The Jean Style Every Woman Over 60 Should Own
There’s no shortage of advice about the jeans every woman over 60 should be wearing. Most of it feels suspiciously written by someone who hasn’t wrestled with a dressing room mirror lately or tried to sit down after lunch.
I loved my skinny jeans once. Truly. But somewhere along the way, denim that required a deep breath, a prayer, and a calf tug lost its charm. These days, I want jeans that feel like denim, not a second skin applied with industrial strength adhesive.
That’s why straight-leg jeans have quietly become my go-to. They’re timeless, flattering, and blessedly free of drama. When you find the right pair, they just work. No fussing. No adjusting. No wondering if you can bend over without consequences.
If there’s one jean style every woman over 60 should own, this is it. Let’s talk about why.

What Are Straight Leg Jeans?
Straight leg jeans do exactly what their name suggests: they fall straight down from the hip to the ankle. They’re looser than a skinny but not sloppy. They are usually fitted through the hips and give nice room in the thigh area. That straight line creates a balanced silhouette that flatters nearly every body type.

Choosing the Right Fit
Fit is everything, especially with straight leg jeans. Because they’re not meant to cling, it’s important to find a pair that follows your shape without squeezing. Here are a few things I look for when I’m shopping for straight leg denim:
- Waist height: I gravitate toward mid to high-rise jeans because they give a smoother line under tops and feel more secure. Low-rise options are out there, but they don’t do our midsections any favors. Mid-rise also works well for those with a shorter torso.
- Fabric: A little bit of stretch can go a long way. I like jeans with about 1–2% elastane or spandex so they move with me, but not so much that they lose their shape.
- Length: This is a big one. The most flattering straight leg jeans either skim the top of your foot or hit just above the ankle. Anything longer tends to puddle, and anything too short can look awkward unless you’re wearing a cropped style on purpose.
If you’re petite, look for brands that offer shorter inseams so you don’t have to rely on tailoring. I often choose ankle-length styles because they work with a variety of shoes and are especially flattering with loafers or low boots.
What Shoes to Wear with Straight Leg Jeans
Straight leg jeans work with more shoes than you might expect. Here are a few that I wear regularly:
- Loafers: A classic pairing that’s ideal for everyday wear.
- Ankle boots: Choose a pair that fits closely around the ankle or tucks neatly under the hem.
- Sneakers: Clean, low-profile styles look best.
- Flats: Ballet flats and pointed-toe styles work beautifully and give a slightly dressier feel.
- Heels: If your jeans are long enough, a block heel or kitten heel adds a little lift without sacrificing comfort.
Best Straight Leg Jeans for Women Over 50

My current favorite straight-leg jeans are these Eileen Fisher straights, which fit like a dream. They come in 3 washes and have enough stretch for comfort but do not bag out at the knees…I hate when that happens.

The FRAME Le Sleek jeans are precisely what the name suggests… sleek, polished, and super chic. They have a slim, straight leg that gives a streamlined look while still feeling comfortable. The fabric has just the right amount of stretch to move with you while holding its shape, so they look just as good at the end of the day as they do when you put them on. With a clean design and a versatile medium-wash, I find them super easy to dress up or down!

Another great straight-leg option is these NYDJ Marilyn jeans. They come in four blue washes, and I’m wearing the Quinn. They come in regular, petite, and tall sizes 00-18. I’m wearing the 6 petite, and they’re plenty long with an inseam of 29 1/2″. I’ve been buying and wearing NYDJ for years and know them to be a reliable fit at a great price.

Lately, I’ve been reaching for my Derry Signature Jeans from Frank & Eileen. They have a zip fly with a hook-and-bar closure that lays flat on the waist for a smooth look. They also have pockets, which I love! The fabric is a cotton blend with elastane, woven in Italy and made in California. They feel as comfy as your favorite leggings but look much more stylish.

I adore the fit and feel of these Daria jeans, which have become my favorite black straight-leg jeans. They come in several colors, with a relaxed leg, and are made from organic cotton with 4% elastane.

These Paige “Cindy” jeans are a classic medium wash with a cotton/polyester/spandex blend that holds it’s shape nicely. Medium wash, with no obvious distressing feels the most vesitile for me
MORE STRAIGHT-LEG JEANS
Straight-leg jeans aren’t about chasing trends or trying to dress younger. They’re about choosing ease, balance, and a silhouette that works with your life instead of against it.
Once you find a pair that fits well, you’ll notice how many outfits suddenly come together without effort. A sweater, a blazer, a denim shirt, even sneakers on days when comfort wins. Good jeans make everything else feel simpler.
And honestly, anything that lets us sit, stand, walk, eat, and live without thinking about our pants deserves a little appreciation.
Do you lean toward a slimmer straight leg, or do you have another denim style you swear by now?

