Maximizing Closet Space with Hangers

Happy Monday ladies! We drove home over the weekend and are settling back into reality. Nothing like a couple weeks on the road to make me appreciate my own kitchen and laundry room. A conversation started in the comments over the weekend which prompted me to finish this post. I started it back in late December but forgot about it until now.

What do you hang your clothes on? About 15 years ago I invested in some nice wooden ones which have rubber grips on the shoulders that keep clothes from slipping off. I bought several packs at a time and gradually got rid of all my unmatched plastic ones. Matching hangers make your closet look more organized and is a delight.

Fast forward to sharing a small closet with my husband and I’ve been struggling with limited rod space. When we bought our little trailer, my rod space shrunk to 8ā€ which meant I needed to get creative.

I bought these huggable hangers to save space and fell in love. They have a flocked surface that holds your clothes exactly where you put them. My clothes take up half the rod space they used to with the wooden hangers and keep everything wrinkle free. They’re ergonomically shaped to not leave dents in your clothes and I can report that they don’t!

I was so happy with them I bought a case for my daughter as one of her Christmas presents and she loves them!matching wooden hanger for jackets on A Well Styled Life

My beautiful wooden hangers now store my jackets and coats plus fill our guest room and front hall closet. If I ever get an enormous closet I may go back to using all wooden but honestly, these flocked ones are terrific.

Have you tried flocked hangers?

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

  1. I’ve been using the Huggable hangars for a long time and redid my closet with a new set recently. The only clothes that fall off the hangars are the couple of coats that came with heavy wooden hangars. And I gifted my co-workers this Christmas with hangars of their own. The hangars create extra space and the uniform size gives your closet an orderly appearance.
There are cascading hooks if you want to hang say one blazer and four possible tops together. and there are 23 color choices including 3 shades of purple.

    1. Iā€™d love to find the cascading ones for tank tops!! I knew hangars made a great gift;)I prefer wood for coats so the shoulders have more support.

Love these hangers!I changed mine over abut 8 years a go and use the wooden ones for coats and jackets that live in my spare room.Hubby doesn’t like the velvet hangers and has kept his wooden hangers.
Bet it feels great to be home and hoping that night cough disappears soon.

    1. Iā€™m so happy to be home! My husband doesnā€™t know about these hangers but Iā€™m going to switch him over šŸ˜‰

    1. I love them and live that so many of my readers confirm it. Try them!

  3. When I first found these I picked up a pack at the Dollar Store. Fell in love with them and decided to switch over my whole closet. Found them by the case at Costco which helped me accomplish that. Love that they take up less space and yes that things donā€™t slip off of them. They even have rounded shaped ones for sweaters. Very happy with them!

    1. I need to switch over my husbands clothes too so will look for them at Costco. Thanks Ruth.

  4. I purchased the Joy Mangano huggable hangers last year and love them. The slimmer shape allows me to store more items in less space. I love that nothing slips off. I put wet items on them all the time to air dry and have never had an issue of bleeding. I love having the same hangers throughout my closet, makes for a more organized look and no tangles of hangers. I also use the 4-bar ones for scarves and for my summer linen pants. I use skirt hangers with clips for skirts and pants. For heavier coats, I have purchased aluminum heavyweight hangers from The Container Store.

  5. The Joy Mangano Hugable Hangers are color fast. When she is on QVC she always mentions that you can put a wet best white blouse on one of her hangers and it will not stain your blouse. I first got generic ones, but Hugable Hangers are so much better.

  6. Thank you for the great closet tip! Iā€™m cleaning out my closet, so the timing is perfect. Just what I need, especially after reading all the reviews.

    1. Theyā€™re awesome. I hope you like them as much as I do.

  7. I switched to all flocked hangers a couple years ago. They not only work great for light weight sweaters and jackets, but all of my tops as well. I have not seen the 4-bar but will look for them. These also make my closet look so much neater and well organized.

    1. Iā€™m not a neat nick but love how organized it makes my closet look!

    Good morning Jennifer,
I found your blog from Tania @50isnotold, and have been reading for about a month or so.
I love those flocked hangers and really do need to purchase more since my clothes are falling off the hangers from some of the old plastic ones Iā€™m still using, thatā€™s for the inspiration! Although Iā€™m really not one who ever comments, I do enjoy reading and following bloggers that I can relate to. A question I have for you and you may or may not wish to respond here but would love your thoughts and/ or input. My husband and I are newly retired and are considering purchasing an RV and I would love to hear more about it all from your experiences. Maybe pros and cons. What size?, Storage? Comfort? Any info is appreciated.
    Have a great day!

