How to Get the Eileen Fisher Look for Less
I get many requests for ways to achieve a chic, effortless look without breaking the bank. One of my go-to brands for this timeless signature style is Eileen Fisher. Her pieces are pricey, which can be a challenge for those who may have a small wardrobe budget. Today, I’m sharing some of my tips and tricks for getting that same relaxed but luxurious “Eileen Fisher” look for less.

Understanding the Concept of “Look for Less”
The look for less concept is not about finding cheap knock-offs or compromising on quality. It’s about capturing the essence and aesthetic of a high-end fashion brand like Eileen Fisher without the high price tag. This allows you to dress in a way that aligns with your personal style while also being mindful of your budget. The key is to focus on the characteristics that define Eileen Fisher’s designs and find other brands that embody these same elements but at a lower price point.
What Defines the Eileen Fisher Look?
- Simplicity: Eileen Fisher is known for her fuss-free designs with clean lines, simple cuts, and unstructured silhouettes.
- Neutral Palette: People typically think of the Eileen Fisher aesthetic as predominantly black. When I began wearing the brand over 30 years ago, that was true. But in recent years, she has expanded her neutral palette and introduces a few brighter colors with each collection.
- Quality Fabrics: The use of high-quality, sustainable materials such as organic cotton, linen, silk, and wool is a hallmark of the brand. These fabrics drape beautifully and last for years.
- Versatility: Eileen Fisher’s designs are incredibly versatile, and her pieces are designed to mix and match easily. This makes them a great addition to smaller, capsule wardrobes like my own.
- Comfort: With relaxed pieces like loose-fitting tunics, wide-leg pants, and soft cardigans, her clothing is perfect for women who want to look stylish while feeling comfortable.
Tips for Finding Eileen Fisher-Inspired Looks at a Lower Price
Achieving the Eileen Fisher look for less requires a bit of strategy and know-how. Here are some tips to help you find inspired looks without overspending:
Identify Key Pieces
Start by identifying the key pieces that define Eileen Fisher’s aesthetic for you. It could be a perfectly draped tunic, a pair of wide-leg pants, or a softly structured linen blazer. Having a clear idea of what you’re looking for will help streamline your search. For me, it’s the minimalistic lines and quality fabrics.
Embracing Minimalist Silhouettes
The heart of Eileen Fisher’s aesthetic lies in its clean, unfussy lines. To capture this essence, focus on simple, well-cut basics that drape beautifully. Hunt for flowy tunics, boxy tops, and wide-leg pants in neutral tones at budget-friendly retailers like Uniqlo or COS.

Pro tip: Keep an eye out for end-of-season sales to snag those perfect pieces at a fraction of the cost. Remember, the key is quality over quantity – a few versatile items can form the foundation of your Eileen Fisher-inspired wardrobe.
Mastering the Art of Layering
Eileen Fisher’s signature layered looks are all about effortless sophistication. You can achieve this by mixing textures and lengths in your outfits. Start with a base layer like a fitted tank or turtleneck, then add a flowing cardigan or an oversized shirt jacket. Don’t be afraid to experiment with proportions – pair a long, flowy top with slim-fit pants or vice versa. The beauty of layering is that it allows you to create multiple looks from a limited number of pieces, stretching your budget further.

Seek Out Natural Fabrics
Look for natural fibers like organic cotton, linen, and Tencel at affordable retailers such as H&M Conscious or Everlane. Thrift stores and consignment shops can be goldmines for unique, high-quality pieces at bargain prices. You can also check online platforms like ThredUp, where you might score an authentic Eileen Fisher piece at a steal! For the crafty among us, consider upcycling old garments or dyeing existing clothes in Eileen Fisher-inspired earthy tones. Not only will you save money, but you’ll also be giving new life to pre-loved items – a win-win for your wallet and the planet.

Stick to Neutral Colors
Eileen Fisher’s collections are often dominated by neutral colors—black, white, gray, beige, and soft earth tones. These hues are not only versatile but also timeless, making them perfect for mixing and matching. A neutral palette allows you to create a cohesive wardrobe that can be styled in countless ways.
Build a Capsule Wardrobe
Eileen Fisher’s designs lend themselves perfectly to a capsule wardrobe of timeless, versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. This not only simplifies your wardrobe but also helps you avoid the temptation of buying trendy items that won’t last.
Accessorize Lightly
When it comes to accessorizing the Eileen Fisher way, less is definitely more. The brand’s designs speak for themselves, so accessories are typically understated and minimal. Stick to simple, high-quality accessories like a neutral-toned scarf, a pair of classic earrings, or a sleek leather tote.

By focusing on these key elements – minimalist silhouettes, layered looks, and sustainable fabrics – you can channel the serene sophistication of Eileen Fisher without the hefty price tag. Remember, true style isn’t about designer labels; it’s about how you wear your clothes with confidence and grace.
And lastly, I would be remiss not to mention that J. Jill has a very similar aesthetic in many of their collections at a fraction of the cost of Eileen Fisher.
Are you a fan of the Eileen Fisher aesthetic?

