How To Get Great Budget Friendly Style Over 50

Having great style has nothing to do with price and everything to do with knowing who you are, how you want to look, and buying garments that reflect that. Spending a lot of money on your clothes is no guarantee of great style because designer everything tends to look tragic. Today I’m sharing 4 looks showing how to get budget-friendly great style over 50.

This post is sponsored by Target, all styling and opinions are my own.

I’ve been a fan of Target basics for as long as I can remember. Their tagline says it all, ‘Expect More, Pay Less” and you can count on that to be true.Ā If you’re interested in adding a touch of trend to your wardrobe that won’t break the bank, Target is your place. They offer classic pieces and on-trend items in coordinated color stories so you can create a head-to-toe look with ease.

This fall I’m loving layering with their elevated knits, sweaters, modern jeans, and luscious colors.Ā  Their accessories are color coordinated so you can effortlessly create a look

Here are a few new fall looks I’ve put together.

OUTFIT #1

blonde woman walking wearing budget friendly long blue cardigan over blue sweater and gray jeans

I started with a pair of soft gray, high-rise skinny jeans that have tons of stretch in a smooth fabric that sculpts and slims. It’s a classic 5 pocket styling so you could tuck things in if you felt so inclined. They’re a little long on me so I folded the cuff for a casual look.

I’m wearing it with this soft blue crewneck pullover. This is available in 8 colors in women’s and women’s plus. I am wearing a small. To elongate my look I topped this all with this navy duster cardigan. It comes in 8 colors, women’s and women’s plus, XS-XXL. I am wearing a small so it runs generously.

To keep the whole look casual, I wore these memory foam insole, quilted slip-on sneakers.Ā These are sized 5-12 and run nice and wide so you could wear socks in them if it got cold.

OUTFIT #2

woman wearing white tunic shirt, plaid pants and camel colored slides

This outfit started with these adorable mules that have a memory foam insole and are super comfy. I’m wearing the tan, they also come in black and I’ve ordered them in rust. because they’re that cute. The ruffle is just the right amount of sweet for my style. They have a tiny 1″ wedge and fit high on your foot which helps keep your foot securely seated in the mule.

This classic white button-down shirt is a nice medium-weight cotton/lyocell twill with raglan sleeves. It’s available in 5 colors, sizes womens and women plus, XS-XXL. The sweater around my shoulders is the same crew neck as above, this time in soft yellow.

These high-rise skinny ankle pants are as comfy as could be. I love their sleek silhouette you could dress up or down. They have a side zipper so nothing to add bulk upfront. They are available in multiple colors and patterns, these are called tan, and are a check. They come in women and womens plus sizes 0-24W. I am wearing a 6.

OUTFIT #3

woman walking in plaid ruana and beige sweater

This outfit starts with a super soft, plaid wrap jacket, that I think of as a ruana. I love these soft colors in all the shades of fall. It’s stitched under the arms to create a sleeve so it stays put and doesn’t slip backward off your shoulders. It also comes in black plaid and runs generously.

I picked up one of the colors of the wrap with the same crew neck, as above in soft yellow. Are you seeing a theme here? I love these soft cozy crew necks:) I’m wearing it over the same twill white shirt as above, this time tucked into a high-rise, slim, straight-leg black jeans.

The jeans come in 5 colors, in womens and womens plus sizes 0-26W. You know what a fan I am of straight jeans this fall, and these fit beautifully with 2% elastane so they’re very stretchy. The leg is not too full yet slips nicely over the top of these black Chelsea boots. The boots have a very comfy cushioned insole and a low stable 2″ heel so they’re very easy to walk in. They’re sized from 5-12 in medium and wide widths.

OUTFIT 4

It also comes in a few stripes and 9 other colors, in womens and womens plus sizes XS-4X. I’m wearing a small. I added a chic color-coordinated crossbody bag that’ll hold everything I need for a day of running errands.

    1. They come in lots of solid colors too. My store was a bit cleaned out so I ordered online:)

  4. Glad to hear Target has up-ed its quality game! Beautiful fall colors. Not so sure about the lower priced footwear. My seasoned feet ache just thinking about them. Iā€™ll be sticking to my Allbirds.

    1. I just got my first pair of Allbirds…so comfy

  5. Barbara Daley says:

    I love these outfits!

