Monday Musings on Butter Yellow and Save or Splurge

I’ve been musing about color a lot over the last few weeks and written about it here and here. Over the last several months, I’ve read this Little Book of Color, The Secret Lives of Color, and this book on Joy, which covers a lot about color. Clearly, I’m fascinated. And yet, when I glance into my closet, I’m greeted by a serene sea of neutrals. Soft beiges, taupes, crisp whites, ivory, and gentle grays are my comfort zone, my style sanctuary, and honestly, they feel right on me.

CARDIGAN

But as someone who works with fashion daily, I see a lot of clothes and accessories, and every so often, I find myself tempted by something unexpected. Lately? It’s been butter yellow. Yes, yellow. A shocking concept for me because I don’t own a single yellow item…even in my decor. Butter yellow is having a real moment in 2025, and it’s one of the biggest color trends for spring…right alongside soft pink. I have to say, it’s also looking a lot more wearable this time around.

I’ll be the first to admit that yellow and I have a complicated relationship. Its warmth can clash with my cool undertone, but there’s something intriguing about this new crop of buttery, pastel yellows. The key for me will be to find a version that’s soft enough to flatter…while giving me all the calm vibes of a neutral. That may sound like a tall order, and it might not work at all, but I believe in keeping an open mind. Fashion should evolve with us, not leave us behind. And if buttery yellow doesn’t work, there’s always blush pink, which has been good to me over the years.

I firmly believe that if a color makes you happy, there’s always a way to make it work for your coloring and style. You can wear it further from your face, layer it with colors that do flatter, or just add tiny touches that help you feel current. The goal isn’t to follow rules to the letter, it’s to feel confident and well styled every time we step out the door. I’m on the hunt for a butter yellow cardigan, and there seems to be lots to choose from this season.

Life Update

My husband is getting his hip replaced today. I know many of you have replacement parts, as do many of your partners or spouses. This is our first, and I admit to being a bit nervous. It sounds so radical, yet everyone we talk to is thrilled with the results and says they wish they’d done it sooner. I’d appreciate any wisdom you can share about maneuvering during the recuperation process.

Save or Splurge

SHOP THE OUTFITS

Blue with white is such a fresh combo for spring, and I’ve already broken out my white jeans for the season. Here are some paired with a medium blue sweater, woven flats, a straw bag, a floral scarf, and gold jewelry. Can you tell the save from the splurge?

  1. Love the butter yellow, but more concerned about your husband. I’ve had two knee replacements and two broken hips with pins. My best advice… stay on top of the pain with a regular med schedule. Don’t be a hero… do the exercises the Doc tells you, no more and no less. It’s just another day at the office for goodDoctors and they know what works best. Problems can occur with over-doing. Good luck with your new “nurse’s cap”. On you it will look good!

    1. Thank you so much Joyce!

  2. Cheryll Sampson says:

Best wishes on the surgery. I love yellow- it is like wearing sunshine. I have shoes and purses in yellow. I had a yellow dress years ago, but it had to be ironed. It did not last too long in my closet as I hate to iron.

  3. I am hoping that your husband’s surgery went very well!!
My mom had one hip done and she did great. She was in the Why did I wait so long? Club.
Best wishes for a very speedy recovery!

    1. Thanks so much, he did well

  4. Hi Jennifer, I have two replaced hips, and the difference it made in my daily pain level was incredible. He’s going to feel so much better! Best wishes to both of you.

  5. With my cool skin tone, I avoid butter yellow and most colors with yellow in them. I tend to look washed out, so I will be not be buying it. Likewise, I do not wear gold or brass colored jewelry or accessories. However, I have purchased items in the soft pink this year, as they seem to have a femininity that I like.
My husband had the hip surgery. Before the surgery, he was in so much much that he would yelp out in his sleep. After the surgery, he was like a new man. In my husband’s case, he was in significant discomfort for the first two weeks after surgery, but on Day 15, he was like a new man and able to take steps without pain for the first time in years. Good luck to your husband and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

    1. Wow! That’s amazing for your husband

  6. Suzie Kiddoo says:

I am sure your husband will be fine! We are all so lucky to live in a time when we have these surgeries available. It isn’t easy but once you go through PT, it really is such a gift. I have had a reverse shoulder replacement. It was a fairly new surgery when I had it. My husband has had one knee done. We are in our low 80’s and grateful we are able to keep being active!