I want the 70’s back.
Everyone smelled like a fresh lemon .
The jeans high waisted with a flare.
Now if I only weighed the same it would be ideal.. still at 67 being a size 10 not so bad
Really love the look of straight leg jeans, but with my shape, I find that most straight leg jeans fit like skinny jeans except around the lower calf and ankle. Very much pear shaped, it is a real challenge to find Jeans that fit my hips and very thick thighs. Over 3/4 of my bottoms, be it capri length, long shorts, pants, jeans and even workout clothes have been altered (taken in) the waist to fit my waist if it fits my hips and thighs. So I fit the largest parts and then resize for the waist. Does anyone else have that issue and if so any jeans brands or styles you recommend?
I’ve been gradually phasing out skinny jeans. I don’t have the physical and emotional energy to wrestle myself into them anymore. I’ve been wearing a wide leg style by Lauren Conrad for Kohls. Weird washes though. I bought online and almost returned them. So much work finding good jeans. I’m 5’2″ and nothing seems short enough. Just saw a positive review for Uniqlo jeans. I believe they offer instore tailoring.
This is so helpful! Thank you. One brand that I find myself reaching for time after time, because they fit my shape so well, are Democracy, especially the “Ab-solution” models.
Only 5’ I find that straight leg jeans are about the only shape that looks good and doesn’t make me look and squatty. I am delighted to have stumbled on Kohls Sonoma high rise straight leg jeans in the perfect petite length! I also wear both Lands End and LLBean petite jeans. LLBean jeans have that true denim style and feel.
You look amazing in the Paige jean with sweater with sweater and hat ensemble!
Thanks! I love that hat
What a great discussion! I find myself reaching for my dark wash straight leg and slim leg jeans the most. With foot issues, I find the straight leg style so forgiving with multiple shoe options.
Agreed!
I am so confused by jeans right now. I have so many skinny jeans that I love but don’t seem to be in style right now. I have a few straight leg pairs and my husband just bought me some flares for Christmas. You really helped explain straight leg jeans at least. Thanks for the info. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year Rosemary!
I prefer the boot cut as during fall and winter, I like to show off my boot collection! Levis high rise boot cut fit me perfectly.
I don’t wear jeans as much as I wear athleisure wear. My waist has expanded in the last few years, and I have very slim hips and legs, so finding jeans that fit in both the waist and hip/legs is very frustrating. Talbots has always been my “go to” for jeans, but their styles vary widely in how they fit. I currently have a pair of Talbots pull on travel jeans that fit well. I also have a pair of Chicos pull on jeans that fit well. Both of these stores have more affordable jeans as well. I don’t wear jeans often enough to spend more than $125-$150 on them. Thanks for giving us all of the options! You are my “in box” entry that I look forward to every day!
I love pull-on jeans!! So comfy
Hope you had a great Christmas!
I bought a fabulous pair of straight leg ankle length jeans and they are great for a short silhouette…Mos Mosh from Denmark…I have been wearing them with various tops and sweaters!
Sending you wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year.

Leslie
Happy New Year Leslie!!
Merry Christmas Jennifer! Why is it that jeans are the hardest item of clothing to find a good fit. My issue is I’m long waisted so finding jeans that come up high enough in the rise and feel comfortable is difficult. You mention you are also long waisted so I’m curious what size you wear in the Eileen Fisher jeans and how the rise is. And if you would recommend any other brand that fits the bill. Thanks for your help!
I bought the regular length in small because I prefer a higher rise. I’m usually an XS in EF but my weight is up a smidge this season. Frame wigh rise is quite high as are many Talbots.
Good Morning Jennifer. The straight legs I reach for more often are Wit and Wisdom. I have a petite I wear with sneakers and a longer inseam for shoes with practical heels/boots. I also like the fit of my Talbots straight leg, but the denim is heavier and not as cozy/comfortable. My Levi’s are also a favorite. It’s been a few years since I’ve purchased/worn NYDJ. The last pair, even when sized down, stretched out of shape after a few hours. Are you still finding this? One last thing … can’t remember if I told you, I did buy those blue suede Paul Greens. LOVE them with light wash jeans. Thanks for the recommendation.
I love Wit & Wisdom too!! Great jeans fabulous price.
At 5’7″, I can carry off wide leg jeans, always with a high waist to elongate my legs. This is the perfect jean style for my body shape. Skinny jeans and low rises are the worst for me. Medium rises are low-rise on me, with my high waist and long torso. Find what works personally and stick with it!
I likwstraight leg jeans too. I absolutely love the photo of you in the gray hat & sweater with the trees in the background!
I am fairly new to this community and wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your wonderfully positive approach to aging. It has become the highlight of my day! Also you have a great sense of humor!!!! Love it!..
How about helping us to add color and pattern to our wardrobe without looking clownish. I have plenty of neutrals. Thanks .
Welcome Kathy!
While I am opposite of most commenters here, I am 6ft tall with a 37″ inseam. Everything I try on are floods! Help please.
I know Loft carries many pants in tall, as does Madewell, J. Crew and Ann Taylor.
I like the pants without the zipper fly
If you have a little tummy it makes it look bigger.