  6. Francesca B. says:

So love Target! Love the prices. I really like their sleeveless rib tanks, beautiful colors for the season, gorgeous browns and turquoise greens. I recently went to another store and bought an army green tank by a well known name and it was $58 and then went to Target and got a wonderful rusty brown for $8.00 to wear under a cardigan or a blouse. The lady working in the clothes section said they could not keep them in stock, they were flying out of the door. Love those plaid plants Jennifer! Have to go back !!Happy week šŸ™‚

    1. Have a great week, Francesca

  7. Paulette Levy says:

You look really terrific in all of the outfits youā€™ve put together ! Must shop looking for camel and tan shades in sweaters and slacks! Love the look on you!

  8. A growing trend is gently used clothing – a concept which is environmentally friendly. There is a great consignment store near me and I check it out at least once a season.

    1. Totally agree! We have a consighment store in our little town. Open 2 days a week, it carries high-quality items for less.

    2. I haven’t had great luck in consignment stores but I keep my eye out for good ones. It’s a great idea!

  9. beth byrd says:

Target’s quality has certainly improved over the past couple of years. I’m especially fond of their Knox Rose and A New Day lines and have several pieces. Their Denizen jeans are also my favorite pair right now.

I’ve had my eye on those plaid pants — they look great on you.

    Thanks for this post today!

    1. You will love those pants! I do, I also bought them in taupe

  10. Carole McCullough says:

I live in Roseville, you must of been sweating during this shoot! Target has really stepped up their fashion game, don’t mind spending trends at a reasonable price.

    1. It was warm but we did it in the coolest part of the day

  11. Creams/ camels look good on youšŸ‘šŸ»šŸ˜Š

    1. I do love them this year:)

  12. Thanks for this! While some tout “must-have” $350 sneakers that are just not a possibility for many, style can (and should) be available at any income bracket. I love Target for basics.

    1. We all need to shop within our budget, so I’m thrilled to source great style at all price points for everyone.

  13. Tragic designer everything was best exemplified by Edina in the British TV series “Absolutely Fabulous”. Too much can be too much. Fashion Victim vs. Fashion Victor is a case of knowing when to stop.

  14. Loved this post, budget style. Could Canadian Walmart be this great?

    1. You will find that Canadian Walmart does not carry the same labels as American Walmart. Sometimes they do carry certain brands, like Eloquii, but only in certain stores, or a limited selection online, not nationwide.

  15. Love all the looks. Partial to the yellow sweater with the tan pants and the white blouse. Reminds me of my ā€œpreppyā€ dressing days in New England, crisp white shirt, crew neck sweater slung over your shoulder and nice slacks with penny loafersā€¦.LOL we have a local Target here and I hope to make a visit there soon. Everything looks so wonderful, waiting for it to cool down here in Florida šŸŒžšŸŒžšŸŒž

    1. It’s finally cooled down a bit here, and I am thrilled:)

  16. All great fall looks! Target has a great selection!

  17. You look very cute wearing outfit #1. I love the checkered pants with the soft yellow sweater. Iā€™d certainly buy the grey crossover purse but we donā€™t have a Target in Canada. šŸ˜¢

  18. You look as stylish in the target pieces as you do in the higher cost items. The light yellow is lovely and the teal is great too. Thank you for this post. Sometimes I forget about how reasonable and handy Target is! You knocked it out of the park!

  19. Leslie Greaves Radloff says:

Nice ideas, but the sweaters, unless wool, really aren’t warm enough for me in winter. The color of the V necked is great but again, those sleeves have just too much fabric where I need it least. Target, MN’s hometown team, has ramped up it’s act and marketing. Where are the clothes made?

    1. They’re doing an amazing job. The clothes are made in a variety of places overseas.

  20. Love the outfits, I have a special affinity for the plaid pants. Your styling is right on, you really showed its about choice and styling, not price point. As we head closer to retirement, watching the clothing budget is always a good thing.

    1. I love those too. very slimming and comfy.

  21. I think #4 is my fav. That sweater is gorgeous, and the sleeves with the tighter cuffs are perfect. The V neck is much better for me as I just don’t feel comfortable in a crew neck. Target in the US is so much different than when it was in Canada, and will be checking it out when the borders open back up.

    1. I remember the Canadian trial and it was nowhere near as good as the ones here. I’m not sure why, but I’m sorry they couldn’t duplicate what we have here.

  22. Love all these outfits! I’m heading to Target!

  23. This was a great post. I love all the outfits. Stylish and expensive looking!

  24. Target is fine for basics. I like the look of the black quiled slip on shoes. Are they comfortable?

    1. They are quite comfortable. The memory foam is great!
