Weekend Reading 06.21.25

After an iffy weather week, we’re in for a rainy, cold weekend…so we decided to head out for a short car trip. I miss the road trip adventures we used to take with our little trailer. Hitting the road was a blast…but in truth, it was getting more and more difficult to physically manage. Our trailer didn’t come with automatic leveling, etc, so we had to manually crank the trailer off and on the hitch, which was getting old.

SOFT WHITE STRETCH CROPS / SOFT WHITE TANK / SIMILAR BLACK SHIRT / STRAW BAG / PACKABLE HAT / EARRINGS / ANCIENT SANDALS (SIMILAR HERE)

I wore this soft white and black combination during the week and loved how it came together. The little tank top has back whip stitching, which tied nicely into the black blouse, and so I added black sandals. Along with my dark sunglasses, it created a color sandwich, which was easy to wear. Would nude sandals have made my legs look longer? You bet, but sometimes it’s more fun to just wear what you like.😉

On my radar:

If it ever stays consistently warm, I think this will be my summer wearing dresses. I don’t care that my legs are ghostly white…I’ll just wear a self-tanner (I bought this one at the local pharmacy). My leg veins are what they are, so anyone looking that closely is too close for comfort.

I’m finding more and more casual dresses that look incredibly comfy and are easy to just pop on and go. I ordered this customer favorite from J.Crew, and try as I might…I looked like I was an extra in Little House On The Prairie, so it went back.

Sales of note:

CHICO’S – $20 off your purchase of $100, $50 off your purchase of $200+. They’ve brought back their fabulous bungee cord dress this year in several fabulous colors. I do love the longer sleeves on this one, which would make it so great for travel…airplanes are like refrigerators the moment you take off. 🤣 This version has the bungee cord at the waist, which gives it a very different look. And in true Chicos form, they made it in a fun animal print here,

J.CREW: Up to 50% off almost everything.

J.CREW FACTORY: Up to 60% off everything + an extra 20% off when you spend $100 with code SUNNY.

NORDSTROM: Extra 25% off clearance. This Frank & Eileen capelet is marked down in the most gorgeous blue! These Tommy Bahama linen pants are also price-matched.

TALBOTS: 30% off tees, shorts, dresses, and more.

I have loved wearing my dresses this summer and want to continue wearing them but live in Michigan. What are plus petite and others wearing on their legs this Fall and Winter.

    1. I think tights are the best for fall

  2. Hi Jennifer,
Great post. Giggled at “ancient sandals,” “little house on the prairie,” and “airplanes like refrigerator’s.” Love your style sense and sense of humor. Thanks for what you do!!

  3. I’m still thinking about yesterday’s post, and I did break a style rule for me, I took a black (not my color) knit high neck sleeveless midi dress with a lace inset to Mexico recently. We had professional pictures with friends to celebrate, and I was very surprised at how it looked in pictures! Lovely! I see you have done that too. Something about the simplicitiy makes the beach scenery pop!
And I can certainly relate about the shorts issue. My mother wore shorts once in her life when we were sitting in 112 degree temperatures in Palm Springs enjoying hummingbirds in a fountain. I inherited the purple unsightly veins, too, so it’s a juggle to get some treatments, a self tanner and just put on the shorts and go out in our typical SW 100+ degree weather and be comfortable, hoping someone doesn’t ask what happened? lol I grew up in Seattle and spent lots of time on the islands & penninsula, nothing teaches you to layer like that, all summer long. We are going in August, to the beach and rainforest for a family reunion, and I know what to take. That might be the reason I still have an extensive sweater collection?

    1. Your dress sounds smashing. I agree about stark simplicity. It make a wonderful statement.

  4. I love your white and black sandwich outfit! It looks very smart! Go ahead and enjoy your cooler rainy weather. It is very hot and desert dry here. It is already 92 degrees and not 11am yet! We walked Trixy at 8:30am today and others were out as well. Remember I’m 80 but today I’m wearing white knit shorts with a white with navy dots flutter top and my grey Brooks walkers until back home then switched to a comfy pair of navy and camel boat shoes from Skechers. Of course while outside I wore my straw white fedora. Thank goodness for a breeze! You and the ladies here are my morning tea and often laughter. Enjoy your weekend Jennifer and ladies!

    1. Happy weekend Sydney!! Stay cool

  5. My mom stopped wearing shorts (always long pants even when playing golf) because she had sun damage. I kept telling her she had nice shaped legs (which she did and which I inherited, thank you, Mom), but she was so self conscious. I would tell her no one is looking at her sun damage (we all have it), but she wouldn’t believe me. She had such a great sense of style (which my daughter inherited, but it skipped me.) I so enjoy your posts and suggestions (as well as some other bloggers for seasoned women) to help me look and feel my best. My mom would have loved your posts.

  6. I am loving loose dresses this summer – so easy and comfortable, and I feel great wearing them. I recently purchased two of the Chico’s bungee cord dresses with the longer sleeves. They feel and look great – I love the style. Even though these dresses do not come in a petite length, I find they fit my 5’1” frame just fine. I’ve also purchased some dresses from J Jill and happened to stumble on a cute black denim dress at Target – every now and then I get lucky at Target!

    1. Long sleeve would be great with tights and booties in the winter too. They’re really fun dresses.

  7. I just finished reading the comments from yesterday…..it was a good post. When I put stripes on and don’t feel good, it’s because of some clothing label my mother dressed me in as a kid and I didn’t like…..lol.

Curious….when you say cold where you are now, what is the temperature?

    Have a good week end.

    1. Of course temperature is all relative, but it’s 55 and drizzly here.

      1. I would love that temperature at this moment….east coast and a heat wave right now.

  8. Yesterday’s post was great! So many great responses.

    1. I agree. This is a community of smart women!

  9. I just read yesterday’s post this morning and it resonated with me as it did with so many others yesterday. I had never heard the rule about not wearing jeans after 60 until I you mentioned it in a post a while back. At nearly 70 years old, they are a staple in my wardrobe. Actually our generation made them that way. The previous generation did not really were them. They were against the dress code at the high school I attended and the students actually hired a lawyer to fight and win the right to wear them to school.
All of the other “rules” you list are equally as ridiculous. Cover my arms? In 98 degrees? Forget it! I break all of them. I wear what I feel comfortable and confident in and will continue to do so as long as I live!

The Little House on the Prairie Dress comment cracked me up. I have dresses from the Modern Prairie website. The cotton is cool and comfortable.
