Monday Musing – A Skin Wake-Up Call

Happy Monday ladies. My weekend seemed to race past which I fear will be the pace for much of the next few weeks. There are so many things on the go and lots to get done that I’ll need to be extra vigilant to schedule in time for self-care.

The self-care for my skin became critically evident when I got home from my trip to Canada and had a look in my 15X magnifying mirror! I travel with this suction cup magnifying mirror but it’s only a 10X which doesn’t tell the true story of my skin.front and back of curology bottle

I’ve been using Curology for several years and love that they can combine ingredients to give me what I need for aging skin and clear skin. I’d requested a recent change of formula to include a stronger percentage of Retinol and before I blinked twice, my skin went into a free fall.

It became dry and dehydrated with lackluster texture and more wrinkles than I’m used to seeing. I upped my water intake while doing a deep dive into skin products and care. I discovered several skincare systems I’m intrigued to learn more about and introduced me to some new products that I added to my regime. In truth, I completely revamped my skincare routine, but that’s for a longer post.tatcha essence, herbivore oil, maelove hylauronic acid

I began patting several layers of this Tatcha Essence to my face and neck immediately after washing. I love the way it feels and my skin seems plumper before I even get to the next step. When that is dry, I swipe on a few drops of this Hydrator B5 Gel which is loaded with hyaluronic acid. Then I add a few drops of my favorite Blue Tansy Oil before I move on to sunscreen. jennifer of a well styled life using the light salon led mask

I’ve also added this LED mask to my regime which I could not love more! Let me just add a few more exclamation points to my endorsement!! This is amazing. I’ve been studying about LED light therapy masks for years and when I came across this one, I knew this was it!the light salon led mask

I’ll have a full review upcoming but it’s selling out almost everywhere so I wanted you to know about it now. I love it so much I just ordered this version for my neck and chest!

My skin is responding quickly to these changes which lets me know it was time for a change. It takes a few extra minutes to add the essence and hyaluronic acid but the effect is amazing. The LED mask? A warm treatment that’s good for my skin and my mood.

I would love to see before and after photos in same lighting. I use the Nuface with Parisian’s Pure Indulgence Organic Skincare with excellent results. But, open to trying a new device.

Those kinds of photos are hard to get. I will try to get a few but I have already been using it for a few weeks. I’ll definitely do it when my neck and chest one arrives.

I recently switched to Beautycounter products only because my dil is a consultant. BC touts all clean products..they are fairly affordable. Their line of countertime products is for us gals with a few years under our belts. So far, I like them, no big difference. I really like their genius lipstick, feels amazing on your lips.

Wow never heard of an LED mask…waiting for more on that. Where did you find a 15X mirror…I only have 10X (a Canadian source or a company that ships to Canada would be best for me….your daughter may know of one)

I agree that drinking a lot of water is good for your skin – no product can cure the problems caused by dehydration. I use Phytomer Rose Visage as a make up remover – love it – then I wash my face with Nutrogena Fresh Foaming Cleanser. I then slather on Ponds – the one with the blue cover. Some of my friends use this old fashioned moisturizer and it works great for them. My Grandma used Castile soap and Vasaline – she had beautiful skin at 82. I think people have to try different things to find out what works best for their skin. You can tell when products are working and when they are not!

Unfortunately for many of us living on retirement income these prices are outrageous. Love your blog for information and ideas but have to find less expensive sources for me or just continue with what I’m using.

We do all have to stay within our budget and there are wonderful products at all price points. The Ordinary is one of my favorite lines with most products under $20. I love their Azelaic Acid, Niacinimide and Buffet.

Walgreens also carries a very affordable product line called Your Good Skin. I have been using their skin balancing serum and several other products in the line. Watch for sale prices also! Another huge, more affordable product that I love is Bio Oil. I use it to gently remove eye makeup. I also dab a few drops on my entire face, before using other moisturizers.

Drinking water does not greatly affect skin hydration, but eating certain fatty acids does. They are found in olive oil, walnuts, fish oil, flaxseed, etc. For skincare I currently use Vitamin C serum with hyaluronic acid, peptides and sunscreen for day, niacinamide and EGF serums, peptides and tretinoin at night. The EGF is a new addition. I’ve also been using red light therapy for years. Orally, I take collagen with HA and Vit. C (oral HA REALLY helps with skin hydration), fish oil and flaxseed.

Can you share your Vit C serum with hyaluronic acid? I love products that do double duty. Which EGF serum do you love? I have used Skin Medica for years but curious about vegan alternatives. I hadn’t thought of taking HA acid orally!! Great tip, Terry.

Just used my first hydrated face mask last night should I have followed up with the usual nightly routine or just a moisturizer

I think that depends on what type of mask and how hydrated you’re skin feels after using it. I wouldn’t wash after using a moisturizing mask but I would use my regular moisturizer. I’d apply my serums, thinnest product, before the mask and let it soak in first.

Thanks fir sharing your new skincare products. Our climate is mostly humid ir damp in winter except for winter months when dew points drop considerably. That’s when my skin looks and feels it’s worst. We are a coastal state so the ocean on two sides helps keep things fairly moderate as far as dryness. I drink tons of water because of kidney stones but I’m not sure that’s 100 effective. I just run to the bathroom more.

It’s funny but I keep reading that if I keep drinking tons of water my body will get used to it so I won’t have to run to the bathroom as often… it hasn’t happened yet 🙂

    Hi Jennifer
I am a huge fan of French cult classic, Caudalie. All natural ingredients based on the power of the grape (resveratrol). When harsh weather comes, I double-up on my use of the luxurious Premier Cru Oil. It feels like a warm hug. Just a few drops smoothed on before face cream (daytime with SPF) feels amazing and absorbs very quickly.

That sounds like a great line. Resveratrol is so good for us internally and externally!!

Good morning, Jennifer. Have you ever heard of Great Scott cream? It is the most wonderful cream in the world! I am not exaggerating. I slather this on my clean face every night, and my complexion is wonderful, especially for a 77 year old! Inexpensive too. Many of my friends and relatives are using this cream after I have gifted them a jar of Great Scott. Check it out at great scottskincare.com. P.S. This cream is excellent for dry heels, elbows, chest, and other winter weather trouble spots too.
