched denim jacket was a delightful find! It has a flattering, feminine shape that elevates the look from the boxy ones. This is a low-stretch denim that curves in all the right places. I’m wearing the medium indigo, and it also comes in black or white denim. I wish I’d buttoned it to show you the full effect (my bad), but I seldom close my denim jackets, so I forgot.
These are the same ’90s straight jeans I showed above, this time in the dark rinsed wash. I paired it with this organic cotton tee in pretty pink. It also comes in 13 other colors, including a stripe. These tees are a great quality and you can’t beat the price!
This little trip down memory lane reminded me that some brands really can grow up with us. Gap may not be on every fashion insider’s radar, but if you’re after real-life basics that look pulled together without trying too hard, it’s worth a second look.
I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on their fall lineup. And if you’ve wandered into a Gap lately, I’d love to hear…were you surprised too?

I haven’t been in a Gap store in years, but you look great in all the items you tried on. In fact, I was so impressed I invented a new theme for you- ‘Mystery Dressing Room’ LOL. If I had just looked at the clothes I would have guessed you were in Nordstrom. I usually wear petite but I’m going to check out the store when I’m next in the mall.
I’m another Old Navy fan, my grandboy has grown up in it, and their basics, layer tanks, tees, jeans and work out clothes have always been a great update for me. I love that a lot of their items are cotton, even for the little ones with itchy skin, and their PJ’s are our family go to. So Gap n Banana Republic and the factories have always been on my radar, they are all affiliated, but my absolute best ever sweats are Gap. I have a matching floral set & multiple hoodies (my fav is a cream leopard), they wear for years! Great for playing with grandkids, dogs and in the garden, they wash perfectly. And admittedly, some of my more fashion forward clothes come from Banana Republic, so I do keep an eye on them, and if you are patient, most things can be bought on sale or at a special discount. For me I have found these to be some of the best updated classic items for my wardrobe at an affordable price!
I need to get back into Banana Republic too! Thanks for the reminder.
Oh gosh! I haven’t been to a Gap in years! The closest is 2 hours away or I’d dash right out to try on the Cashsoft and ponte pants. They both look so polished and comfortable!
Huge Gap jean fan here. Over the past three years their style, quality and pricing for jeans has been the best. So happy you wandered in; I think those pointe pants might need a closer look.
Hi Jennifer, I don’t comment very often but I always read and enjoy your posts. My husband and I also travel between two places. For us it’s Wisconsin and Sonoma, CA. Two very different climates.
I struggle to determine my jean size online when they are listed by waist measurement. But I am very interested in the Gap high waisted straight leg jeans so I’ll have to do some investigating and find a store.
I’ve never been to Wisconsin but I sure love Sonoma!
Gap, banana republic and old navy come in and out of my shopping radar. But on a whim and a great sale, I got the 90’s loose mid rise and love them! I’m not sure why it’s mid rise. They hit me right at my waist (or where my waist used to be 😁), dark wash, no whiskering, etc. I think they’re a hybrid…maybe fuller than straight leg but not truly wide leg. And soft. I liked them so much I got them in white…yay! Not see through. Got my regular size in both.
You look great in the cardi and black pant! Had my eye on the cardi but held off since some reviews said it ran small. Will have to take another look.
Btw…I enjoy your writing, your turn of phrase, great sense of humor. There’s always something to make me smile, laugh or occasionally snort! Thx!
Happy Friday, Linda. They sound great!
These are the styles that I wear every day in cooler weather. It is 55 degrees and spitting rain. So it has arrived today. I will get out my jeans, tee and long sleeve shirt, warmer socks and sneakers. Ready for my day. You are right, Gap prices are affordable too. I love the wind blue cardigan on you and for me!