  7. Hi Jennifer,
I love bright yellow and wear it as often as I can. I have warm undertones with strawberry blond hair so it is a good color for me. You inspired me to get a new yellow cardigan. Talbots had the perfect one and it was 40% off today. Thank you for helping all of us to look our better!

  8. Yellow is a color I tend to steer away from, it tends to make me look jaundice. Mixed with other colors is ok.
Prayers for a speedy recovery for your husband. My husband has only had knee replacement so no words of wisdom except the PT really helps with healing.

  9. Had hips replaced over 20 years ago. Still going strong. wish I had done it sooner. Results good and long lasting. Still use the pull-on device to put on my socks. Best operation ever.

not a single yellow thing but didn’t notice until you mentioned it.

  10. I had my hip replaced 11 years ago at age 57. It was truly life changing. Arthritis had made walking very uncomfortable and I could feel my life becoming more narrow. But as a result of the replacement I’m able to hike, cycle, dance, play with our toddler grandson, and do anything else I want. Like the fountain of youth! It will be important for your husband to follow doctor’s orders during recovery AND be diligent about physical therapy. You get to be his cheerleader. He’s going to do great!

    1. I hope his success is as good as yours!

  11. My 67 husband had shoulder replacement surgery on his left shoulder three weeks ago. At 37 years of age, he had a stroke which left him with one working arm – the left one. We were both very nervous about anything going wrong with the surgery on his good arm, but he is doing great… And at last pain-free after many years of suffering. I wish the same happy results and quick healing for your husband. I know you will take good care of him as he needs help for awhile!

    1. I’m so happy to hear your husbands surgery went well!

  12. Connie Knowles says:

I wish your husband a speedy recovery!

  13. Jennifer, very excited for your husband! I’ve had both hips replaced and always surprised when asked if I’m in any pain. No …….that’s why you have the surgery, to eliminate the pain. My last replacement literally was out-patient surgery. First surgery of the day with plenty of time for the assessment to allow me to go home. I was 73.

    1. Amazing Suzi! Thanks, I hope he ends up pain free too

  14. Healing thoughts go out to your husband. Take care of yourself as his caregiver too. My husband had both hips resurfaced and traveled from Illinois to South Carolina to have the best surgeon do both. Best tips for afterwards, stay ahead of the pain if pain medication is needed or prescribed. Use a large black plastic trash bag on carseats to sit on. Easier to ease/swivel out of the car. Physical therapy is great to help get things going correctly if he wants best results from his hip surgery before having his knee replacement. Love butter yellow, but not one of my best colors. Love that blue denim purse you featured.

    1. That plastic bag idea is pure genious!! Thank you, we’ll try this because the car was very hard for him to get in and out of. We drove a long way for his surgeon because we read he was the best.

  15. JP Thompson says:

I’ve had both knees and one hip done, and the hip was by far the easiest. LOTS of ice will help, and doing your home exercise PT helps recovery. I’m 8 months out from my surgery, and I’m skipping the Mothers’ Day 5K, but I am doing the 2-mile walk. Sending good thoughts for calm and healing (and patience for both of you!).

    1. That’s amazing! Thanks so much

  16. Personal trainer here, I work with post PT hip/ knee replacement clients. Yes, use pain management drugs . Yes, definitely do the exercises ! Yes, hide car keys. Yes, my clients are all glad they did it!
    Good luck!

  17. You must be a mind reader! Just yesterday I bought a pair of butter yellow Dolce Vita rattan flats after eyeing them online for weeks. But then I realized I have almost nothing to go with them as I don’t own a single yellow item. I have painted several rooms in our house pale yellow but have never liked to wear any shade of yellow. So now I’m on the lookout for butter yellow summer tops. I won’t know how that shade looks on me until I try it on as I’ve always avoided it.
I wish you and your husband all the best during his recovery!

