Classic Trend For Spring 2021

Happy Thursday, ladies. We all know that classic wardrobe pieces are timeless. But can they also be on-trend? You betcha and this season reinforces that what comes around goes around. Today I’m styling two looks that nod to the nautical classic trend which is popping up everywhere this spring.

Coco Chanel was famous for her nautical pieces and Ralph Lauren includes them in every collection so it’s safe to say, it’s classic. When wearing nautical you can go with shiny buttons and epaulets or it can be as simple as donning a classic striped tee.

This classic Breton tee even has the anchor motif to add to the nautical vibe. It’s a nice heavyweight knit with a substantial feel. I paired it with these wide-leg twill chino’s which aren’t technically sailor pants but give you the look. This top with skinny jeans would still be fun, but not have the same feel.

STRIPED BRETONS

These wide-leg sailor jeans are a slightly less subtle take on the nautical trend and a popular shape for spring. I hate to be the bearer of bad news ladies, but it’s being said that skinny jeans are out for spring 2021. I doubt they’ll stop making them and, I for one, will continue to wear them, but I also love a wider leg to help balance my broad shoulders.

This striped cardigan has a slightly more refined feel than a Breton and elevates the whole look from sporty to elegant. It has small gold-toned buttons down the front and is super soft. This is ivory and navy so being persnickety, I wouldn’t personally wear it with white jeans, but it’ll be awesome with chinos, blue jeans, or off-white jeans. It comes in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite. I’m wearing a misses small.

I know many of you are buried in snow and we aren’t exactly wearing sandals here in Northern California so I’m wearing it with these yoga pants and my navy suede boots. These yoga pants have been on constant rotation in my wardrobe because they’re super comfy and act as a chameleon in outfits. They dress up or down and are perfect for hanging at home.

The addition of a gold necklace elevates this entire look to something I would wear out to lunch or dinner… if we were doing that yet.

This double-breasted sweater jacket is the most stunning shade of blue. I love the color and feel of the knit but the shape is wrong on me. I tried it with white jeans first and found the dark color made my top half look larger by comparison.

Then I tried it with the blue jeans, which I prefer. It’s a better balance for my silhouette and I love how it bookends with my favorite ballet flats which are also a classic trend for spring!

  1. Received the blue knit jacket from Talbots and oh my goodness! Not only is it a beautiful color which I didn’t have in my closet, but it’s versatile and not too heavy and thick as some knits can be which would make it unsuitable for most of our southern California weather. It fits well and looks great open or closed. I have to admit, I wasn’t expecting to like it, but it’s a winner! Thanks for the fashion heads up on a wonderful item and color I can add to my closet.

  2. Love the striped top with the heart on it. We live in the Channel Islands ( between France and England) and most summers take our motorhome across the water to France . This is just the sort of top I would take with me – dressed down with jeans or paired with white trousers for a more dressy look.

The picture with the flowers was my favorite!! We are buried in snow and it is still coming!!
I think the shade of the light blue jacket is your color. I will still wear my stripes, but that is about as nautical as I get! Thanks for all your work you do for us!!

  4. Jennifer Iā€™m thrilled to find you! sister of another mother so to speak! My hair is like yours( thanks for tip on Aveda purple conditioner) wear a size larger on top than bottom. My complexion ditto to yours .I needed to have a ā€œsistaā€ who deals with aging, wanting to look stylish and figure out what news that goes with whatā€™s already in the closet. I needed someone who knew what to do
    And thatā€™s you! Yippee!

As a tiny girl growing up on the BC coast, I remember the seamen coming into town (we lived near the wharf) in their sailor suits. I thought they looked so handsome and to this day, I love a nautical look. I’m especially fond of the striped cardigan. I’d add it to my wardrobe in a heartbeat if Talbots had a Canadian website. Custom duties and fees combined with the exchange on the dollar make ordering from the American site unreasonably expensive.

  6. Oh my goodness – it looks just beautiful where you live! Makes me so anxious for spring! My favorite on you was the striped navy and cream cardigan. I prefer cream over white since it doesn’t seem to make my teeth look dingy which bright white can sometimes do. Your teeth and smile are gorgeous! Do you have any special tips for keeping them that way? Thanks for modeling the new spring fashions!

  7. Blue is your color! Very pretty sweater.

  8. While I know fashion trends are always changing, for some of us, these new trends may not feel comfortable.

For instance, skinny leg pants. I have never felt comfortable in them snd if I wear them, it is with a top that is long and gives me complete coverage. I hope to soon start working on getting into better shape. I need to get my husband snd me COvID shots then join our very nice Seniors Center and get back to exercising. Once I feel good about my body, then I will feel free to wear a wider variety of clothing.