    Brenda

    1. Welcome! We live our little trailer. We bought a 28 ft ultralight which was the biggest our SUV could pull. We wanted to try the experience without a massive outlay of money so this was the least expensive. We love it!! To pull anything heavier, we would have needed to buy a pickup and theyā€™re expensive. Weā€™ve talkies about moving up but not sure yet. A lot of state campgrounds donā€™t take large RVs and theyā€™re some of the best places to camp. If you look under my travel tab up top, our other trips should be in there. What are you thinking of getting?

      1. Brenda Ray says:

Thank you! I look forward to reading all your travel posts. :). At this time we are in the very beginning stages of researching RVs. And still not sure if itā€™s for us or not, but weā€™ll never know unless we try it, right!

  9. I love the huggable hangers. I have heavy duty plastic hangers I use for coats and lighter weight plastic (some with foam shoulders ) that I hang dry on. I was afraid of the dampness dissolving whatever adhesive holds the flocking on and was unsure what the base of the flocked hangers was (avoiding rust should it be metal).

    1. Thatā€™s a good idea! Iā€™d worry about the color transferring on the damp shoulders too.

      1. I’ve had these type hangers for years and never had a problem with color transfer. Some left a few fuzziest when they were new, but brushed off easily. Love them!

  10. Yes…I agree flocked hangers are brilliant!

  11. I also bought some at Costco a while back and really like them. I had not come across multi bar hangers . Thanks for the the suggestion of hanging scarves on the those – I am going to try that!
Thanks for posting, Suz from Vancouver

    1. Iā€™m late cathching on to these but glad I finally did! Such a smart design.

  12. Cheryl Ann says:

Well can’t wait to share this with my daughters. I gave them the QVC special of Huggable Hangers for one of their Christmas presents and they thought it was a strange gift. I thought they were perfect! I love flocked hangers and my closet is pretty roomy…enough for wooden hangers if needed…just prefer flocked. On a side note, Jennifer I also gave them some LilySilk pillow cases…BIG hit!

    1. Great minds think alike Cheryl. Theyā€™ve transformed both of our closets as my daughter is cramped for space too!! Those pillow slips are awesome.

  13. I took an enormous bag of plastic hangers to the Salvation Army store as Iā€™ve started switching over to the flocked hangers. Amazon should be delivering another 100 hangers today so I can finish my closet. Apparently Iā€™m in ā€œnesting modeā€ (or have cabin fever!) because Iā€™m cleaning out drawers and cabinets, polishing silver, etc. The husband and pets are looking worried!
PS. Did I sleep through Monday?!?

    1. I did a double take on the day too! But yes, flocked hangers are the best!!!

    2. Lol. Thatā€™s what happens when you write late at night. I need to do some decluttering myself. It feels so satisfying. Happy Monday ????

  14. I bought these at Costco a few years back and really like them. I never knew there were multi bar hangers too, like the idea of hanging scarves on the hanger as well.
Don’t diss the plastic hangers though..they have a purpose! When we bought our Prince Edward Island summer home we were warned to avoid metal hangers as they will rust, I guess a hazard of living beside the ocean?” I did find very sturdy plastic hangers with rubber-y shoulders at Walmart.

    1. Rusting must be a problem for lots of things when you live on the water. But lucky you!! How fabulous.

  15. I switched to flocked hangers a couple of years ago. Love them also. I like your idea about the bar hangers so I ordered those!

    1. Theyā€™re great for scarves which slip off everything else.

  16. Beth Wappler says:

The flocked hangers are great but are still too big for my tops. Amazon has petite sized flocked hangers that are great for that reason. No more hanger marks on the shoulders of my tops.

  17. Anita Jones says:

I switched my closet to all flocked hangers last spring. They are wonderful!

  18. Pat Noakes says:

I have switched to flocked hangers except for heavy coats etc. I couldnā€™t be happier!

  19. Yes! Love them. I only use the wooden ones for my suits and coats. The huggers are grest spacesavers and clothes don’t fall off which used to drive me crazy.