    1. The yellow will be fabulous as a pop against navy, gray, white, brown…lots of other colors.Thank you

  18. I’ve had my knee replacement and both hips. It’s so important to do your physical therapy exercises at home every day. I set an alarm on my iPad for three times a day – 10:00, 2:00, 6:00. And, the pain meds cause awful constipation so he’ll need to stay on top of that with laxatives. He’ll be pleased he had it done and be anxious to move onto his knee. It gives you your mobility back and the biggest plus is the lack of pain.
I’ve never tried yellow. I’m not sure it would suit my colouring. Like you, I need cool colours. But, it is so very cheerful!

    1. Great idea about the alarm! I will suggest it

  19. Mary Lou Holt says:

The butter yellow is the perfect shade for blondes, it’s on my summer color chart.

Best of luck to your husband! I’ve heard hip is the easiest surgery to recover from, and I can attest to knees being the worst! I’ve had two bunionectomies, two knee replacements, two thumb joint replacements, a baseball-sized morgagni hernia, and a quintuple heart bypass! I’m the surgery queen! 😄

    1. There’s a yellow on mine too. Thanks so much

  20. I am almost ready to celebrate my 2 year anniversary for my new hip. Everyone is different, so encourage your husband to go at his rate. It was my first replacement, and I was discouraged because everyone told me it was so easy. Not quite my case, but I am so very glad I did it when I did. I’d recommend he take his painkillers on schedule and stay ahead of it. Especially the next few days.

    1. Thanks Donita! I am encouraging him to do just that

  21. Our friend Stephanie is under the knife for her second hip surgery right now! She did really well with her first hip but really needed the second one. I didn’t know that they did same day surgery on hips! Make sure they give you written instructions for home care. You will not remember verbal instructions very well. I’m also a retired RN. There are products out there like MiraLax for constipation. Have him take his pain medication at least one hour before PT. Then he will be more cooperative with the work. Your husband looks like a tall man next to you, make sure he is able to stand and walk with his walker before you take him home today. Insist. One night in the hospital may be needed post anesthesia. Everyone is different. I had my right knee done and it took me three weeks to recover from it. I did the PT and my daily home exercises. Until people see my scar, they don’t realize that I had it done. I did have to stop downhill skiing but more from balance issues and a sense of caution than ability. We are fortunate that technology has gotten really good in these procedures and allowed us all to remain active in our golden years. Hugs coming your way from Colorado. I don’t wear yellow, it makes my skin look sallow.

    1. Thanks Sydney. I agree, we are sooo lucky to have these options

  22. It’s sad to be afraid of color. Yellow has been in my wardrobe since childhood, and I’m happy to see it trending. My mother said yellow made her look sallow (which I think was all in her head) so I got to wear the yellow for her.

  23. I had my left hip replaced 8 years ago and just had my right knee replaced 3 weeks ago. I highly recommend making a medication chart with names of medications, frequency to take, instructions, and mark the time as you take them. My meds have such a variety of instructions, i.e. take 1x day, 2x day with food, every 4-6 hrs., try to spread intervals between doses, etc. It gets confusing. I also added a laxative column. There is also a great medication reminder app called Medisafe. You can have multiple profiles and they have some cute reminder sounds.

I also recommend an ice machine. They are available with a variety of features and start at $150 for a basic one or you can rent the top of the line machines that have programmed timers and do not need ice. I am icing as we speak.

Wishing your husband a speedy recovery. You get your rest too.

    1. We are writing the meds down because it’s so hard to keep track of!

  24. Perfectly normal to be concerned with your husband’s surgery, but how nice for him to be out of pain down the road.
I saw a whole display of soft buttery yellow at Nordy’s the other day and wondered how to style that color. I love how you’ve done it with the blue! Soft, fresh, spring vibes!
The save or splurge outfits today are another hard one. I picked the bag that was the spendy one but thought the save sweater looked more expensive.

  25. Yellow – I too never wear yellow unless there is a faint hint in a scarf. I love seeing all the yellow daffodils in bloom.
So far no replacements for me. I always hear hip is the easiest to recover from – friends have had it done. But knees are a challenge – a small % have no major improvement and are in pain . My brother is still having knee issues 1 1/2 years later! Ouch!

