Wearable Fall Shoe Trends For Women Over 50

Each fall, we get some new directions in footwear that can keep our outfits feeling fresh and up-to-date. At this stage in my life, it’s important that I find a shoe that not only looks good but is comfortable. I won’t spend time suffering in pain for any shoe, so comfort and support are a must. Here are some wearable fall shoe trends for women over 50 that offer comfort and great style.

#1. Chunky Loafers

Loafers are a perennial classic any time of year. The chunkier versions continue to be a popular trend for fall 2023. I like the visual balance they provide with the straight-leg and wider-leg pants that are also popular this year. They’re a great option for every day with jeans or trousers, and they dress up easily depending on the leather. There are also a lot of options available in the “comfort” category with this chunky loafer, which is good news for those of us with tricky feet.

#2. Pointed Toe Flats and Mary Janes

NATURALIZER MARY JANE FLAT

This is a great style for everyday wear, and the comfort options are plentiful. The straps on the Mary Janes make them easier to wear than a ballet flat because they stay on without having to grip your toes. These work with almost any outfit or occasion, from daily denim styles to work and evening wear.

#3. Clogs

Clogs are another trending shoe that is easier on the feet. I began wearing them in the 70s and the same brands are still popular today. Dansko is one of my favorite brands. I added these Sassy cutout clogs to my wardrobe for fall and love the height boost I get, along with stability because of the enclosed heel and buckled strap. Clogs also come in boots this year so you can wear them with socks in the colder weather.

#4. Metallics

FRANCO SARTO FLAT

Metallics are a big trend for fall and hugely popular in all footwear, belts and bags. I’m partial to metallic sneakers which add some fun oomph to casual looks. Opt for warm or cool tones which will coordinate with everything in your wardrobe.

#5. Western Style Boots

STEADY WESTERN BOOTIE

Western or Cowboy boots have always been in style. This fall there are lots of options with either subtle or over the top detailing. Tuck them under a bootcut jean or show them off with tights and a casual skirt.

#6. Soccer Sneakers

J CREW FIELD SNEAKERS

The fashion sneaker trend is still very popular, and this fall, we’re seeing a sportier take on that with soccer-style sneakers. I haven’t embraced this type of sneaker with skirts or dresses, but I am seeing it done more and more.

#7. Skinny/Kitten Heels

I know a lot of my readers have given up heels altogether, but a kitten heel may be a comfortable option to try this fall. I see them in shoes, booties, and tall boots. The feminine kitten shape adds a bit of height, looks great with a dress, skirt, or pants, and feels similar to a flat.

  1. Love my Dansko’s! I have sort of wide feet – but really wide enough to need wide width shoes. So many shoes over the years I couldn’t wear. When I hit my late-50’s I needed to stop wearing the low heels I could wear. I was so discouraged by what was out there – orthopedic Grammy shoes- eeekkkk!!! Several brands that you have shown are ones that I also wear. Stylish yet functional for this late-60’s gal.

  2. I love my crocs and tennies.

  3. I wear size 8.5 AAAAA, and Iā€™m lucky to find AAAAANY shoe that fits me. Suggestions?

    1. That is really a challenge! I would try Zappos and type the size into the search bar

  4. Omgosh…thought it was just me!

  5. Love all these cool shoes and boots.
I am such a shoe horse.
    Great post. thank you šŸ˜Š

  6. Due to having back issues; now only wear flats, low stable heel or wedge footwear that vary in style in accordance to occasion plus time of year. That being said though; if I had my way I would go barefoot …. ā˜ŗ. -Brenda-

    1. I’m with you on barefoot!

    2. I an with you, Brenda! Same situation and i feel the same, except i cannot go barefoot anymore. You rock it as long as you can.

    3. Wendy Jill Wiederman says:

Good morning, I have extremely swollen calves and feet due to health issues and need shoes/boots for Wide maybe even Extra Wide! Any recommendations anyone? Thank you everyone! These boots and shoes are all adorable!

      1. I would check on Zappos. I know they carry lots of extended sizes.

    1. Me too, they’re feminine and pretty.

  7. I’m sorry, most of these styles are ugly. IMO. What’s with the clunky Frankenstein loafers these days? I don’t get it.

  8. Most of the shoes I love, if I’m not in tennis shoes, I’m in loafers. I like the chunky look, but on my feet ouch, makes my size 8’s look like 15’s….I might have to skip this style and stay more streamlined. I do love ankle boots, so that’ll be fall/winter wear, and I will wear my Cole Haan ancient woven loafers with a tassel, I thought when I purchased them years ago I was spending too much, but these are my go to…so comfy…….happy shoe shopping!!

  9. Itā€™s been my experience that in general pointed shoes are not good for the feet. In time, hello bunions.

    1. Theyā€™re hard for me to wear because I have rather square feetšŸ¤£

    2. Exactly! I wore pointed heels when I was young, no bunions, but my feet really changed, for the the worse.

  10. You covered just about every shoe out there! I love so many of these. Lately I’ve had some foot problems. I just recovered from a partially dislocated toe to now a bone bruise on my heel. In the meantime I’m kind of stuck with sturdy looking tennis shoes. It’s a bummer because I love shoes. My Podiatrist recommended Ecco for dress shoes.

    1. Ouch, I’m sorry to hear that. I do love Ecco shoes so I’l have to try the dress verisons.

  11. Well, well. autocorrect did some weird things to my first comment today. The last part of the post should have a period after Cate Blancett and a new sentence reading, “Thanks for some great shoe suggestions. Tech….aaaggghhh!

    1. LOL, auto correct gets me every time!

  12. Oh my Jennifer! You look so elegant in your first photo. Your cheekbones look chiseled. Everything about the photo is giving off movie star vibes ala Cate Blanchett for some great shoe suggestions.

    1. You’re so sweet, thanks Kathy.

  13. I love all the fall shoes but am I the only one who is confused on the choice of socks?! I live in the Midwest and my ankles get cold!!!

    1. You are not alone about the socks. I like to match mine to my pants.

    2. This bare ankle look has been going on for too long now. You don’t know cold until you’ve faced an eternal Wisconsin winter. I resort to midweight, wool socks. Shoes have to be wide enough to accommodate the socks. I match the socks to my jeans. The jeans have to be long enough to hide the socks. Fashionable? No. It’s either that or freeze my toes off!

  14. No heels of any kind. I love Dansko sandals and loafers, but I cannot wear the clogs. My sister loves them.

  15. While i love the looks of a kitten heel – I have found them to be a bit unstable and and always seem to roll my foot! I had one pair when I was in my 30’s and about twisted my ankle several times – and that was it for me :). ANyway, love the ankle boots and loafers!
