Jeans On My Radar

Is the rumor of skinny jeans being “over” true? Only if you are over them. The truth is, women can and should choose the jean that flatters their unique shape and feels good on. A touch of trend helps to keep us looking current, but ultimately we need to buy what works for our bodies. I have a straight figure so straight and tapered jeans are on my radar this fall.

This post is sponsored by Nordstrom and Shopstyle.

I’m a true blue jean lover. A peek into my closet reveals more blue jeans than any other garment. Their casual vibe just works for my lifestyle and I love their versatility. The Nsale is on for a few more days and there are plenty of great deals to be had on fully stocked jeans, so I thought I would share what I bought.

The Perfect Vintage by Madewell is a favorite shape with an 11″ rise that is fitted through the hip and thigh. It’s heavier denim with a touch of stretch so they hold you in, but also mold to your body and have a tapered leg. For a day of walking and shopping the Nsale, these worked perfectly with a pair of comfy sneakers. I love these sneakers because they’re lighter weight than any other sneaker I own and very flexible. My little cropped cardigan is low on stock but other colors are available.

This pair of Perfect Vintage jeans are in the Ainsworth wash which is a slightly deeper wash in the same classic shape. They run a bit large so I went down one size to a 27 in these for a slimmer fit. My knit blazer is also part of the sale and a great casual topper over jeans. It comes in this blue or white, in regular and petite, sizes XXS- XXL, and is fully stocked

Madewell also makes skinnies, straight’s, crops, many in petite, regular, plus, and tall. These just landed in my shopping cart because a stovepipe leg is one of my favorite shapes.

I’m happy to see these Marilyn NYDJ straight-leg jeans as part of the Nsale in a new wash. It’s strategically faded but not distressed. They also come in a dark floral print that’s pretty if you love subtle florals. All NYDJ jeans have a special lift tuck technology that helps lift the rear and flatten your tummy. The denim is soft and very stretchy so always go down one size. They’re available in petite and regular here, plus here.

This silk and rayon scarf is large enough to wrap around your shoulders and whisper-thin so you can easily wrap it around your neck. I could not resist this color combo which will coordinate with most things in my wardrobe this fall. My cardigan is another great find from the Nordstrom brand. It’s beautifully made, soft and drapey, comes in 6 gorgeous colors, sizes XXS-XXL. I’m wearing the teal, in a small.

I was thrilled to see these Munro booties in the Nsale in this taupe this year and snapped them up immediately. I bought the black ones several years ago and love how comfy they are. Munros are sized from 5-11 in medium and wide widths so the fit is amazing. Being water-resistant is also great because suede can take a beating in the rain.

Nordstromā€™s is my favorite department store for many reasons. Their customer service canā€™t be beaten plus they always have free shipping and returns, which is important to me. It’s hard to know what may fit when ordering online, so I can order both sizes and simply return what doesn’t fit, free of charge.

What shape jeans are you planning to wear this fall?

  1. Ditto! Ditto! Ditto, to all those positive comments you received today! Will I ever tire off my jeans, donā€™t think so. I am 75 and still finding them the backbone of my daily wardrobe. A huge ā€œyesā€ to that teal cardigan too!
Your inspiration has been beyond helpful for me. Also, I love reading all the wonderful comments . What a fun blog to follow!

    1. Thanks, Jan. I’m so glad you’re here joining the conversation.

  2. I love this look, the teal colors are among my favorite. I just ordered those jeans based on your picture! I also love the belt. Is it older or still available? I ove your style and look forward to reading your blog every day. Thanks so much.

    1. It is new. I bought the belt at Nordstrom in Canada, but it’s not available in the US. If you’re in Canada, I can send you the link.

  3. The teal sweater with scarf and the blue knit blazer outfits are great on you! I would wear them too!
My favorite 2 jeans at this time are my dark wash Talbots straight leg, & almost boot cut jeans. I’m in my late sixties so I’m pretty simple with styling, but yet stay modern.