    1. Oh that is a shame, I’m sorry to hear it.

  26. Thoughts and prayers for successful surgery and recovery . I know many friends who have had the surgery. Very good results for them .
I need to try on a buttery top to see how it looks . I am warm toned skin with silvery white hair . More white I think .

  27. Jennifer, wishing you and your husband well with his surgery. A very good friend had hip replacement late in October, he was up and down his stairs within 4 days of the surgery and back on his bowling team last month. It is life changing for the good…..

  28. Wishing your husband a successful surgery and a speedy and smooth recovery!
I am seeing lots of butter yellow, but it is not a color I wear except in scarves. It does not suit my cool coloring.

    1. It’s funny but I’ve never experimented with it since I was in my 20’s, so I’m feeling it’s time. If not now (when it’s everywhere), when. And why not?😉 Thank you

  29. I have had both knees and both hips replaced. The first hip went great. They fractured my ankle when they did the second hip. Had to leave the hospital in a boot and it really slowed my recovery. Also one leg is significatly shorter than the other one. PT is very important for recovery. Walking really helps. Prayers for a speedy recovery for your husbnad.
Even with the issues, I would do it again.

    1. Wow, that’s rough. Thanks for sharing your experience Linda. I’m hoping he feels the same.

  30. I had both hips and one knee replaced within a year. With the second hip, I was walking over a mile around the lake 9 days after surgery. I have had no issues and am so grateful every day for these replacements! Prayers for your husband ….. he should start moving around as soon as possible. I hope he forgets he even had the replacement soon, while he is busy leading his life!

    1. Wow!! That’s so encouraging. Thank you for sharing. How long did you have to wait between the hip and knee. He needs a knee even more than a hip but they wanted to align the leg first.

  31. Elizabeth says:

I have loved colour my entire life (I am now 69), and yellow tops the list by a huge margin. In fact, my après wedding going-away outfit in 1977 was a 3-piece ensemble (slacks, skirt, and jacket) in a gorgeous butter yellow that I sewed myself. I, of course, have other colours in my wardrobe but if, say, a new sweater or shirt comes along, calling my name, my first colour choice is yellow.
I wish your husband a speedy recovery from his surgery.

    1. That’s so fun! Thank you Elizabeth.

  32. Jan Heckroth says:

From my own husband’s experience with hip replacement healing & recovery, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the speed of recovery and how little adjustment to active living it needs. All will be well…

    1. Thanks Jan. I’m hoping so. They just took him back.

      1. Jan Conlin says:

I had hip replacement 10 weeks ago today. The first few days were uncomfortable but I stayed ahead of the pain so it was tolerable. I used a walker for three weeks then a cane for a few days. Rapid improvement from the third week on. Now I have stiffness after sitting for awhile but totally normal mobility. I wish your husband well. It’s an amazing procedure.

      2. Congrats on your surgery. I hope he gets his mobility back too

  33. Nancy Choat says:

Thinking of you & your husband Jennifer & sending healing hugs from Brentwood Bay, Vancouver Island!

  34. I haven’t been in the stores much over the past few months, but when I was recently I saw a lot of yellow. Like you, I wear mostly neutrals. I don’t have any yellow in my closet and I wasn’t even tempted by what I saw, but now that spring weather has arrived I’m wishing that I’d taken a closer look and tried on something in that colour.

    1. Now that my eye is tuned to it I’ll be trying on a lot of it to test out.

  35. I love butter yellow, such a bright cheerful color. I don’t have any butter yellow clothes, so I will keep an eye out. Good luck to hubby, I know he will be fine, the surgeons have this surgery down pat.

    1. They sure do. He said the surgery will only take an hour!

  36. I love bright yellow! It is such a happy color and I get so many compliments when I wear my vest
or floral scarf. Butter yellow is too washed out for me unless it is mixed in with a nice floral, stripe or plaid.

  37. Wishing your husband the best. My SIL has had two replacements and has benefited a lot. Light yellow is nice on others, but if I’m going to spend the money on a new sweater, then I’ll purchase in my good colors. I bought a navy cardigan from Talbots several weeks ago to replace an old one and expect it to be a workhorse in my closet as well. I also got a burnt-red color, which is dressier, to spice things up a bit. These are my last purchases for the foreseeable future.

