Weekend Reading 10.10.26
Happy weekend! We have lots of fun things planned this weekend, including a trip to the pumpkin patch with my littlest grandson and a get-together with our long-time dinner group.

It’s been in the high 90s all week, but since I don’t wear shorts, I’ve been relying on cotton gauze and cotton poplin. I’ve already packed away my linen, so these work perfectly.
Weekend Reading 10.10.26
Question of the week
My posts about leggings have always been some of the most popular on the blog, which has me wondering if you’re still wearing them as much as you used to. Are leggings still something you reach for during fall and winter, or have you moved on to other styles of pants? I’d love to hear what you’re wearing these days!
Bestsellers of the week – what readers loved most:
- Suede sneakers are everywhere this fall, and I love the softer look of these Rag & Bone Retro Sneakers. Many of you agreed and took advantage of the sale price.
- My little cabled cardigan was restocked in cool-toned brown, and you ladies loved it!
- These Talbots straight-leg jeans were a best seller a few weeks ago and are back on many readers’ radar this week.
- I always enjoy seeing what you all find during Amazon’s big sales. The top three best sellers from Prime Big Deal Days were this Oversized Knit Cardigan, the Mavoro Compact Magnifying Mirror, and the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Charcoal.
- The holiday collections are arriving, and many of you are getting in the spirit early. This Chico’s Sequin Embellished Pullover Sweater was very popular this week and is currently 25% off.
- The Tata Harper Superkind Calming Crème was another reader favorite this week. I love how soothing it feels on my skin.
- Comfortable pants are always popular with readers, and these BIBI Classic Navy Triple Terry Sweatpants were a favorite this week. I love the navy color, and they look like a cozy option for relaxing at home, running errands, or casual fall weekends.
- Speaking of holidays, this simple doormat is on its way to many readers.
On my radar:
- Frank & Eileen just released a new washed velvet shirt with my name all over it! It comes in a pretty gold or the prettiest navy! This sweatshirt tee is a fun shape too.
- You know how much I love my Margaux Phoebe flats, so I was excited to see that they now make a boot version. Sizes are already selling out quickly, and I wanted to share them before they’re gone.
- I’ve also been looking at some of Adidas’s fun sneakers this season. Their collections include animal prints and metallic finishes, which are a nice way to add a little interest to an otherwise simple outfit.
- I’m starting to keep an eye out for holiday gifts, and this cashmere scarf caught my attention. It comes in quite a few colors and costs less than $40. I also spotted this NEST New York 5-Piece Votive Candle Set at Nordstrom Rack. NEST makes wonderful candles.
- Ruggable has introduced its first wool rug collection, and I love that they’ve made it easier to care for. Wool naturally helps repel spills, feels soft underfoot, and adds wonderful texture to a room. The Tropez Brown Wool Rug is a lovely neutral, while the Lucien Slate Blue Wool Rug adds a pretty touch of color and pattern.
- Now’s a nice time to update a few photos around your home before the holidays, and this pretty picture frame caught my eye. I also love this portable charcuterie board with a lid for entertaining. You can prep it ahead of time and bring it along when you visit friends or family.
Highlights from the weekend sales:
- Talbots is offering an extra 50% off when you buy two or more sale styles or an extra 40% off one. They also have some Fall Feels Deals worth checking out.
- Wool and Cashmere Triangle Scarf – I love the rich Dark Hibiscus color for fall, and triangle scarves are such an easy way to add a little interest to a simple sweater or jacket.
- Twill Utility Jacket – I recently shared my thoughts on utility jackets, and this one in Dark Umber is a great option. It’s a versatile layer that would look lovely with jeans or casual trousers.
- Pointelle Charming Cardigan – This soft brown leopard print caught my eye. It’s a nice way to add a little pattern to your fall wardrobe, and I’d pair it with chocolate brown trousers or jeans.
- Chico’s has 25% off full-price styles and an extra 50% off markdowns.
- I surprised myself by coming home with this green print sweater that’s on sale. It reminds me of animal print with its blend of soft colors.
More Chico’s That Caught My Eye:
- Lands’ End is offering 50% off sitewide plus an extra 65% off sale and clearance with code HAYRIDE. I always find their sales worth browsing for comfortable, well-made basics, and these three pieces caught my eye.
- Drifter Ribbed Collared Blazer Sweater – I’m a big fan of sweater blazers, and I like the texture and relaxed structure of this one. It’s the sort of layer I’d throw on over a tee when a regular blazer feels too dressy.
- Sport Knit High Rise Pants – These have been a Lands’ End favorite for years, and I can see why. Sometimes you just want a comfortable pair of pants with an elastic waist that aren’t leggings or sweatpants.
- High Rise Straight Leg Jeans – I appreciate a classic straight-leg jean that doesn’t try too hard to follow every denim trend. These look like a good everyday option to wear with sweaters, jackets, and boots this fall.

A little weekend inspiration:
If you’re looking forward to slowing down a bit this weekend, I’ve got a few posts you might enjoy. My hobbies for women over 50 has ideas for trying something new, and I’ve also shared ways to get a better night’s sleep, which is something many of us could use. If you’re in the mood to dream about your next adventure, these bucket list trips for women over 60 might inspire a little travel planning.
Have a great weekend!

