Monday Musings: Jones Road and Athleisure

I’m always on the hunt for matte eye shadows in cool, neutral shades. I often find the perfect color as part of a palette containing multiple colors. Those always seem like a waste to me because I focus on my favs, and the others go unused. You may remember that Bobby Brown sold her makeup company to Estee Lauder…along with her name, several years ago. She made amazing products, but I gradually stopped using them because they aren’t clean and they aren’t cruelty-free. Then I discovered Jones Road Beauty matte eye shadows.

Several months ago, I discovered her new line, Jones Road Beauty which is clean and it is cruelty-free! There is a lot of buzz about her miracle balm on all the social media channels. I will probably try it, but for now, I zeroed in on her eye shadows and have been wearing this trio almost exclusively for five months.

They’re velvety smooth and blend beautifully, which I would expect from Bobby Brown, a professional makeup artist of world renown. First, I cover my entire lid with the Chic shade, then I fill in the crease using the Ash shade, then dampen my thin brush and line my upper and lower eyes using the Smokey Grey shade. My favorite brushes are part of this kit. She currently makes fifteen colors so you can customize the look you want without having to buy extraneous shades you’ll never use.

Here’s my typical everyday makeup using the Jones Road Beauty eyeshadows. On a side note, my daughter tried them and was not a fan which goes to show how personal our makeup favorites can be.

Athleisure update

I mentioned in my Sunday newsletter that I bought a new pair of these Brooklyn ankle pants for our upcoming trip to Portugal. BTW- if you’re not signed up, you can here.

They come in six colors, in regular length, petite and tall. I am wearing the color they call Abalone Grey, but it’s a light beige to my eyes. The petite is 2″ shorter than this and too short for me, but great for gals who are truly petite. I’m wearing the Ease In Top shirt in the yummiest chocolate brown shade. It has a loose fit, so I was able to go down to a small. They say it’s for yoga practice etc., but I think it works equally well for every day because it’s roomy and super soft. It comes in several other colors too,

This everlasting tank is fabulous in eight colors in a featherweight, stretch woven fabric with UPF 50+. This will travel like a dream, so came home with me in white. It comes in XXS-3X in regular, petite, and tall. How’s this gorgeous cranberry shade for a cool-toned fall option? This wrap is yummy and soft and comes in eleven colors. No matter what the website says, I think it’s meant for any time you want a cozy wrap made from sustainable fabric that’s easy care.

This look gives a whole new meaning to the phrase athleisure suit, don’t you think? The Avenue blazer paired with the Brooklyn pant and Everlasting tank would be wrinkle-free all day. The jacket has modern, sleek lines and closes with a single snap in front. I found it runs small, so size up.

I’m curious…how do you handle your wardrobe when your weight fluctuates? Do you keep multiple sizes? Do you change the type of clothes you wear?

Thanks for reading, and be sure to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Really love the pieces you showed us and the makeup is lovely! My weight has crept up by no more than 10 pounds in 6 years. I am at 145 but somehow itā€™s all shifted in unflattering ways! Very disconcerting because I donā€™t enjoy shopping. I either grab and run home to try them on or order online. Only now those sizes donā€™t work for me so I will have no choice but to shop the hard way (for me). Oh, save me from t-shirts, Jersey, ā€œtravel knitā€ and all of their kin, they do an awesome job of pinpointing my worst spots! I may wear nothing but woven fabrics in the future. Enjoyed seeing your beautiful daughter. Warmest wishes to you from North Carolina USA

    1. I hear you about the woven fabrics, but knit are so comfy!

  2. First, you and your lovely daughter look beautiful and so natural. I have not tried Jones Road eyeshadow but truly love the colors you both wear.
I too try to stick with the natural tones. So I may give JR a try..

    1. Thank you so much Lin

  3. I bought some Jones Road Miracle Balm and I’m so-so about it.
It smells good, and I like the coverage – I have the neutral tone.
Once I figured out that it’s better applied with a sponge I like it better. However, it’s $38 and I still need concealer.