  38. My friend decided after having hip surgery she wished she hadn’t waited that long. She was really good with her PT. I think that’s really important. My Mom would never wear yellow because she was really blond and felt it made her look washed out. I like it but am kind of on the fence about it I loved it when I was younger and had really dark hair but not so sure about yellow with silver hair. What do you think?💛

    1. We will find out because I’m going to try a ton of it on! My hair is blond with lots of silver 😉

  39. Best wishes for a successful operation and smooth healing process!

  40. My husband has had both hips replaced. He waited a long time to decide on the first, and then was thrilled with the results. Second one started bothering him, and he immediately took care of it, even in though it was still during Covid. He is the peppiest 74 year old of our group and keeps up with our young grandchildren in biking, softball, hiking, racquet sports, etc. No more roller blading for him, but most everything else is a go! Committing to the physical therapy is the key. Take care of yourself in this recovery also – extra driving and chores for you in the interim! Best wishes!

    1. That’s so encouraging! Thank you

  41. Best of luck to your husband for a speedy recovery.

  42. I like yellow, you inspired me to pull out a yellow/white cardigan today and wear it.

As an RN and veteran of seeing my spouse through 2 joint replacements, one key is pain control (guarding against constipation) and don’t neglect the home exercise program he’ll be prescribed by the physical therapist.

    Best,
    Karen

    1. We got all the Rxs for that. Thanks for the reminder about the home exercise. They said he will get a physical therapist but I assume the nagging to do the exercising will fall to me. I’m pretty good at nagging with 47 years of experience.

  43. My husband needs a hip replacement and had a knee replacement about 3 years ago. He is so glad he had his knee done and he was walking in the park in a couple weeks. Best wishes for your husband! Hopefully he will be part of the I wish I had done it sooner club!

    1. I sure hope so. My husband needs a knee the most but they wouldn’t do the knee until they fixed the hip to get the leg in the proper location. My husband wanted to do them together! Thank goodness the Dr said no.

  44. Best wishes for your husband’s surgery and recovery – I haven’t had the surgery myself, but my friends who did all had a good experience and were very happy that they had it done.

  45. Love the yellow trend, always a favorite color of mine (it reminds me of springtime) and most years there is very little available. As for hip replacement, my hubby had one 18 years ago, still going strong. He had lost so much bone they had to lengthen his leg by 3/4 inch. That meant his body had to realign and created new but temporary soreness. One other surprise, which you may already know from friends who have had this done: he couldn’t drive for several weeks. We were not told this until the day of the surgery. It was not a meaningful problem because he was retired and I was working from home so available to drive to doc appointments etc.

    1. No driving! Hmm. That actually make sense. I’ll hide his keys.

  46. Melinda Perkins says:

I have two hip replacements. My second hip surgeon was really wonderful. He had me rent Vena-go for my legs to prevent blood clots instead of the tight stockings. They pump up and go back down, squeezing and releasing your legs and you can wear them all night. You can take them off easily when you need to. He also had me rent an ice machine that was wonderful to prevent any swelling, and I recovered with these helps better than my first recovery. He also had me rent a stationary bicycle that I wrote every day and it communicated electronically with his office so he could monitor my progress .
thoughts and prayers from me for an easy recovery and a wonderful result.

    1. Good idea! He is wearing compression stockings but I hope it’s enough

  47. Kathy Gaffney says:

These joint replacement surgeries have come a long way!! We’re so fortunate to have great health care and to be able to do this and improve our quality of life:). I just had a total knee replacement to improve my quality of life. Why be miserable if there are ways to be better? He’ll be up and walking today, start PT immediately! Hope he has a good recovery🙏🏼.

    1. PY came to the house today to get him started.

  48. Prayers for successful surgery and easy recovery. I still remember my panic when my husband was discharged after quadruple bypass surgery 12 years ago. He’s the RN not me!

Butter yellow thoughts – I have tried a few times over the years since I love it combined with olives, blues and brown but have never felt like me in it. I did wear a butter yellow dress for my son’s wedding 27 years ago but that was to coordinate with the wedding colors.