Thank you, Jennifer. Seeking out quality, simplicity and timeless, classic lines is doable! Making wiser choices can take us there. We don’t all have the same budget or budget priorities. It’s nice to see this inclusive approach to style.
Thank you so much for this Jennifer. You’ve really done your research and I love the options you’re presented.
It’s not that you can’t have the look, it’s just how you go about achieving it.
I also buy most of my EF on eBay.
I also like the Canadian brand Sympli.
The pants look very comfortable and stylish but have been so far out of my budget that I don’t have any EF clothes. You look so elegant, stylish and comfortable in your EF items Jennifer. A woman can dream.
That’s why I wrote this post if women would like to get the look for less.
The Eileen Fisher brand delights. Its workhorse performance and easy care is enhanced even more by the brand’s dedication to the environment. And, the brand makes clothing for women. Not just those of a certain height or weight. I was an early adopter. I shop the brand on her site and open the wallet for key items. I applaud the brand’s practices. However, I’m price sensitive. eBay and sales supply the bulk of what I buy. Today’s post is brilliant. With escalating prices, even eBay and sales can be impossible. Today’s pointers for how to achieve her look are wonderful. I vary from one of your tips, though — accessorizing. I’m known to wear one statement piece — a leopard shoe, bold earring, baroque pearl necklace or bracelet. Thankfully, just one.
I love your statement piece way of accessorizing! Sounds smashing, Peggy.
I like the look of Ef on others, but not on myself. However, I may go to my local Dillard’s and see if any of EF’s current pieces might work for me. I am about the same size as you, but in the past every EF piece I have tried just looked was too over-sized and sloppy on me. The clothes were wearing me. You look great in your Eileen Fisher pieces. In addition to the baggy fit problem, I also never felt good in the colors EF offered. I am all for neutrals, but they need to be warm neutrals. Golden camels, beiges, warm browns, yellowish creams and ivories, and rusts are my neutrals. Muted, grayed down tones do not suit this very warm-toned woman.
I have noticed in my nearly 70 years on this planet that some lines gravitate toward cool colors and others gravitate toward warm ones. Back in the heyday of Liz Claiborne I could always rely on the line to have many, many warm-toned items. I loved her color palette. A dear friend who is a very soft and cool toned individual had a strong dislike for the brand. I always thought it was because of the color palette. Lands End, on the other hand, never offers much for warm palettes. I love their quality and have bought many times for my “cool” husband. I have a very hard time finding any colors in their offerings that suit me.
Have you tried petites sizing, Kathy? I don’t know your height, but petites sizing has changed from 5’2″ and under to 5’5″ and under in many clothing lines. Not only that, but the measurements changed, too. Might be worth a try if that applies. I am definitely not a petite, but in certain styles like Empire waist sleeveless dresses, that’s what I wear. I prefer the smaller armholes.
So interesting. I…probably unfairly to JJill…call JJill “Eileen Fisher light” because so many of their items mix and match. Chicago is cool today and I am wearing an Eileen Fisher lightweight cassis wool pullover sweater (Eileen outlet) with a Jjill fig lined corduroy jacket…perfect match. And Eileen Fisher Renew is now available in the outlet store or online.
I often refer to J. Jill that way too
I recommend going to a store if you can and trying on so that you know your size. I was quite surprised when I did that. EF runs bigger than other brands. Some other sources not already mentioned: Poshmark, though may not be worth it w/their new buyer protection fees, Nordstrom Rack, Bloomies on sale. Also the regular EF site can have sime decent sales. The later in the season, the better the sale but also more risk of your size being sold out. Finally, EF has some amazing colors, and to me the colors are what’s worth the investment. For me right now it’s “pine!”
Pine sounds gorgeous! I agree, their end of season sales are amazing
I agree on the sizing. EF runs quite large. I have a few pieces purchased NWT on Ebay.
Ivey never purchased EF. I like the look but I look puffy and sloppy in those styles.
I so wish I could wear loose, flowy clothing. Although I’m slender, I’m very busty. I look best in tailored or semi fitted clothing. Eileen Fisher type clothing just looks sloppy on me—but I do wish it would work for me!
Terry, I am the same body type. EF never looks good on me, JJill often does not either. I’ve got to have nice tailoring!
Eileen Fisher jackets and coats fit me perfectly, and after looking in my closet, I confirm every single one I have is EF. But — I purchased them ALL on eBay for a fraction of their retail cost. Every time I veer away from EF, trying for the “look for less,” I am disappointed and feel I wasted money.
I love EF and find that more and more of my wardrobe is made up of her clothes. Her prices do smart, however! I wait for sales and buy very carefully both on the EF site and also on other retail sites like Nordstrom, and including the occasional piece from EF Renew. In my early 70s, I’m finally appreciating quality over quantity. I’m also pleased that she’s moved away from all black, as I find it less flattering especially near my face.
I’m really appreciating the other neutrals she’s offering now too.
I’m sure I’m not your only reader who loves EIleen Fisher but can’t/won’t spend that much on clothing. I have an EF long black silk flowy skirt that must be 25 years old; I wore it to dinner last week and it looked great and I felt great in it. It was an EF outlet purchase and still was a stretch for me, but it has paid me back over the years. Maybe I should head back to the outlet! My go to now is JJill. I love Uniqlo for their lightweight down vests that are a travel essential (also keep one in the car between seasons.)
Thanks for this most useful post.
I find most of my Eileen Fisher on Ebay! I wear the PP ( petite xs) and there’s usually quite a selection! And because they are of such good quality I’ve rarely had a problem. I make sure each seller takes returns for free, just in case there’s an issue. I’ve had luck with the washable crepe pants… I ask for the leg opening measurement so I don’t wind up with the narrow leg whick I don’t care for. I now owns 5 pair, the total paid is less than one pair of new ones!
That’s a great source too!
It’s MONDAY!! 🤣😬🤪
It sure is and it’s been a very busy one.
Eileen Fisher also has a program called Eileen Fisher Renew which rebuys gently used EF garments, cleans, and resells them at a fraction of the original price. I have purchased really good pieces this way and am totally happy with them. You can sign up at EF to be notified of listings.
