The Jean Style Every Woman Over 60 Should Own

There’s no shortage of advice about the jeans every woman over 60 should be wearing. Most of it feels suspiciously written by someone who hasn’t wrestled with a dressing room mirror lately or tried to sit down after lunch.

I loved my skinny jeans once. Truly. But somewhere along the way, denim that required a deep breath, a prayer, and a calf tug lost its charm. These days, I want jeans that feel like denim, not a second skin applied with industrial strength adhesive.

That’s why straight-leg jeans have quietly become my go-to. They’re timeless, flattering, and blessedly free of drama. When you find the right pair, they just work. No fussing. No adjusting. No wondering if you can bend over without consequences.

If there’s one jean style every woman over 60 should own, this is it. Let’s talk about why.

What Are Straight Leg Jeans?

Straight leg jeans do exactly what their name suggests: they fall straight down from the hip to the ankle. They’re looser than a skinny but not sloppy. They are usually fitted through the hips and give nice room in the thigh area. That straight line creates a balanced silhouette that flatters nearly every body type.

Choosing the Right Fit

Fit is everything, especially with straight leg jeans. Because they’re not meant to cling, it’s important to find a pair that follows your shape without squeezing. Here are a few things I look for when I’m shopping for straight leg denim:

  • Waist height: I gravitate toward mid to high-rise jeans because they give a smoother line under tops and feel more secure. Low-rise options are out there, but they don’t do our midsections any favors. Mid-rise also works well for those with a shorter torso.
  • Fabric: A little bit of stretch can go a long way. I like jeans with about 1–2% elastane or spandex so they move with me, but not so much that they lose their shape.
  • Length: This is a big one. The most flattering straight leg jeans either skim the top of your foot or hit just above the ankle. Anything longer tends to puddle, and anything too short can look awkward unless you’re wearing a cropped style on purpose.

If you’re petite, look for brands that offer shorter inseams so you don’t have to rely on tailoring. I often choose ankle-length styles because they work with a variety of shoes and are especially flattering with loafers or low boots.

What Shoes to Wear with Straight Leg Jeans

Straight leg jeans work with more shoes than you might expect. Here are a few that I wear regularly:

  • Loafers: A classic pairing that’s ideal for everyday wear.
  • Ankle boots: Choose a pair that fits closely around the ankle or tucks neatly under the hem.
  • Sneakers: Clean, low-profile styles look best.
  • Flats: Ballet flats and pointed-toe styles work beautifully and give a slightly dressier feel.
  • Heels: If your jeans are long enough, a block heel or kitten heel adds a little lift without sacrificing comfort.

CLASSIC STRAIGHT JEANS / ZIPPERED TOTE BAG

My current favorite straight-leg jeans are these Eileen Fisher straights, which fit like a dream. They come in 3 washes and have enough stretch for comfort but do not bag out at the knees…I hate when that happens.

The FRAME Le Sleek jeans are precisely what the name suggests… sleek, polished, and super chic. They have a slim, straight leg that gives a streamlined look while still feeling comfortable. The fabric has just the right amount of stretch to move with you while holding its shape, so they look just as good at the end of the day as they do when you put them on. With a clean design and a versatile medium-wash, I find them super easy to dress up or down!

Another great straight-leg option is these NYDJ Marilyn jeans. They come in four blue washes, and I’m wearing the Quinn. They come in regular, petite, and tall sizes 00-18. I’m wearing the 6 petite, and they’re plenty long with an inseam of 29 1/2″. I’ve been buying and wearing NYDJ for years and know them to be a reliable fit at a great price.

Lately, I’ve been reaching for my Derry Signature Jeans from Frank & Eileen. They have a zip fly with a hook-and-bar closure that lays flat on the waist for a smooth look. They also have pockets, which I love! The fabric is a cotton blend with elastane, woven in Italy and made in California. They feel as comfy as your favorite leggings but look much more stylish.

90s STRAIGHT LEG JEANS / ECCO SNEAKERS

I adore the fit and feel of these Daria jeans, which have become my favorite black straight-leg jeans. They come in several colors, with a relaxed leg, and are made from organic cotton with 4% elastane.