  49. Kay wolters says:

Make sure your Husband does the therapy and exercises. It makes thebhealing smoother. I have new knees but my sister has had both. Don’t be hard on yourself. Take it a day at a time.

    1. Thanks Kay, I was ottally waisted yesterday so I am taking it easier today

  50. Out patient hip replacement!!!! How lucky are we that we live in these times…. ❤️🙏❤️🙏. You will both ace this!

  51. I was inspired by a previous post on butter yellow and purchased the butter yellow knit shirt. I love it! It works so well with my olive complexion ( I always say, it’s because I’m green!) and wore it with a gray cashmere sweater. I love pastels or “baby” colors compared to the bright neon versions. I purchased many, many years ago a butter yellow cashmere jacket from Talbots and wore it until it literally fell apart! It looked beautiful with flannel gray and camel. I even had a butter yellow sweater set that was also worn to shreds! It’s a beautiful color and is easily worn with grays, camel tan, jeans, white, etc. Thank you for reintroducing me to such a happy and soft color again.

  52. Doris Marie Jonas Hansen says:

I love yellow. Thirty-five years ago, I wanted a yellow dress for my daughter’s wedding and there wasn’t one to be found.

  53. Best of luck to your husband today and as he heals. I have had both hips replaced and I echo the shared comments and would like to recommend that he buy or borrow an ice machine and use it as much as he can as he heals. That machine is a life saver.

    1. We ordered one. Hopefully it will come soon

  54. I just purchased a butter yellow cardigan. I received many compliments this winter when I wore a jersey cowl neck pullover in that color, so I guess it is a color I should embrace. When my husband had knee replacement surgery I didn’t realize how much I would be needed to help him maneuver daily routines like middle of the night runs to the bathroom, wrapping his leg in Saran Wrap (yes!) for a shower, and driving him to appointments. He did fine and I survived it too!
Hope your husband’s surgery and recovery go smoothly, and I know you will be a compassionate caretaker!

  55. The two things that made the most difference in my quality of life in the first two weeks after my hip replacement were a rented hospital bed, so I could easily change position in the night when I wanted to turnover and couldn’t, and a basket on my walker to carry stuff with me. After a couple of weeks all was well and recovery very easy. Best of luck!

    1. We have a bed that adjusts and it is so helpful

  56. My husband has had both of his hips replaced. The recovery period was less than two weeks each time before he was up and walking unassisted. Praying for your husband to have an easy recovery too.

  57. Prayers for your family as your husband undergoes his surgery today. 🙏
    All the best.

  58. Good morning! I have one pale yellow item… a v-neck cabled cotton pullover . Years ago I had my colors “done” and no one could decide if I’m a winter or a summer. So they suggested the less vivid winter colors and the more saturated summer ones. The pastel yellow in the winter colors is the same as my sweater! As long as it isn’t at all gold, and is very pale, I can wear it. Lately too many items seem too intensely yellow.

  59. Healing prayers for your husband today.

  60. Your hubs will be soooooooo happy – rehab will be tough now and then and doing the exercises is vital and from what you have shared about him I am sure he will be on top of the routine. There still a few things (like Pilates leg circles) that are not suggested but five years out I find I can easily modify and circle! Mostly importantly his hip pain will be no more! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    1. I sure hope so. Hard to believe today tho

  61. Hilary Sunderland says:

I have had both hips replaced and belong to the “why did I wait so long” camp. In my experience, the best thing to do is walk a little every day in the beginning and then just continue walking more. I did not do PT just walking and it changed my life. I walk 5 miles every day now and I’m 76.

  62. Good Morning Jennifer. At my age, I guess I’m lucky that I don’t know much about replacement parts. But have many friends who do. The only thing I understand from their experiences is that hip has a much easier recovery time than knee replacement. I’m sure he’ll fall easily into the category of wishing he’d done it sooner. RE: butter yellow. I only have my butter yellow sneakers from Vionic and I adore them. They’re suede and look great with jeans. But I am looking for an accent piece to go with. So look forward to more items you find. Wishing your husband great success today.

