Why Granny Panties aka Full-Cut Briefs Are The Best Over 50

Thongs fill an increasingly smaller section in my lingerie drawer these days. I used to think they were mandatory for certain pants and close-fitting skirts but my attitude is changing and I’m much more comfortable now. I’m talking about granny panties, aka full-cut briefs. We’re going there because I’ve found them the best option for my over 50 body.

Granny panties are defined as classic briefs with a high rise and have full coverage in the rear. They’ve been the butt (pun intended) of jokes for years. DescribedĀ as uncool, unsexy and frumpy, they’ve been the panties that every woman was supposed to hate, even women over 50.

The fact is granny panties are comfortable and healthier to wear for many reasons. They minimize muffin top bulge, help conceal lower belly sag and prevent visible panty line. They’re also healthier than thongs if you have hemorrhoids, urinary tract infections or leak a bit when you laugh.

A quick peek around the internet turns up more sites selling full panties than ever before. They come adorned with lace, satin, sheer inserts and silk bows.

These are what I wear most days. They have a vanishing edge at the leg opening with stay-put silicone strips that keep the panties in place without panty line. The light nude is a perfect shade for me that is invisible under white linen pants which are notoriously see through. They have several nudes to choose from so I recommend you choose the one that matches your skin tone the closest

Full-cut briefs are available with high cut leg openings and also in a thong version which defeats the purpose in my mind but each to her own.

Have you discovered full briefs AKA granny panties?

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

Years ago I started wearing Skimp Skamp by Bali. They have a seam down the back, and the fit is great. I had always had a problem with irritation from side seams, so these were the perfect answer. They are readily available in many stores and online and I try to buy them when they are on sale.

  2. THANK YOU for this recommendation. Iā€™ve been following your blog happily for 2+ years. I just love it! Youā€™ve inspired me and Iā€™ve learned a lot. I was at my wits end with underwear. I used to get a certain style at Nordstrom Rack for years. As they phased them out, I bought the last 30 pairs, but that was a few years ago and whatā€™s left of them is an embarrassment! The search for new ones was not going well. My body has changed and so has the underwear market. I took a leap of faith and followed your recommendation on Black Friday and bought these. Theyā€™re great and my search is over. Thank you so much for bringing so many great products and accessories to our attention.

    1. Thank you so much, Marian. I’m thrilled you’re here and so glad you found me… and these panties;) They really are great.

Thanks for this information Jennifer. I tried these Soma Vanishing Edge “Granny Panties” when you mentioned them in a previous post…..they are the best! I have recommended them to my family and friends. These great finds and suggestions are one of the many reasons I follow you.
    Thanks again!

  4. The $255 panties I see are sold out. I need to know who bought them!!! ????

    1. I bet her husband isnā€™t tossing them in the laundry with his jeans ????

I love this topic! Years ago I did try thongs, but I too could not adjust to the fit. I’m surprised so many ladies have complained about the comfort of bikinis because they were my go-to panties for years. I’ve always loved a sexy pair of lace panties, however since my body shape has changed over the years I had to leave the bikinis alone. So, since I need some lower tummy support, briefs ( or as you call them, granny panties) look the best and lace briefs are my ultimate sexy!!

    1. Thatā€™s why I left bikinis behind..pardon the pun. I prefer some extra tummy support and waist high briefs give me that.

Iā€™m 75, and still wear the Jockey French Cut and find them very comfortable, no lines or bulges. GREAT TOPIC
Facial hair would be a great one also. TKS for all subjects.

  7. What a topic! Too bad we can’t, somehow, manage to try before we buy. You have to spend money to find out if a panty fits your body or not. I’ve never been able to wear the French cut panties, because I don’t have a French cut b … “bottom.” I hate the stigma that goes with granny panties, but love the comfort. I’ll be looking into a lot of these suggestions. I love, too, that I haven’t read a single snarky, hateful comment! Love the positivity and uplifting comments.

    1. I donā€™t like how they look but theyā€™re comfy and invisible under my clothes! Thatā€™s a win for me.

  8. Love this post! I’m a bit younger but I wear briefs too as I find them more comfortable than thongs or bikinis. I also need 100% cotton and those are hard to find sometimes. Does anyone have any recommendations for 100% cotton briefs, preferably high cut, that don’t have that sporty look like Jockeys?

    1. Christi Carlisto says:

I can’t wear cotton and have been out looking for new panties after reading this blog! Wacol and Natori had a nice high cut legs in nice cotton. Think they were 3/$45! On Gossamer has a nice brief too!

  9. I’ve been wearing briefs (I won’t call them by that dopey and demeaning name) since I was a child in the ’50s, a teen in the ’60s, a hippie in the ’70s, and forever beyond (65 now). Every other style was uncomfortable and/or created lines, ripples, or bulges in some spot or another. On me, briefs are the smoothest and most invisible–way more so than hipsters or bikinis. As for thongs–just gross. Maybe I’m weird, but I don’t find briefs frumpy.

    1. We don’t find them frumpy either, Linda! They’re the most flattering and comfy.

  10. I’m crazy about the Soma vanishing edge boy shorts. Extremely comfy, no panty lines, and sexy in their own special way! Also high quality. Buy them on sale – buy 3, get 2 free. Great value.

  11. I do.and love them….

  12. Thankns for the introduction to some new panties. I like the patterns. Just purchased some new ones by Bali and my 86 year old husband loves the fun patterns. Who knew? I’ll try some of these Soma’s.

  13. I love the Soma vanishing edge panties. They host sales often and when they do, I stock up. Great post!

  14. I love those vanishing edge Soma panties! I like the high cut leg version — more comfy to sit in, for me. My only complaint is that I wish they would stay stocked in all colors. Frustrating when you need a pair of, say, red and they don’t offer them this season! So I’ve learned to stock up if I like a color!

Jennifer, I love how REAL you are!! Hilarious, but important, topic today! I am really high-class- ha!- I wear panties I buy at Walmart. My sister let me know about these a few months ago because she had been wearing them for a while and I love them. They are comfort plus. They are Secret Treasures Ladies Microfiber Brief. They come in a six-pack and are oh so light feeling on. And I haven’t noticed panty lines with them either. I wore bikini and hip style underwear when I was young, but alas these do not work well with my 62 year old body. Have I ever worn a thong? No, and have never had the desire to- they seem just awful to me.

    1. I used to wear bikinis too but at my age, they all roll down which is so uncomfortable. Why suffer?? Those sound great! I’ll check them out.

    2. I just last week got some of these “Secret Treasures” at Walmart, too! This post is really timely because I think at age 57 it’s time for me to move to grannies. They actually look better on me than my old, shrunken hipsters. And they’re great under pants.

      1. I agree that they look better on my 60 year old body too!

  16. I love Soma. My favorite granny panties are the lace high leg brief.

  17. Terrific subject! Love hearing that I’m among the many responders that have never tried a thong. Not that I haven’t considered it but I imagine discomfort. Now, Jennifer, how about discussing another subject not often spoken of: facial hair. I refuse to use chemicals on my face so what is the alternative? Shaving that peach fuzz? Other?

    1. Oh Faye, you’re singing my tune. I’ll write an update soon šŸ™‚

  18. I have been wearing Soma modern briefs for years. I love them. I haven’t found anything else as comfortable. They have great sales.

Like others, bikini panties are uncomfortable and roll easily. Thongs were NEVER an option!

We have to learn to go for comfort and ignore media hype.
