Festive Decor Ideas for Memorial Day and Beyond

Memorial Day is quickly approaching. To me (and my US AWSL readers), it marks the official start of summer. More than that, itā€™s the day we celebrate those brave military men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice and died in service to our country. They and their families are in my thoughts and prayers.

Memorial Day also seems to be the unofficial start to summer and when everyone tries to get their outdoor space ready for a season of entertaining and spending extra time with friends and family. Today, I’m sharing some festive decor ideas to help you get ready for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and beyond. Whether it’s updating your outdoor lighting, grabbing a throw pillow, or adding a fun touch with some patriotic plates and bowls, this is a great time of year to invest in a few new outdoor and entertaining pieces that you’ll use all season-long.

Solar Lanterns

Keeping candles or lanterns lit and having to replace the votives can be a headache. These solar-powered lanterns are the perfect solution and will add just the right amount of light to your table or patio.

String Lights

Adding string lights to any space can really change the ambiance from mediocre to magical, especially if you host friends and family in the evening.

Flag Pillow

While I’m not someone who goes all out decorating for different holidays, this would be something easy I could add and keep in a closet when I’m not using it. Pillows are an easy way to decorate without overdoing it. You could put this on your outdoor couch or even in an indoor chair.

BBQ Grill Tool Set

For many people, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of grilling season. But when was the last time you replaced your grilling tools? Ours get pretty heavily used, so I like to update ours at the start of the season.

Beverage Tub

If you are entertaining a large crowd, a beverage tub like this can be a wonderful option to allow your guests to serve themselves. Simply fill with ice and your choice of beverages for an easy and clean-looking presentation.

Star Serving Dishes

While we’re on the topic of serving food and beverages, how fun are these star-shaped serving dishes? Fill them with nuts, chips, or even a dip and put them out. Even if you aren’t having guests, these are a fun, festive way to serve small bites before dinner or with drinks.

Blue Goblets

These vintage-inspired blue goblets are just so pretty! They’ll elevate the look of your summer tablescape in your dining room, add charm to a china cabinet, and look pretty filled with iced tea on the patio. They’re also available in highball and old-fashioned versions as well!

Round Blue Placemats

I like to find decor that can be used outside of the holidaysā€“these blue placemats do just that! They are neutral enough to be used all year round but also still feel festive when you want.

Reusable Red and White Gingham Plates

When hosting a backyard barbecue or even having grandkids over, it can be risky to bring out your glass plates. Since I don’t love the wastefulness of paper plates, I wanted to find a better option. These reusable gingham ones are very cute and dishwasher-safe.

Blue Gingham Napkins

I love using cloth napkins as a way to be more sustainable than paper napkins. These nostalgic blue and white checked napkins are actually trending right now but never go out of style.

Star Doormat

The simplest way to add a little festive decor is with a new doormat. This star-studded doormat is pretty enough to leave out all summer or year-round for the patriotic at heart.

The checked cloth napkins are so cute, how are they holding up after repeated washings?

I am due for an uplifting change and bought the check napkins and matching placemats. It is still up and down here on temperatures but by Memorial Day it should feel like summer. I had two red butterfly bushes planted in my back yard and all of my neighbors have put out potted plants in front, mostly geraniums in red. It all looks so bright and so summer.

  3. I’ve always admired how patriotic Americans are. Here in Canada, we celebrate the Victoria day long weekend and it’s also our unofficial start to summer. And where I live, it’s usually when we can start planting annuals as it’s usually frost-free by now, although we have had frost the last 2 nights! I’ll be doing my planters over the weekend and watching the fireworks on Monday.
    Enjoy the long weekend ladies.

Love the coming holidays and the summer, even if the heat and humidity can be trying down here in southeast Texas. Love all the red, white and blue ideas. I have a red and a blue table lantern, red, white and blue table ware. Everything from stove top pots to sandwich plates and matching mugs! I am crazy for decorating our wonderful Holidays that really are the foundation of this Country of ours. God Bless America!

  5. Melamine dishes, cloth napkins, solar lanterns — well done, Jennifer, thank you. And thank you for reminding us to take a moment to reflect. We actually have to buy a new flag this year. Like Lin, I find Memorial Day the start of summer, but as it is still cool here, I’m going to stick with some potted plants for the moment.

  6. Love all the patriotic ideas. I decorate for Memorial day and leave all the red, white and blue out for the summer. I’ve toned down my decorating for holidays but this I go all out for.

  7. Memorial Day marks the start of Summer for me. I plant my flowers and decorate the outside and doors with red, white and blue.
It makes everything sparkle and a great entrance to a new season.

    1. Theyā€™re such upbeat happy colors!