    1. Sneakers would be fun. I ordered a cardigan but should have started with a shoe. I hope the yellow is soft. Thank you

  63. I’ve had both hips and both knees replaced and, I must say, the hips were so much easier to recover from. Just have your husband do his therapy, take his pain meds as long as he needs them, and he’ll be fine. They’re have him up walking in the hospital the same day as the surgery or the next with a walker, and he may be released on day two. I have been so happy with my results, and I’m sure he will be, too. Best of luck!

    1. Thank you Niki! Your results sound amazing. They’ll be sending him home with me today…which is part of what my nervousness. 😳

      1. Yikes, no wonder you’re nervous!same-day hip surgery?!

  64. I don’t care for yellow at all never have. Sending healing thoughts to your husband.

    1. Me either but I’m going to lean into the buttery side of it and see if that changes. Thanks Shari

  65. Good morning, Jennifer. I bet butter yellow could work as a neutral in your wardrobe. It is such a soft, wearable color. I bought a soft yellow sleeveless shell from Talbots, and have worn it numerous times with a navy jacket and a blue sweater. it really does perk up my spring outfits. I hope your husband recovers quickly! My son had a hip replacement (ski injury), and he is pain free now. So worth it.

  66. I too love a soft butter yellow but stayed away as I am a rosy pink complexion kind of girl. Pale yellow and cornflower blue just make me happy!! Last year I was gifted a pair of butter yellow shorts that I paired with navy or medium blue, white and even a medium grey. I get my butter yellow fix while not washing myself out. Win win 😊

  67. I had my right hip replaced in 2023. I had surgery at 7:30am and was home sitting in my recliner at 2:00pm. I was able to drive in 2.5 weeks. Getting up and walking frequently is very important. My best suggestion is to use the Ice Buddy. It is a huge help for pain. Using this, I took 1/2 a pain pill at night the first 3 nights and no more after that! A suggestion from a nurse was to fill water bottles and freeze them to use in the Ice Buddy rather than using ice cubes. You can keep 2-3 frozen and use 2-3 and just change them out when needed. If your hospital doesn’t send an Ice Buddy home with you, here’s the Amazon one. https://www.amazon.com/Therapy-Machine-Shoulder-Cryotherapy-Universal/dp/B0CT8GF8MC?th=1

    1. We ordered it! I hope it arrives quickly

  68. Best of wishes to your husband for a speedy recovery from his hip replacement. While my husband and I still have all our original parts (LOL!), being in our early seventies we know plenty of people who have had replacement surgeries. Almost every one of them lamented that they didn’t do it sooner. Hopefully it will be the same sentiment for your husband!

  69. I had both my hips replaced in 2010 (I was 47 at the time).
The first one I moved my bedroom to the main level, I took 8 weeks off work. Rehab went very well. The second one (5 months later around Christmas) went even better. I slept downstairs for a week to 10 days and then began going upstairs. Work was slow at that time of year and I was gone for only 2 weeks.
I am so thankful that I can walk without pain. AMAZING.
    Good luck.

  70. Hello, My thoughts will be with your husband for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery. I, too, have heard it’s very easy.

  71. As one who has been color typed as a Summer, pale yellow is one of my recommended colors. I bought a butter yellow top a few years ago and get compliments each time I wear it. Who knew?!

A question for you, ladies. Last week I had my usual demi-permanent color appointment with blonde highlights to cover grey. My longtime stylist accidentally mixed up the wrong color recipe from what she uses to keep my deep blonde hair that color (ack!). It is now a rather dark reddish brown. (The warm tone fights with my wardrobe and usual makeup colors. I’m very fair). She plans to put ash blonde (cool) highlights on it this week. Do you think that is a good idea?

Good luck to your husband today, Jennifer! I hope he’ll do as well as mine who has returned to his mountain hiking and racquetball hobbies.

    1. From my limited knowledge, she will need to strip the red then tone to ash…but I’m not a pro. Ladies? Any ideas?

  72. Good morning Jennifer!

Thank you for such a great fashion blog. I look forward to opening it each time it arrives in my emails.