I hope what I said made sense. I am not against fashion and live new looks but if I donā€™t like the reflection in the mirror, I tend not to wear it.

  9. Love that shade of blue and jacket style! I prefer it open with jeans as you are wearing. I also really like the Breton top. While classics may be a staple, I must have colour and contrast in fashion to feel good!

  10. Hi Jennifer, I agree with you. Talbots yoga pants are great. They are comfortable, flattering and easy to wear. The striped sweater looks great with the pants. Who would guess you are wearing yoga pants. patval

    1. I don’t think many people would think I was wearing yoga pants:) They should have called them stretch pants instead.

Hahaha….you are so cute. I love the color of the beautiful blue jacket . It is stunning. I understand why it isnā€™t for you with your wide shoulders. It might work for me; I have narrow shoulders and wide hips. Otherwise, our complexions are the same. Thank you for your advice.ā¤ļø

  11. You are stunning in blue and I do like this jacket on you with the white pants. I like nautical and always have something for summer with that theme. Navy pants, my chambray shirt with little anchors and white sneakers is the first thing I grab at the hint of summer. I live on the coast so we go for that theme in summer.

    1. Lucky you, living on the coast! I’d wear it all the time if I did.

  12. Love the striped cardigan, a perfect length with the yoga pants. And I do like the color of the sweater jacket, but to me, the fabric and the jacket style, especially the epaulettes and gold buttons, are mis-matched. I would have liked to see it in a softer style.

  13. Iā€™m not a fan of any of these looks. But the worst by far is the sailor pants with the romantic blouse.

I do like the striped cardigan but itā€™s way too long.

I agree with other posters that classic style is the most attractive and versatile. We all have to know what works with our body type and adapt trends to what looks best on us.

Iā€™m short like you and would never go with wider leg than modified boot cut with a slimmer cut top. With wide shoulders I think a wide leg just makes me look a rectangle.

  14. Love the heart on the striped top and would wear it with black slim pants or jeans. That would be me completely happy. Really didn’t like most of the looks on you or for me. The tops are too boxy, not structured enough (the double breasted sweater), horizontal stripes, peasant blouse with wide legged stiff looking pants. I’ve never gotten the hang of double-breasted. They button placement seems awkward unless the jacket is always buttoned up, however, I’m now rethinking that because it does balance out when the jacket isn’t buttoned.

  15. I love the nautical theme – even though I live in land-locked Alberta! šŸ™‚
The light blue sweater doesn’t seem to have enough structure and looks a bit lumpy. I love the striped cardigan and would wear it in a heartbeat.
The double-button wide-legged sailor trousers, however, have a costume-y feel. I think you’d have to be very careful if you wear these. I do like how you’ve paired them with a romantic blouse. The inclination might be to double-down on the nautical theme with a faux-military top (Breton, double-breasted jacket, etc) but that’s where it veers into costume territory.
Thanks for your optimism that Spring is around the corner!

    1. Spring does have to be coming. Iā€™m hoping sooner than later.

  16. Iā€™m so happy skinny jeans are leaving. I never wore them because they were uncomfortable and looked like I was trying too hard to look trendy. I donā€™t have hips ( pretty straight body type) but even I look like an inverted ice cream cone. And wearing long tops to cover up looks silly on someone short ( 4ā€™11ā€).
I like the sailor pants shape, but would prefer a softer fabric. And Iā€™ll wear my pants long long long for my legsā€™ sake. The blue sweater is such a good color for you, not for me. And no double breasted- makes me look thick.

  17. MollyB123 says:

Oh, that striped cardigan ā€” love it!!! Yes, definitely nautical but not costume-y. Buying it today!

  18. If the nautical style is a trend this spring, I may need to pass it by. As beautiful as that blue color is on your featured sweater jacket, I am not on board with the gold buttons or the double breasted, blocky style. To me, you look better with the jacket open rather than buttoned up. I wonā€™t be investing in sailor pants either. Sometimes, I feel styles edge too close to looking like a costume. I really donā€™t have anywhere that I would go that this style would be my choice to wear.
Itā€™s good to challenge our limits but ultimately, it really clarifies our basic, proven wardrobe choices that give us that confidence to dress in what we love.
Thank you so much for keeping me current with all thatā€™s new and trending.