But then as my feed filled up with make-ups I came across Burt’s Bees “Miracle” balm.
It’s a smaller quantity, with a correspondingly smaller price. It doesn’t have the nice smell but it goes on, with a brush or sponge, very much the same as JR.
I got a darker current color and desert rose in that, for about half what one tub of JR costs.
I am not a huge make-up person, more often than not product dries out or separates before I use it up.
If you are tempted to try the JR Miracle Balm I suggest checking out the Burt’s Bees product. If I’m going to toss a container with unused product I’d rather have only paid $8 for it. I’ve never seen it in a store, I think the only place to get it is online.

  4. I’m a day late on this post. I have the Jones Road miracle balm for face and also blush…I will say I initially liked the balm, it’s tricky too much and you can look varnished. I think it all depends on your primer. I love the blush however, not as shiny or sticky. The jars are so generous that I’ll probably not need to purchase again for awhile. I rotate my makeup so this isn’t an everyday application..For me, I wouldn’t purchase the balm, but I’d get the blush again…..

    1. Thanks for sharing that Nancy.

  5. Gorgeous photos of you and your daughter wearing the eyeshadow. I like the athleta slacks fit on you, however I like them styled a bit higher at the ankle, and the top of the shoe not touching the hem of the slacks. The color online is gray but yes it looks beige in your photos! Thanks for reviewing the Jones Road Make-up, I was just wondering about it!
I like the matte eyeshadows, as I have crepey eyelids and it smooths them out.
    Have a great trip!

    1. The pants are beige in person too. No clue why they call it dolphin grey. I like mine a smidge shorter too but not as short as the petite would be.

  6. The Avenue blazer looks beautiful on you — so flattering and chic. In fact, I wouldn’t have given it a second glance on the Athleta website if I hadn’t seen it on you first.

    1. I was shocked to find it. It seems so out of character for them.

  7. I’ve been using some of the Jones Road products as well. I started with the foundation and a face pencil and sharpener. I also bought a foundation brush but tend to apply the foundation with my fingers instead of the brush. I’m happy with those items. I recently bought two eye shadows–the ash and antique rose. I like the consistency of the shadows and the cool color of the ash for my fair complexion and white hair. (I’m a winter.) I’m still deciding whether I like the rose color! I won’t hesitate to try more Jones Road products in the future.

I’m also a fan of Athleta sportswear and have owned 3-4 pairs of shorts and a couple of skorts for several years. They hold up well! I tried the Brooklyn ankle pants but returned them because they seemed really baggy. Maybe I needed to size down; they look great on you.

    1. Happy to hear thereā€™s more JRB I should try. The Ash is perfect for my coloring too.

  8. Hi Jennifer,
Beautiful photo of you and your daughter. Two quick questions? What do you mean by ā€˜cleanā€™ when referring to Bobby Brown eyeshadows?
A couple of posts ago you were thinking about purchasing a Cuyana tote bag. Have checked their website and am going to order one, but am unsure of which colour to order (cannot visit a shop as I live in Australia). I was wondering if you have seen the range in person and if the ā€˜pebbleā€™ is a light grey? Did you order the backpack?
    Thank you
    Susan

    1. By clean, I mean it doesn’t contain suphates, petrochemicals and other questionable ingredients.I haven’t bought the backpack yet because I haven’t been home.

  9. Elizabeth says:

    1. I stumbled on to the Brooklyn pant last year. I was given a gift card, found the Brooklyn pant and a sweatshirt dress. The pant in petite is perfect. I wore the pants so often I purchased a second pair.
2 my clothes are in tubs by season and (fit) size. When I go up or down that is when I review the clothes in the tub to decide that I want it to wear the item or not. I do this when I open the bin, not when I pack it. I have some classics that never age, keep their shape etc that are 5-8 years old.

  10. I have tried the Bobby Brown line and I don’t care for it! It does give a gliw but I find the product to be very sticky. You can’t touch uour skin. I tried to return it. They told me to keep it ,share it, or donate the products and refunded me. So great customer service. I fluctuate in weight by 5 pounds depending on what I eat. I keep size 8 and 10. Small and mediums.

