Weekend Reading 05.17.25

Happy weekend, ladies. Thanks for sharing your resources and experiences with African safaris yesterday. I’m convinced now is the time for us to have this adventure, and I can not wait to go!

PACKABLE SUNHAT / NECKLACE / EYEGLASSES / STRIPED TOP / SIMILAR EARRINGS

I did something totally out of character yesterday. If you know how neurotic I am about my hair, you’ll understand just how out of character it really was. I was at the local shopping center, minding my own business (well, returning an Amazon order), when I wandered past an Aveda salon. My stylist retired earlier this year, and I was getting desperate to replace her. On a whim, and I mean a true, no-appointment, no-research kind of whim, I walked in and asked if anyone there was good with baby fine, thin hair. They rattled off a few names, and as luck would have it, one of them had a cancellation in 15 minutes. Bingo. I said yes and proceeded to let a total stranger put scissors in my hair. I won’t have a clue how it turned out until I try to style it myself…fingers crossed.

  1. I feel your pain on finding a new stylist. I go to a barber and this Friday will be my last appointment before she retires! Aaargh! She did not ask my opinion, but she is closing in on 70, so I suppose she’s due. I’m going to give the guy who is buying the shop a chance. He cuts my husband’s hair, so maybe?

  2. You are very brave to get a new stylist like you did. You may have found the One. I had to do a similar thing after the pandemic when my stylist didn’t come back to work. I like my new one very much. When I call I asked for someone who could work with baby fine, thin wavy hair and she has taken me from long hair to a Bob to a longer pixie, more a short style than a true short pixie. It is so much easier for my severely arthritic hands to work with. A true wash and wear style. I can’t wait to see your hair when you style it.

  3. You are rocking that hat! It’s adorable and very flattering on you. I may need to purchase one😁

  4. You look SOOOO good in hats! This latest is darling. what Kevin Murphy products do you recommend? I too have baby fine, board straight, thinning hair…it’s a real challenge, isn’t it? Fingers crossed for your hair!
Thx for the helpful sale lists.

    1. I really love their mousse, and session spray. The Doover is great for adding volume. I love everything I’ve tried from Kevin Murphy so I don’t think you can go wrong.

  5. Wow you are brave but your hair looks great under your hat! I bet you will love it.

    1. It’s very plain, but no damage was done so I consider that a win!

  6. Cindy Beck says:

Oh, you are so brave with your new haircut. But it sounds like something I would do as well when I become so frustrated with my also baby fine and very thin hair. Can’t wait to see how it works for you. Thanks for always having an interesting blog.

    1. It’s really out of character for me because my hair is so thin, a few bad snips can be disastrous.

  7. I love the haircut on a whim! I’ve done that and now have a great place for a haircut! Overthinking usually gets me in trouble.

    1. I never thought of it that way but you’re right! I was so clear about what I wanted and that made him very careful. I may have just found my new stylist!

  8. Darlene Bright says:

I love that hat! I hope you like your haircut. I have baby fine, thin ,curly hair and I have gone to the same stylist for over 40 years. I would never be brave enough to just let anyone cut it.

    1. It’s scary when they retire! I looked for weeks then it extended to months and I was desperate. I contemplated trying to trim the back myself but luckily knew that would not go well. It’s such a great hat. It can be styled in so many shapes.

  9. Good morning, Jennifer! I am a new subscriber as of last night! I also follow Kay Harms and Tania Stephens. I read that you are my height and about the same weight so I think that will be good to see how clothes might look on me. Also you mentioned you have baby fine hair, and I do too! Anxious to see your new ‘do!

    1. Welcome Lana, Tania and Kay are both so beautifully tall! Being on the border of petite can be a challenge. I’m so glad you’ve joined us here.

  10. I can’t wait to see how your hair turned out. It sounds like it was meant to be.

    1. Fingers crossed 😉. Even though it’s clean I’m going to wash it myself this am and play with it a bit.

  11. Oh, I did a similar thing a few years ago but also got color. NOOOO…the “natural” Aveda color products were very harsh on my fine thin hair. Good thing you don’t color! Looking forward to seeing your cut!

    1. They do make nice hair products but I’m pretty sold on the Kevin Murphy line.