I have bilateral hip and knee replacements. Hips were both posterior which is harder to come back from as muscles, etc are cut. I was in PT for quite awhile and still struggle with stairs a bit. I have several friends who have had anterior replacements who recovered very quickly. My best advice is: have your husband do his exercises religiously! A big help is a tool which your OT will have: it’s a “grabber” which makes dressing so much easier.

Hang in there! It looks worse than it is! He’ll be like new in no time!

    1. We have a grabber and a long hook! They’re so helpful.

      1. Jennifer – I recently had a pickleball accident in Mexico and required a hip replacement. Made me realize the importance of good health insurance and to always have a plan. Luckily had a great surgeon and the recovery was great. Had biweekly visits from a Physio for 6 weeks and then worked with a trainer each week 1x in a pool and 1x in a gym. Now 4 months later I am back home and probably in better shape than ever.

      2. Ouch! Glad you’re all healed

  73. Best wishes for you and your husband…..love the save or splurge. Yes I love color and I do like yellow but it doesn’t like me as well……it’s hard to find a vibrant yellow that I can handle…..my muse lol.

    1. I’m hoping soft yellow will work for me

  74. I had both hips replaced and it is a God-send surgery! Keep up with the physical therapy and stay ahead of the pain w/ your meds. You won’t need them for very long. I had the jiffy hip surgery and the recovery is pretty quick compared to the one where they cut into the muscle. Even with that one I think your recovery time isn’t bad. Your husband will be amazed at how he feels!

    1. He had one where they didn’t cut his muscles too so hopefully he will recover quickly.

  75. Best wishes for your husband’s surgery. My dad had a hip replacement at 84. They had him up walking the next day and I’m sure your husband is in better shape than my dad was.
The blue sweater was the giveaway for me, but other than that, I would not have been able to tell. I’m looking forward to wearing my white jeans and blue sweater – hopefully soon.

  76. Jennifer, I have had both my hips replaced. The main thing is that your husband’s pain will be gone. It’s important that he do all of the required exercises and be mindful of his movements. Also, make sure that he has a reacher to pick up or grab things that he needs. Good luck— it will be good! Thank you for your posts. I love reading them. You are so prolific! Kathleen

I’ve been a lover of yellow for years! The caveat is that I don’t usually wear it, I paint with it My craft room/dressing room is a soft yellow with deep yellow curtains topped with yellow and red florals.

I’ll have to try these butter yellow sweaters. I’m a 66 yr old white blonde with pink skin undertones and green eyes. Maybe yellow will flatter me! I enjoy your posts!

  78. Suzanne Gabrielle says:

I’m thinking about getting one of the yellow sweaters that you’ve shown here. Many years ago I had a sweater the color of a banana (not the skin, but the banana LOL) and every time I wore it I got a compliment. If I could find THAT shade again, I’d buy it. But those blue sweaters you’re featuring today are really gorgeous and calling to me. So glad you had time with your old friends. How special.

  79. I do not own a single piece of yellow clothing nor do I own anything orange or green, although I used to own a pistachio colored jacket and loved it. These colors are not typically in my comfort zone. I’m definitely a more neutral and navy gal. I guessed on the splurge outfit from the purse. I love how you can price these looks for less.
Wishing your husband all the best with his surgery today.

    1. I love the save or splurges too!

  80. Paula Presbrey says:

First of all – sending good vibes for your husband’s surgery! I am 1 week post surgery for my 2 nd hip replacement – this one was scheduled – the first one was from a fall and break. Words of wisdom ….. stay ahead of the pain with the meds provided ( I only need Tylenol 1-2 times a day now) – let yourself sleep when your body tells you it’s needed – walk hourly even if it’s just to the bathroom or into another room. I am celebrating small victories every day and I am sure he will also!
For today’s color – I especially love pairing butter yellow with either lilac or navy ! I am so looking forward to being healthy and stylish once my skewering goes down !

    1. That’s so encouraging. I’m so glad you’re healing this fast. Best of luck for continued healing Paula.

  81. Jennifer-
I’ll have you and your husband in my thoughts and prayers today. My brother-in-law has had his hip replaced and is doing wonderfully! He was back to golfing 3X per week. The key was doing the therapy and walking! He walked A LOT after the physical therapy.

    1. That’s amazing! Thanks Ann