    1. Do you mean the Jones Road?

  11. I have the Jones Road miracle balm in blush. It has a nice texture and gives a touch of color. As someone else commented, the color fades over time. I also bought the foundation which has a similar texture. However, the first jar was grainy so they sent me a second jar for free but now the second jar has turned grainy. Both the balm and the foundation are shiny, which some women wonā€™t like. I like eyeshadow but already have more than Iā€™ll ever use!

  12. I’ve been thinking about trying Jones Road, and I’m curious how the Miracle Balm works for others. I’ve heard mixed reviews. Your lovely daughter looks a lot like you. šŸ™‚

So happy to see you visit Athleta. I bought a pair of their yoga pants this spring and they’re the best ever. So I’ve been thinking of a few more pieces. The wrap is gorgeous and the loose top does look perfect for yoga. So nice to see them on a “real” person.

    1. I’ll let you know what I think when I try that miracle balm.

Fabulous mother/daughter picture!! You are both blessed!!

    1. We are! Thank you so much

  14. Do not wear eye makeup as frequently as would like (to avoid Blepharitis = bacteria = Demodex/Eyelash mites) but do appreciate you sharing the brand and your formula since we have similar eye/skin/hair coloring so shall definitely will consider. As to the Athleisure Wear, did pin it for future reference so thank you on both accounts. Last but not least to ‘briefly’ answer your question; I usually have divided my garments into high and low end pieces with the latter often having a different fate (as usually donate if not worn after a year and don’t fit) than the former as take into consideration can they be altered and/or styled differently? i.e.: Shoulder and hip width/ arm and leg length does ‘not’ change’. The top that is too snug through the chest can it be worn open whereas if too large, can it be taken in or belted? etc. With that being said and needless to say as a result, ‘yes’ according to label I have a variety of sizing in my closet. -Brenda-

    1. I do the same, regarding price, Brenda. If it was expensive, I will hold on to it longer or have it altered.

    2. I have been using the Jones Road Beauty balm and the blush (which you can also use on lips, I really like them. Great product so far, thanks for all your tips.

      1. Good to hear! I love double duty products.

  15. Jones Road that is a new brand for me. That is what I like reading your blog, I see items I never would have know about. Cheers to you. FYI I went shopping in Grass Valley, wonderful boutique and shoe stores. Wow that little town has really changed.

    1. Grass Vallet is really cute. I agree, small towns have changed a lot and have some fun unique places.

  16. I hope some of your readers will comment on what to do when weight fluctuates. Just like you, I have gained weight this past year. You and I started at the same weight and height and we now weigh almost exactly the same. (I am hovering at 143. It is the heaviest I have ever been.) I have wondered how you have kept your extra weight from showing. I really cannot see it in your photos. I’m jealous!
Some of my wardrobe just does not fit currently. I find myself mostly wearing pieces that have some stretch, like my collection of t-shirt dresses, or pieces that don’t have a defined waist, like some A-line knit dresses. I tend to layer jackets or lightweight cardigans over the dresses to disguise my belly fluff. Clinton Kelly of What Not To Wear fame always said the best defense against a little extra in the middle is a jacket. I agree.
Some of my favorite blazers that were purchased many years ago when I was 15 to 20 pounds lighter are unwearable. Some that were a little bigger to start with I can still wear with a light layer underneath, but I can’t comfortably button them.
I am about ready to purge the smallest blazers and jackets (size 4s) from my closet. I don’t foresee myself ever getting back to 123 pounds. I’ll be 69 in 2 months and I am trying to be realistic. I am keeping the jackets that are just a little small (a few larger 4s and 6s) and hoping I can get rid of some of my extra weight. I have purchased one new wool blazer in a size 8 from Talbots for this fall. I am still waiting for it to arrive. Hopefully, it will fit well now and will still work with heavier sweaters underneath if I lose weight.
The struggle is real, ha, ha!

    1. I hate tight clothes and find we look slimmer in clothes that are a bit looser. I’ve replaced some of my jeans because they were just so uncomfortable. I agree about jackets and all third layers. They do help hide a multitude of sins. I will be having a wardrobe cleanout when I get home.

