I’ve had a version of this jacket in my closet since the ‘70s, but I’ve moved on from the stiff, boxy silhouettes of the past. These days, I’m not trying to look “cool”. I’m just trying to look like myself. I want to feel pulled together and comfortable, and, most importantly, look modern.

Love denim jackets! I need to shop for a new white one, my current Eddie Bauer one is stiff even though it has some stretch in it and I have washed the heck out of it. Love the look of the Liverpool peplum, apparently it’s not offered in white currently.
I was raised in the west and a denim jacket (or three) is always in my closet. I have to watch myself, however, and balance the jeans and the jacket for color, style, etc. I even wore an all denim shirt jacket and wrap around skirt on casual Fridays in the 1990’s. With leather trim! In DC. Downtown. Dressing up for a cowboy concert is not difficult for me. Yes, I have a Stetson, but not cannot find a boot to fit. Ever. Ideas?? My favorite jean jackets were thrifted — a Dana Bachman, 3/4 sleeves, $6; a longer fuller one with wide colorful embroidery on both sides of the front that gets complements from young adults 20-40, $5; and a shorter, lighter weight, lighter blue jacket with darker blue leopard spots — just for fun, purchased at an “over ??” clothing store for women on sale, because leopard print denim? I would buy a fourth denim jacket if I found one I liked.

Yes, to denim for a mostly casual, yet flexible look. I live in the desert, which makes it a nice alternative to a cardigan, and it is easy to wear comfortably in the often fluctuating daily range of temperatures. You look great in all of these photos. I have never found a jean jacket that I like the feel or look of on me. I do own a blue one that hangs in my closet and a white one that I wear occasionally. I can’t decide if they make me look younger or older.

Nay, noppety-nope on denim jackets! I have bought many in my life, and none were worn. Denim is too coarse, and the stitching leans rustic, which is not my best look. Give me a cropped fitted jacket with rounded edges in a smooth fabric!
My latest jean jacket is Caramel corduroy from Macy’s. It has the inside pockets that are great for a cell phone. I wear jackets year ’round because of the chill in churches and restaurants even here in Florida. I gave away my ill-fitting black jean jacket; getting away from black in my 80’s. Love my Jean jackets. It is my go to 3rd layer when outside weather doesn’t require a warmth or rain protection. Especially great for travel as it has interior pockets to keep travel docs, ID, or phone within easy reach. Agree on some stretch and comfort goes along way. Don’t wear my white one near as often, but it has finished many an outfit and kept me warm when the air conditioning is too much for my comfort. Great post and good to know many others feel the same about their jean jackets.

Because they are so versatile, I may have too many jean jackets! Different washes/colors, different lengths, even a peplum version. Many are Talbots because I look first for petite sizes. One that I have bought multiple times that is not petite is a frayed linen version from Tommy Bahama. So soft and just the right weight for summer. Comes in 6 colors, I have the navy, white, and beige.
I don’t travel to warm weather destinations without my denim jean jacket. Ask my girlfriends who I travel with often. I have been known to show up in pajamas in the morning wearing it as the sun rises in Hawaii!
It is kind of a joke with my husband, too.
Why change something that works and is so versatile.

At 80 I still love my jean jackets. I have a traditional one, 2 red ones, a bright pink, white with a frayed hem, and a black velvet one. And you never know if I might find another one. Lol!!

It’s kind of a nay in denim for me, yet the traditional cut is a good one on my frame. Unless it’s dark white, or black, the traditional denim washes me out, and they just aren’t that comfortable. They also read suburban mom to me and a bit dated, esp over dresses. I do have a few in linen from Tommy Bahama that I love. I have a longer utility style that reads more updated in my mind. I’ve moved my traditional jean jackets to the second closet. I usually grab a blazer, utility jacket or cardi instead.

seems i’m the outlier as I’m in the nay group, they just never seemed to work for me. I may try one in the peplem style. I always want a jean jacket to work for me but the jean jacket never does and i always take it back off, in fact i donated the one I had as it never seemed to work for me. Will try and play with different silhouettes and see if that works, but I like other things on me so not going to go too far down the rabbit hole!!
That’s wise! The casual nature of the jacket just may not be for you. Different silhouettes, button an stitching color can change the whole vibe.