These Paige “Cindy” jeans are a classic medium wash with a cotton/polyester/spandex blend that holds it’s shape nicely. Medium wash, with no obvious distressing feels the most vesitile for me

MORE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS

Straight-leg jeans aren’t about chasing trends or trying to dress younger. They’re about choosing ease, balance, and a silhouette that works with your life instead of against it.

Once you find a pair that fits well, you’ll notice how many outfits suddenly come together without effort. A sweater, a blazer, a denim shirt, even sneakers on days when comfort wins. Good jeans make everything else feel simpler.

And honestly, anything that lets us sit, stand, walk, eat, and live without thinking about our pants deserves a little appreciation.

Do you lean toward a slimmer straight leg, or do you have another denim style you swear by now?

  1. Julie Traxler says:

Loved your assessment of straight leg jeans. I am 5’7” and I have really been enjoying the full leg styles lately. You look great in every photo.

    1. Julie Traxler, I’m 5’7″, too, and if you mean wide leg when you say “full leg”, I wear wide/full leg exclusively. For the shape of my hips/legs, they’re the most flattering for me.

  2. I am also petite 5’1. Could you tell me how tall you are and I can gage my size better when they offer inseam sizes such as 29 inch instead of a size 2 or 4 I am 115lbs.

    1. I’m 5’4” tall and weigh around 138

  3. My greatest frustration in buying jeans … or any pant for that matter … is when the seller doesn’t give the inseam measurement. I’m 5’6″ but have long legs, so have to have at least a 32-inch inseam for a full-length pant. Just showing me a photo of a model doesn’t give me enough information and Tall for one manufacturer rarely translates to Tall for another. I note that adding the inseam measurement seems to be increasing among sellers, so I’m hoping this is a continuing trend. All that little bit of rant being said, thank you so much for all the info on jeans — I wear them daily in my super-casual lifestyle. It’s great to have this primer on all things jeans. Happy Weekend to you, Jennifer

    1. I agree! Give us all the measurements

  4. Wonderful straight leg info and options! I’ve gotten more interested lately in the weight of the denim in the jean, and I’m particularly searching for lighter weight denim to wear in the hot summer months. I wish companies included this information with the jean description so you could choose wisely before ordering. Are you familiar with any lighter weight denim jeans? JJill had some several years ago…

    1. I have a lightweight pair from J. Jill and I love them. I will keep an eye out and let you know what I find.

      1. I think I have the same ones and love them. I wish they still made them.

    2. Beth Barker says:

Hi Kathy C., NYDJ has a cool-tech fabric that I found is comfortable in warm weather. Agree, too, with Jennifer that some JJill jeans are light enough for summer months in New England where it is often humid when it is hot.

  5. Mary Janes with jeans is such cute look.

    1. Agreed and the shoes are SO comfy too

  6. My perfect fit jeans are Talbots straight ankle denim and Chicos so slimming ankle. I no longer have to shorten the length, since I have lost an inch and I don’t wear heels any more. I recently tried NYDJ, but they were too short in the crotch area (I must be long waisted) and about 3″ too long.

  7. Because my waist has thickened, I’m now only five inches less than my hips. Sizing charts on all of your jeans shown have ten inches. The most forgiving waistband I’ve found is Chicos. I buy the trouser style which gives me the waist and hip and only is a little large in the thighs going down my leg. They look attractive in black and dark washes on me and they sit comfortably which is very important. I do have to go up to size 12P for my waist. At 135 pounds and 5’1” with a 27-28” inseam, this is the best for me in jeans. I’m down ten pounds from a year ago but my waist never changed.

  8. Great blog about jeans. You know your stuff. I’m not sure what size I’d wear but boy you give lots of great options. Thanks for all that work.

    1. Thanks Sandra! I hope you’re well xo

  9. Yes! I love straight leg jeans! I’ve tried to add a pair of wide-leg jeans to my wardrobe but the weight/stiffness of denim just makes me look wide. I’m the same jean size as you but 4” taller so the ankle length jeans you wear are floods on me. I’m checking out all your recommendations for tall sizing. Thanks for all your research for us.