At 73, I still love pima cotton leggings and long tunics for at home wear during warm weather and early spring/fall weather. Comfy for working out, walking, housework, gardening, lounging, or running casual errands, too!
I don’t wear leggings often but they seemed like the perfect thing today with an oversized Ohio State tee to watch the game with my husband and son.. I don’t wear them when I’m going out though!
Not buying any more leggings. I have one pair left for exercise and now wear Athleta Salutation joggers or Venice wide leg pants for exercise and/or days when I don’t want to wear jeans. I used to wear leggings almost every day and now have no interest. It’s funny how a popular style like leggings or capri pants can be your everyday thing and then they just look dated to you and not current any longer.
I have never worn leggings and I never will! With my body type (large chest and short height), leggings make me look like a lollipop. I look so much better in pants with a boot cut or slightly flared leg. That volume on the bottom seems to balance the heavier top. I wear Ponte pants most of the time – so comfortable!
I just bought a grey plaid shirt and heather grey Starfish pants. Sounds weekend comfort to me. Have a great weekend!
I liked the look of leggings & a tunic but I never liked them for me. I was so self conscious of every lump & bump showing. Plus, having long legs it was hard to find any long enough. I also didn’t find them warm at all.
Jennifer, could you do a post on styling sweatpants/lounge wear to wear outside the home? I have some but haven’t come up with a formula I’m comfortable with.
Always enjoy your book suggestions, as I am a retired Librarian. Strout and Kingsolver are among my favorite authors! Just finished Keeper of happy endings and LOVED it!
I donated my leggings but kept two jeggings that are more like a ponte pant.
I used to wear leggings awhile back when they were popular with long tops and sweaters. Now I just wear them to the gym and maybe after for a few errands. I still see everyone wearing them around here with sweatshirts and white socks and sneakers. Yeah I’m not a fan.
I seldom wore leggings even when they were trending. I wear Pilate pants to work out, then change into straight leg jeans, either full length or cropped.
Thanks Joanna
I hate leggings. I hate anything tight and I think they look so dated unless you’re a college girl in Lulu. Leg day at the gym only for me!
Lol!
I love those cotton poplin pants on you, so I clicked on the link. Oh my, you look so much better in them than the model. The models all look quite fat in them; one even looks pregnant.
I used to live in leggings with tunic tops. Now it’s hard to find attractive tunic tops that cover your rear end. When I see women my age out and about with waist-length tops and leggings, I wonder if they’ve seen themselves from the back. We all need a 3-way mirror! Wish I could find one that I could install at home.
Three way mirrors are the best! I agree.
I also love the Frank + Eileen triple terry pieces. But for a considerably lower price vs the short sleeve tee you mentioned this week, check out the short sleeve version of the Ziggy tee from Perfect White Tee (perfectwhitetee.com). The fleece is on the outside, but just as comfy. Comes in all kinds of versions (long sleeve, crew neck, v-neck and lots of colors.) I bought the short sleeve in red for the summer, wore it a lot.
I think a big difference is in the cut of the tee and this one is made in the US so I know the worker was paid a fair wage.
I live in leggings. And tunics that hit above the knee or mid thigh. Leggings move with me with no restriction, are easy to get on and off, and offer a simple solution to dressing. I like the timeless aesthetic of the tunic with them. Long vests, scarves, and changeable footwear change it all up. I am an active 85, 126#’s and simplifying where I can. This is my go to uniform. I am fortunate that I can pull it off fashion wise.
Good Morning Jennifer, here in Colorado, we’ve been in the high 80’s this week, and I agree, I’m really wanting to wear my old and new Fall sweaters and zip up hoodies. The ultra soft hoodies from Quince are wonderful and I bought three colors last Spring. Our forecast also calls for temps in the 60’s next week. Bring it on. I’ve never worn leggings except to work out. I just don’t think they’re all that comfortable and they’re very hard to put on and take off. I don’t like them unless I’m on the reformer. I’ll take a soft pair of denim any day. I put on a pair of my Spanx denim jeggings the other day. Hadn’t worn them for years. They felt so restrictive, they came right off and headed right for the donation bin.
It’s finally cooling off here today and I’m thrilled.
Leggings? Yes but only for exercise. Not as pants for going out and about. So I don’t really need fashion tips on how to wear them at my age!
Am I the only one upset with Chico’s for charging shipping now for members of “Club Chico’s”? I love that embellished sweater but I don’t know if I want to pay shipping when I used to get it for free. It’s the principle of it.
I think brands are all struggling in this economy.
I tend to wear leggings a lot around the house in the winter. But I have so many nice pairs of jeans and corduroy pants so why am I saving those only for going out? I want to enjoy and wear them more even when I’m staying in this winter.
I’m trying to not save anything for later. Today is the most important day!
I wear workout leggings almost daily as soon as the weather cools. I like to workout in the morning, so I get up, get dressed in workout clothes, then walk the dog, then my workout (yoga, weights, etc.) And when I take care of our grandchildren, it is leggings.
Thank you for the books you recommended. I added a few to my Libby waitlist.
I used to wear leggings 5 days out of the week but since they aren’t as fashion popular I have stepped aside sadly. I still love a good legging and a soft cozy tunic. This fall and winter I will still wear them occasionally.
Thanks Judy
Definitely moved on from leggings I much prefer travel or yoga pants for downtime and the selection of these is getting better all the time.