Great post about a great piece. It’s getting cold in the Pacific Northwest so wearing a warm coat over the jacket is practical and cool. Think Elaine bennis on Seinfeld, black denim jacket, long, warm coat over the top of everything.

I love denim shirts and have a few. I try to find the softer versions so they don’t feel stiff. Chambray is an even better option, IMHO 😉
I can’t remember a time I didn’t own a denim jacket, and I’ve only had two! I believe both are from GAP. My current is a medium wash. One thing I won’t wear it with is jeans that are blue — can’t do the Texas tuxedo! (That’s what we called it in high school in Vancouver, BC.) I wore it yesterday with a navy wool sweater and light olive barrel jeans to meet my brother and SIL for breakfast. And definitely always take it when traveling!

Yay to jean jackets. I’m not particularly a denim girl, but I do have a number of jean jackets. I mainly wear denim on denim, but I love your ideas here for trying something different. I’m thinking with my blue denim jackets as you’re showing, but I also have jean jackets in pink, lavender, red and green! I don’t really reach for them, I don’t know why. Maybe because I don’t (or didn’t until your post!) know how to style them. Now I’m more motivated to wear them! I do need a try-on session as you suggest, because I’m sure some of them can go!
I love my denim jackets and wear them all the time when weather permits. Have several in blue denim and several in lots of colors, plus black and white. Last one I bought was the one you show above, Kut From the Cloth with the slightly frayed no bottom band. It’s now my favorite! I bought it when you shared it earlier and last wore it 2 weeks ago with the black eyelet skirt you showed a few weeks ago. It’s so comfortable and moves easily with you.

I too have a love/hate relationship with Jean jackets. Never seems right on me or it doesn’t feel like me. I think I’d like one that’s really soft. Maybe that means not 100% cotton? One of my fav outfits on you was black jeans (might have been pants) white shirt worn out with shorter Jean jacket. I loved that look.

Love my denim jackets although it will be getting too hot very soon to wear them. I have a white from Talbots and medium denim from H&M. I just ordered short sleeve from Talbots in both colors to try. The Chico’s stripe jacket that you showed in the thumbnails is calling my name.
How do you feel about colored denim? I know in the past you’ve worn a short-sleeved version from Talbots. I am really not sure about these — have you seen anyone under 50 wearing one? Also, I just like sleeves in jackets …
I’m not seeing younger women wearing colored denim these days. I do see lots of colored denim jackets in the stores which look wearable.
I live in my jean jackets.. I have one that still looks great and it’s about 25years old…getting my money’s worth with that one..I have another frequently used jacket that’s a bit oversized but makes me feel great. I haven’t had time to comment on your other posts, but last weeks posts were terrific!
I last wore my white lightweight denim jacket with white jeans and a pink and white striped tee to a doctors appointment. It looked crisp and very spring. I’m 80 and still wear my dark wash denim jacket and my white when I need just a little more warmth on a chilly day. I tend to wear the dark wash with my medium wash trouser style jeans from Chicos.
I’m 73 and wear my denim jacket everywhere! It’s just such a versatile piece.

Fun Fact – I still have my mom’s denim jacket (Levis dark wash) from the 60’s. Then it was more of utilitarian – I can still see her wearing it to haul in chunks of firewood. Safe to say – it wore like iron and still looks good today!