  4. When I had my colors analyzed years (MANY years) ago I was told that teal is one of the colors that flatters everyone. It must be the case, with all the favorable comments today from people wanting that sweater. Itā€™s just beautiful, and that scarf is icing on the cake. So happy to see some jeans cut to fit over the tops of ankle boots (rather than skinny crops that end an inch or two above themā€”just cannot pull off that look, and it never made sense to me in the dead of winter). Thanks, Jennifer!

  5. I have more jeans in my closet then anything else. I usually wear skinny jeans but love the straight jeans you were wearing. Those cardigans are awesome!

I am so pleased! After reading your response to Diane B , and the link for the sweater, Jennifer, I was able to order twoā€¦sequoia and tealā€¦ immediately for šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ delivery. šŸ‘All I found previously on the CA site was the very bright blue one.
Your combination of jeans, scarf, boots and sweater looks like you shopped my closetā€¦ albeit , in a smaller size !
Your blog is so much fun to read, and I always learn from your tips.
PS How are the Tulip shoes working out? Wearing my metallic grey pair presently.

    1. Iā€™m so glad the link worked!! Iā€™ll do it more often now that Iā€™ve learned how. Iā€™m loving those Tulips. I need more colors šŸ™‚

  7. I love my jeans. They are timeless dressed up or down.
That teal sweater looks absolutely awesome on you.
What a great color for you.
Love the scarf also (so do tell how you tied it).
    Other outfits were great too.
    Thanks for great modeling. šŸ‘

    1. Thanks Lin! Iā€™ve described in a few comments here but I will make a video gor you.

      1. Thank you. šŸ’—

  8. retro-roost says:

I meant to mention your pretty glasses as well. They are youthful and current, and suite you so well.

    1. Thanks, theyā€™re newish and fun

  9. retro-roost says:

You look so pretty and feminine in today’s post all the while wearing denim! Thank you so very much for your real and down to earth posts on clothing. Truly! Your looks are achievable, with texture and structure, and always a feminine quality. So appreciated. I also would be interested to know how you tied your scarf. Thank you again.

    1. Thank you so much! Iā€™ll do a video on the scarf but basically I rolled into a long strip, draped over the back of my neck, crossed twice in front and tied in back.

  10. Pam Sledge says:

The sweater and scarf look great on you and great together. Would you please explain how you tied the scarf so that it doesn’t look bulky?

    1. I roll the scarf tightly into a long strip, drape and the back of my neck, twist twice in front then toe in back and tuck the knot under the other piece. It works even better if you fold into narrow strip and iron flat.

  11. That silk and modal scarf and open cardi are the absolutely BEST colors for YOU! I like the style too,but those colors are YOUR colors!šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘

    1. They are. I buy it every time I see it:)

  12. Hi Jennifer, I like the jeans you’ve picked out but I have a curvy figure and am unsure
which style would be best for me. I’m not a plus size but do need a little more room in the
    hips and thighs.

    1. The Madewell ones have fuller thighs. Many brands do make curved versions too so those are always great options

  13. I love jeans, too. I have lighter weight and lighter wash for spring and summer and darker wash for winter. Mine have always been slim cut or straight. But I have added two pair of higher waist. I am not a fan of flare cut. I think there should always be a variety, so women can choose what works best for their shape and image.

  14. Paulette Levy says:

Love all of these looks! You look great in the teal green and cadet blue sweaters (sweater /. Great outfits!

  15. With 317 days a year of sunshine in Victoria, B. C. , jeans are the farthest thing on my mind. This fall I will be looking for a good pair of boot cut jeans. I too have difficulty finding a comfortable pair of jeans.

  16. krista rogers says:

often when i click on your links i get a “network gateway error”. would love to see some of the jeans in this post…

  17. Karen Trainor says:

I love the long, teal sweater and scarf combination on you. I also have a straight figure and have tended not to tuck in my shirt, and especially haven’t worn belts. BUT you pull it off beautifully so I’m inspired to give it another go. By the way, my closet is filled with blue jeans, too. Thank you šŸ™‚ Quick question— how do I choose the right color and style of belt for an outfit?

    1. Do try them. I have no curves so it helps to keep my pants up and gives the ā€œillusionā€ of a waist. If you have short legs, have your belt match your pants to elongate your legs. Or, choose a color to coordinate with your outfit. I am loving basic tan these days for versatility.

