Layering On Style

Happy Friday, ladies. Our weather has turned unseasonably cold which suits me just fine so we’re all reaching for layers. I don’t live in a very cold climate and I know the delight would wear off fast if I did, but for now, I love that I’m finally getting to wear my new coat.Ā

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the Nordstrom house brands. Their quality just keeps getting better and better and the selections are vast. More of it is finding its way into my wardrobe this winter, especially sweaters. After my dryer mishap earlier this fall, I’ve had to replace much of my cashmere collection and the Nordstrom brand has come to my rescue, especially since they all got marked down. The colors are simply yummy and the quality is fabulous. You can check out all the Nordstrom Made brands here.

But I digress…today’s outfit features another wardrobe building block that comes in tons of colors and is incredibly versatile. This lightweight cardigan is by the Nordstrom brand. I love their line of quality classics that fit seamlessly into my wardrobe at an affordable price point.

A cardigan is the ultimate cozy layer and these everyday cardigans are perfect year-round. Because they’re lightweight and breathable, they layer over things without being too hot. I like how this simple cardigan ties my separates together into an elevated look. It comes in 5 colors, sizes XXS-16W. The description says it flutters and flows with every step, and it does. It runs a bit large so I sized it down to an XS and it’s perfect.

I don’t think of purple as a holiday color, but I’m declaring it so. I love how it pops against this black so I feel festive in it. It’s available in 5 colors sizes XS-16W. The website suggests if you’re between sizes, to size down but I sized up and am happy I did. It’s loose and slouchy but not sloppy or oversized. This sweater also comes in a v-neck version here and I did size down for that one because it’s a tunic shape.

Give this gal some pockets and she is a happy camper. I just love them! These soft velour pants come in teal or black sizes XXS-16W. Although I love teal, black seems perfect for the holidays and I think it looks richer.

I’m wearing an XS. These could be dressed down with sneakers or up to go to a party. They have a nice high rise and wide, flowy leg. Is velour the new velvet for pants? It is if you want a luxe look that’s easy care that doesn’t require dry-cleaning!

*A great tip to remember is the wider the leg, the softer the fabric so it flows and moves with every step.

I’ve been testing lots of new lipstick shades lately because many in my collection were beginning to make me look washed out. I always go back to this Rosewater because it’s the perfect cool rose for my complexion.Ā  It’s a natural, clean formula with amazing staying power and it’s also cruelty-free, so it ticks all the boxes for me.

NordstromĀ is my favorite department store for so many reasons, not the least of which is their incredible customer service with free shipping and returns, always. Joining theĀ Nordy club here is free, and allows you to earn points towards notes you can use to shop plus you get free basic alterations. They also offer BOPUS, ROTUS (reserve online, try on in-store), and curbside pickup.

How are you dressing for the holidays this year?

Thanks for reading and remember to wear what makes you feel confident.

  1. Love your outfit especially the velour wide pants and I am usually not a fan of wide pants.
    You look very festive.

  2. I like the velour pants and the outfit looks great on you. But the pants will not work on me because they do not come in petite. Nordstrom needs to carry more choices in petite fit.

  3. Hi Jenniferā€¦..have been following you for several years nowā€¦ā€¦I am 84 and must admit happy to see you back in some black clothing. I do appreciate that it is not for everyone but to me it will always be chic and elegant. I love a pop of color but a black turtleneck and black pantsā€¦ā€¦..beautiful. Enjoy your postings!!

    1. I love wearing black and will continue to do so šŸ˜‰

  4. Arenā€™t your feet and ankles cold?

  5. I love this outfit, Jennifer. You look fabulous! I do have a question – are you wearing socks, or are your legs bare? If you’re wearing socks, I would love to know brand and color – they look good, and my ankles get cold with no socks!

    1. Just tiny socks that donā€™t show. Iā€™d wear black socks with this outfit. I always choose a color to match my pants.

  6. Love the Nordstrom brand it never disappoints. Thank you for reminding me of it. My cashmere had a similar disaster perpetrated by those silent little devils, moths! And lining our closet with cedar did not help:(.

    1. Moths are persistent little devils. I live in fear of another attack.

  7. Lorrie Orr says:

What a great outfit! Love the purple top. The trousers look so comfortable, but I’m not quite up to wearing wide legs yet. I’m sure that will come. Your new lipstick is a beautiful colour!

  8. Very pretty on you. Thanks for the information about Nordstroms.

  9. The lavender looks beautiful on you. Color really compliments you.
You mentioned thinner hair and going gray / silver in a recent post. I wanted to share my experience. My mom had incredibly fine hair and would never use a comb or brush, only a pick. She tried having straight hair but complained because you could see the bald areas on top of her head. She once wore wigs too. I took her to the hairdresser that specialized in these issues and she suggested a perm. It worked, the fuller curls helped hide the bald areas.
I hope you find what works best for you. And Iā€™m grateful you address such valuable topics that most women eventually experience.

    1. Thank you for sharing Anne. I am happy to discover this pretty color. I prefer neutrals so Iā€™m always thrilled to find a fun color I love.

  10. Love your shade of lipstick. What brand is Rosewater?

  11. Your outfit today could have been borrowed from my closet as variations of that has become my at home outfit. For the holidays, I have a pair of wide leg black velvet pants that are perfect for casual holiday gatherings. I still have a number of fancy sweaters and satin/silk blouses to pair with them, but I may buy something new to celebrate the end of my chemo.
I’m also on the hunt for some new lipstick colours. Recently I’ve noticed my brighter fuchsia shades are a bit overwhelming. This may be temporary, so I’m not throwing anything out yet. I’m excited about playing with new make-up colours over the next few months for my new look.

    1. Yvonne, when Iā€™ve bought a fuchsia lipstick that is too bright, I layer it with a very light pink lipstick. Itā€™s odd, but sometimes it seems to work best if I put the light one on first and the bright one on top. I rarely toss cosmetics because of colour. I just try to create my own. One time I did it with nail polish and I got so many compliments on the colour.

    2. Leslie Adams says:

I have a similar problem with bright colored lipstick because of my muted colouring. I apply a neutral lip colour over or under the bright colour and it makes it wearable.

  12. Jennifer,

As always your posts are so helpful with selecting a size when you tell us what you’re wearing. Every purchase I have made based on your recommendation I have loved and the fit has been perfect! I bought my very first cashmere sweater based on your review from Quince and I adore it (I pet it every night). I now shop online at Nordstrom because of you and would have never have darkened their doors in the past because I thought they were out of “my league”. Love the shade of your lipstick. Have you ever tried Cover Girl’s Outlast All-Day lipstick? I switched from Clinique to CG because I was tired of reapplying my lipstick all day and scrubbing it off cups and glasses. Some say it’s dry but if you swipe on the clear gloss that comes with it it is very moisturizing. It real does last all day and through meals. Keep up the good work!

  13. Iā€™ve never been disappointed in the quality of a Nordstrom brand. During the last Anniversary Sale, I broke one of my own rules and picked up a Nordstrom soft pink pullover only based on its great price. (This practice has led me to too much uncoordinated stuff.) What a happy accident thatā€™s turned out to be! I wear my broken rule sweater at least once a week.

    1. Thatā€™s great! I love those happy discoveries.