Like Bea, Jean jackets have never worked for me – a petite with large breasts. The top pockets and buttons emphasized what I didn’t want emphasized, and sleeves that always needed to be rolled back didn’t work, either as the bulk overwhelmed my shorter frame. Here is something I struggle with (and I don’t see you in them either) and I have a couple items in linen but over all I don’t gravitate to linen or linen blends. However I love 3/4 sleeve 100% cotton (not a cotton blend) button down shirt and something a little different then a oxford style and not the big puffy/balloon sleeve or all ruffles that is popular and I don’t want a “popover” and no stripes either……..have you had something in your head and want but can’t find???? hahahaha
You need to buy the styles you like when you see them because they may not always be available.

I guess I better get my jeans jacket out! I’ve had it for years but lately I seem to just be wearing little sport jackets. We used to wear the longer cardigans but I don’t see them out there so much anywhere. Heck we’re still wearing winter coats to walk here. I see a lot of zipper sweatshirts here.

Thank you for validating those of us who love denim jackets. I have one from Coldwater Creek that has some stretch, is a medium-dark wash and very classic looking. It works with just about everything casual. I just went on a 10 day trip to Utah and it’s the only jacket I brought. Great for layering under hoodies and tees. I have a white one also but the blue seems to get worn more often. I’ve looked for other styles of casual, spring weight jackets but to no avail and don’t care for the blazer look. I guess the denim is my staple.

I have a medium wash denim jacket that I bought about 15 years ago. It is a Croft and Barrow brand that I purchased at Kohls. At the time I thought it was quite expensive. I wore it to an art club meeting last night and I received several compliments on it. I should wear it more often.

My opinion in styling a sweater draped over the shoulders of a jean jacket is it’s way too bulky. It looks uncomfortable with fabric up to your ears. Maybe separate the two?

I love denim jackets. My original one is a med blue purchased from Landsend about 40 year’s ago. Is still in style and perfectly broken in 🥰. I since have acquired five more in various colors. Four are traditional style in white, pale pink, dark pink, medium blue all from Talbots and the last one you showed this spring from Talbots is the white collarless fringed style. Get compliments when ever I wear it . Plan to wear it today to lunch with blue patterned jeans, navy tee.
Always pack either the traditional denim blue or white when traveling, they go with everything.

I love a good jean jacket and have a few even though I know they’re not the best look on my body shape (wide hips, small on top), but oh well. I saw one in a pretty coral color recently and was so tempted… just might go back for it. A YouTuber I watch recently claimed denim jackets are now a much more relaxed fit… slouchy. So far I haven’t seen many like that.
I have a huge collection of denim jackets from Chicos. I still like embellishments and wear those also! I have gotten rid of some of them that are stiff and uncomfortable to wear. They are a great choice if you need a jacket and want to look casual.

Love my jean jackets! I am 79 and wear them alot. Wire my bright pink one with white wide leg jeans and a cute tee on Saturday. Got several compliments. Wore my cropped ( I am under 5 ft) red one yesterday with jeans and a white tee. More compliments. I do agree that the softer ones are alot better.

The cut of a jean jacket just looks good on me -single breasted, set in sleeves. (5’3” large bust, short waisted.) i think to be current they need to either be shorter (waist length) to go with dresses and wide pants, or longer like a “work wear” or barn jacket. I took a scissors to an old one and cut off the waistband (avoiding the pockets) and I love the result. I also love the Two Palms linen style from Tommy Bahama. I think both black and white jean jackets are also essential. Faded light denim is not flattering on me. Finally, I have a “lady jacket” style (it’s in black denim) that I just love.

Good morning, Jennifer. For years I have had a love hate relationship with denim jackets. I want to wear them, but since I have a larger bust, denim jackets oftentimes seem like they emphasize the part of my body I want to appear smaller (hugging the upper body, pockets & buttons on top of the bust, etc.). But I have found a solution for me. Jackets that mimic the jean jacket and are made of linen or a linen blend seem to flatter me more. This season JJill has such a jacket, and I have bought it in both coral and white. This jacket is versatile, and I feel as if I have won the jean jacket lottery when I wear it!