  17. As to your question re weight fluctuations, I do keep several sizes in totes, so if need be I donā€™t have to buy all new. I only keep my favourites and quality pieces. I find at different sizes my taste in clothing changes. When Iā€™m slim and at my best weight, my clothes are more fitted but if I gain I tend to wear more body skimming tops but never oversized.
How nice you are spending your summer in Vancouver and able to enjoy time with Vanessa. Our bond with our daughters is special and I can see she makes you smile.

    1. You made a very important point, and I find myself doing the same. I do slip into oversized garments but prefer to wear them at my lower weight.

  18. I am hopping over to Jones road right now. Those shadows are just what I am looking for!! I am a huge fan of Athleta and that jacket is fabulous!

    1. Youā€™ll love them.

  19. You and your daughter are both beautiful!
Iā€™m in the reverse. Have tried Jones Road Miracle Balm and foundation, but not the eyeshadows. The Miracle Balm is interesting. When first applied, I think itā€™s too bright. An hour later, canā€™t tell itā€™s there. It looks like it would be shiny in the skin, but itā€™s not. Provide a nice glow (while it lasts). A little of the balm goes a long way.
I like the foundation. It reminds me of her crĆØme foundation from the ā€œoldā€ Bobby Brown. It definitely needs a foundation brush to apply.
Thank you for reminding me of Athleta. They do a great job of providing environmentally sensitive materials at an approachable price.
The Berry wrap in gorgeous and has my name on it!

    1. Thanks for the info on her miracle balm and foundation. My skin has changed so much lately it needs all the glow I can give it.

The Jones Road eye shawdows look good on you and your daughter. I might have to try them its hard to find matte eyeshadow. Thank You!

Beautiful pic of you and your daughter!

  22. Your daughter is absolutely beautiful just like her mother.

    1. She is, thank you so much.

  23. What color pants are you wearing in the first picture? Yours look off white but they are calling them grey. Tks.

    1. They call it Abalone Grey but they’re a soft beige.

  24. Unfortunately, all of my summer clothes were uncomfortable and looked bad. So I watched for your sales links and Pamela Lutrells as well and started replacing everything in March. Iā€™m done for now but it has been an expensive few months. Sadly, my weight went down about 5 pounds but my waist has thickened to push me into 12P. The same with my larger bust, needed to move from some Mediums to Large Petite. You look wonderful in the black suit. Great for travel and still comfortable.

  25. Sandra Baron says:

Thank you for letting us know about Jones Road. I felt Bobbi Brownā€™s cosmetics had changed. Iā€™ll be checking out Jones Road. I enjoy your posts very much.
    Thank you,
    Sandra Baron
    P.S. your daughter is lovely

    1. I love these shadows so I’m anxoius to try a few more of her things. Thank you, my daughter is fabulous if I do say so myself.

  26. Hi Jennifer! I just wanted to comment (my first time) on how much I loved the picture of you and your hubby on Sundayā€™s post and how sweet you both look together. And your beautiful daughter on todayā€™s post is also awesome. Sundayā€™s post had some good articles and I especially enjoyed the one about the aliens (lol) because it discussed disassociation, which resonated with me – not so much because of aliens, but because it can be applied to everything else going on in our lives. It verbalized and put into perspective so many things relating to our busy and hectic (and information-laden) lives these days. Just thought youā€™d like to know that your posts make for interesting reading and conversation, even outside of the wonderful clothing ideas!

    1. Iā€™m so happy you enjoyed that one. I found it fascinating. I do like to share more than fashion so Iā€™m glad to know itā€™s interesting to others too. Being well rounded is important to me.

  27. Trisha king says:

I was just on the Jones Beauty site before I read your article and the site wasnā€™t working. I would like to order several of her items as I have gotten good reviews from friends that have tried them.
Thank you for sharing the blazer, I am going to order it as I have a trip to Greece in the fall.

    1. Hopefully the site is loading now. You can find the JRB eye shadows on Amazon but they’re almost twice the price!