  10. For your Canadian followers, Tibal makes a nice straight leg, high waisted jean. The company is out of Montreal but they do have offices in Texas so I’m sure they can be sourced in the US. I used to buy NYDJ but have switched for the good fit and comfort of Tribal. They also come in petite.
I reach for jeans every day. Depending on my day they could be black, or dark wash, or light wash, or grey. Like you, I don’t intend to give up my jeans.

    1. I don’t intend to give up mine either! Thanks for the tip

  11. This was the post for me. I wear jeans most days. I liked how you explained each kind of jeans. I’ve been having trouble finding straight leg ones that aren’t too big in the thigh area. I had much better luck with skinny jeans. You are right that it can be hard to find the right pair. 💙

    1. It’s so personal based on our specific shape. Trial and error is the best way to find your best fit.

  12. I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with relationship with jeans. I think they just work better on certain body types, mine not being one of them. I was fortunate to find a pair of Gloria Vanderbilt jeans at Kohls that are slip on(no zipper), stretchy but not too stretchy and with a slight boot flare at the bottom. They are comfortable, stay in place and work well in the winter with my Born boots. I’ve also found a few jeans at JJill that work for me. In the warmer months I’ve gravitated to wide leg, slightly loose, thinner denim material jeans that I can actually live in. I need to be able to sit, move and live in comfort.

  13. French Dressing (Peggy) jeans are my favourite. The material is just the right weight and they are SO comfortable. I had another pair of jeans in my drawer for years and I never wore them as the waist was too big. My seamstress fixed the waist and now I wear them all the time.

  14. I own several pairs of the NYDJ Marilyn jeans. They fit my thicker waist without bagging in the hips and bottom. I also appreciate that they come in petite sizing, although I do usually have them hemmed an inch or two as they come up a little long on 5′ 2″ me. I also have good luck with Talbots jeans with the “at waist” rise that fit my long waist.

    1. I have quite a few Talbots jeans and appreciate the slightly more forgiving waistband.

  15. Thank you for the straight leg info. I desperately need a new pair of white jeans. I think I will be able to find something from your choices.

  16. Good Morning Jennifer, this is so timely as I’m right in the throes of looking for the perfect straight leg. I bought the Talbots a couple of months ago, and like them just fine, but looking for an additional brand/wash. I think NYDJ might be the perfect pair, but they don’t have 10p. darnit. Surely they’ll re-stock. Thanks for a great article.

    1. They will restock. I often go down a size in NYDJ, so you may find the 8P fits!

  17. Also team straight leg! I wear other styles but straight are best on me. I’m 5’3” with a short torso, carry my weight in my stomach. I like high rise, otherwise I’m yanking my jeans up all day. Like you, I often get “ankle” length to be full length on me. My favorites are Paige Cindy and Gap/Old Navy high rise vintage slim. I’m a lover of loafers and they look great with straight leg jeans! French women aren’t wrong to love straight legs! Tip ladies: after you figure out your brand and size shop Poshmark for your more expensive jeans!

    1. That’s a great tip Shari! French women have many things right about style 🙂

  18. I like NYDJ or Chico’s Girlfriend jeans. The Chico’s come in many colors and are often on sale. I also like their no iron tops. I like easy wear that hold their shape, pack well, and have easy care. As I age, I want comfortable jeans, easy tops that I can dress up or down. I also like Ralph Lauren button up shirts and send them to the cleaners with my husband’s shirts!

    1. I love Chico’s no-iron shirts. They wear so well!

  19. I’ve tried many straight leg jeans and always come back to Levi’s 525. Perfect fit, no frills.

    1. I will try them. Good old Levi’s are the OG of jeans.

  20. Jennifer, I agree. The straight style are my favorite go to lately. I personally love the OG Straight from Old Navy and the price point is great! They also runs sales quite freqently

    1. Good to know! Thanks Donna