  18. Iā€™ve changed over my jeans to straight or bootcut. I find them more flattering than skinny but have kept one pair to wear with tall boots. Living on the coast, we get mostly rain so booties are my go to rather than tall boots or snow boots. With this heat, I canā€™t even think about wearing long pants. šŸ˜…

    1. I hope it cools down for you soon. Vancouver is so much cooler than where we live in California, this feels cool to me:)

  19. Kimberly Hale says:

Those look great on you! I’m still pretty attached to my skinny-jeans. I’m tall & “curvy” and I wear a lot of tunic length tops, so the skinny fit works well for me. But…I might try something new šŸ˜‰

    1. Lucky you being tall! šŸ™‚ Everything goes this season so wear whatā€™s most flattering and comfy for you.

  20. Hi Jennifer,
I still have too many skinny jeans/pants in my closet to stop wearing them completely. But I have moved toward straight leg pants and even flowy wide leg pants. I’m not a huge jeans person because I’ve never found any that were truly comfortable. The hunt continues!

    1. Luckily everything goes this year. I own a lot of skinny jeans too but Iā€™m just giving them a rest, not removing them from my closet.

  21. You look relaxed yet spicy in your beautiful teal sweater and scarf. Just love your look! We are going to France in September and Iā€™m wondering about clothes and packing. It is supposed to be cool. Gosh that sounds good!

    1. I suggest neutrals to pack and slice it up with accessories. Iā€™m so envious. Have fun!

  22. I like the look . I wear this look here in Texas in Nov. -Feb. I love the teal color sweater. Nordstrom has lovely things, but I find them too expensive now that I am retired. Thanks for showing cute clothes. They do help give ideas on how to put things together.

    1. Karen Trainor says:

Donna, I was in Nordstrom yesterday. A saleslady had on a very cute denim jacket and I asked what brand it was, so I could go try one on. She said it came from Target. It was as cute and on trend as any of the expensive ones. She mentioned that she shops often at Old Navy, especially during sales. Also, if you have a Nordstrom Rack near you…I’ve found great deals there and it’s often the same merchandise as in the Nordstrom stores. I, too, shop on a budget and like to get “the look for less!”

      1. Target and the Rack have great pieces!!

    2. Hopefully this can give you ideas to shop from your closet šŸ™‚

  23. I loved all of your looks! Added several things to my wish list. I wish Madewell offered petite lengths. The Nordstrom brand cardigan is lovely, but I saw that it is 50% wool. Was it itchy?

    1. I canā€™t usually wear wool but this one is mot itchy at all.

  24. That teal sweater is something I ” need” in my closet. It is a soft gorgeous colour that flatters yet does not scream. I am all for the straight leg and boot cut jeans but need to have stretch, not the jeans of youth that are not so forgiving of a fluctuating weight. I still prefer my jeans with no distressing or unfinished hems. Your scarf is gorgeous and a great finishing piece.

  25. Love all of the outfits with jeans today. The teal cardigan is gorgeous.

    1. I could not resist it:)

  26. Jennifer,
The teal cardigan sweater is a great color for you. It allows you to shine. Youā€™re glowing.

    1. Itā€™s one of the exact colors in the Iris of my eye. I love it! Try one in your eye color Nancy. It works!

  27. Looking for a way to love jeans. Being petite with straight figure, but exercised thighs and waist that changes with the season, hard to find comfort. Tend to avoid wearing them, but giving it another shot. Am pulling out what I have to discard ones that are uncomfortable. Wide legs make me look shorter than I am. Stretch jeans seem to go shapeless with wear. Love the look. Still experimenting…
    Thanks for great post.

    1. Try a straight it stove pipe leg. The Madewell Perfect Vintage style has a wider thigh than the NYDJ so they might work for you. Give them a try

      1. Elizabeth says:

oh, I did not know that…that might be really helpful..I have bigger thighs, and the madewells might be a better fit. I did buy some madewells at the Nsale, accidentally returned them – I thought I was returning some other jeans that did not work, and now the ones I accidentally returned are sold out. I learned my lesson– put on my glasses!!!:)

      2. They are restocking so just keep your eyes out and you may find them again.