Fall has arrived for you! Wow
Just ordered your probiotic fingers crossed they are really better than what I get at the pharmacy. 🙂 You have inspired me to take a drive to visit The Gap again. Thank you
Jennifer, love your blog! I’m so jealous that you’re headed back to Vancouver. My husband I visited for the first time in July and absolutely loved it. I do hope to go back. The music some stores (and restaurants) play is SO loud these days, a sure sign of my age, no doubt, ha ha. Regarding Gap, I recently went in on while visiting in Los Angeles and did not have much luck. Maybe online is better for me! I am another fan of Old Navy though. They have really upped their game in the last few years and there are some good pieces (and I have better luck online there as well but do shop in-store some). I hope this comment makes it through–I’ve tried to comment before and it never seems to work; not sure if that might be b/c of using an iPad rather than a laptop?? Have a great day!
I almost always have better luck online. Yes, we adore Vancouver. I’ll need to check out Old Navy again!
Lot’s to see at the Gap! You always nail it when you do a try on.
Forgot about the GAP! Plan to make. A trip to the mall and try on jeans. You looked great in the jeans.
Thanks for the reminder. I also had not been in a Gap for a long while (the one near me closed) but I was so taken with the cinched jean jacket that I ordered two, in denim and white (which was half price). Your Aritzia comment brought back a memory. Christmas shopping for kids/grandkids with hubby about 10+ years ago, at our local mall. When we passed Abercrombie & Fitch with their darkened windows and loud music you could hear in front of stores across the walkway, he said “what’s wrong with them? I would never shop there!”. I burst out laughing and said “they don’t WANT anyone to catch someone like us walking in, and think it’s a geezer store”.
LOL, that is hilarious and I believe to be true! Sadly, ageism is rampant everywhere, especially in retail.
Hi, thank you for the gap try on. Is the cinched jacket true to size?
It seems to fun true to size but is more fitted in the tummy than boxy denim jackets
I was just thinking about the Gap and wondering if it had completely changed but your post was great. It still looks like the old Gap I always shopped at. I always liked that they had petite jeans. The only problem here is it’s Downtown. Paying for parking annoys me! Love all that you tried on.
I really like Gap jeans/denim, it fits great. Thanks for the reminder to shop there. I also will leave a store if the music is too loud and aggressive. Have a blessed weekend!
Hi Jennifer. What a fun post – I, too, just rediscovered Gap this week and came away with the exact same feelings that you write about (along with several items I had no idea that I needed before I went into the store – LOL). Thanks for the trip down memory lane, as well as a new old store to add to my list of favorite places to shop.
Isn’t that funny! After a blip of 30 years, I rediscover an old gem.
I bought the ponte knit crop flare pants in tall so they’re a full length flare pant on me. Perfect for fall/winter in Vancouver and for travel. They’re so comfy and hold their shape (no baggy knees) through multiple wears.
So smart of you!
Just ordered the same trench. It does run big but I was so happy to find a petite sized trench that did not break the budget. I will need some modest alterations in sleeve length but not unusual for my body shape to require upper body alterations to fit my pear shape. And I am with you on keeping all my favorite stores from years past on my radar. They almost always come through don’t they!
They do! I wonder what other stores I have forgotten about.
I shop at all of the Gap brands and often prefer Old Navy, but Gap has done a good job the past few seasons albeit not in my colors. As for Aritiza, when I get to shop in a store, I get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of items that look like they are the same color. I can never find anything I saw online and it’s so busy that trying on seems to be a battle! (Talking Michigan Ave. and Soho/5th Ave.) I do love the music though! (I’m an older mom and my child has educated me!). Please try on the Effortless and Limitless pants in the name of research! I will say that the Quince “superpuff” coats are very similar to Aritzia’s!
You are always full of great suggestions Shari! Thanks for being so willing to share. I’ll check them out. I haven’t been in an Old Navy for years.
Thanks for your post today. I will check out the Gap store as I am looking for stores that carry petite and pricing is reasonable.
Most of their petite seems to be online but I’m so happy to find it!
J those black flare jeans look SO great on you. More flattering than many of the looser/straight styles. Look forward to you evert day❤️
Thanks Peggy. Flares are my new favorites! Have you tried some on? They’re flattering on all shapes.
