Dressing Room Diary: Stripes and Crops from Talbots for Spring 2024

You can always count on Talbots for lots of stripes. Cropped pants have been trending for several years and they’ve always got that covered too. Here’s a try-on session featuring stripes and crops from Talbots for spring 2024.

dressing room diary is when I go into a local store for a try-on session to show you what’s new and how it looks on a woman over 25. For reference, I am 5’4″ and weigh around 145 lbs. I have broad shoulders, straight hips, a long torso, and long arms. I often wear one size larger on top. I mention what size I’m wearing to help you understand how things run. Most Talbots garments are available in misses, petite, plus, and plus petite.

TAB SLEEVE BLAZER size 6 Reg / BOXY CREWNECK TEE size S reg / WIDE-LEG SAILOR PANTS size 6 reg

This outfit just cries out for a warm spring day. The blazer is a cotton twill blend with spandex for stretch and comfort. It also comes in white or a pretty pink carnation color. It’s sleeves have a button tab so you can fold them up and they’ll stay in place. I’m wearing it over this striped cotton tee in the same peach shade. It’s 100% cotton and has buttons at the back of the neck. The tee has a loose, boxy fit with droppped shoulders and slightly cropped length.

I’m wearing these over a pair of fun sailor pants. These have a side zipper for easy access and the front buttons are ornamental. The cotton canvas fabric is a nice substantial weight. The regular has a 25″ inseam and the petite is 22″. These are available in 4 colors.

JEGGINGS CROP IN ROSA WASH size 8P / SQUARE NECK STRIPE TEE size S reg / EYEGLASS FRAMES

What would spring be, without cropped pants? They’re more popular than ever this year in both narrow and wide legs. These crop jeggings have an inseam of 25″ in misses; 22″ in petite; 25″ in plus, and 22″ in plus petite. I styled the petite because the regular were long enough to look ‘off’ on me. It’s personal preference, but I think a slim jegging looks best when it’s shorter to showcase your ankles.

I styled them with this square neck tee that has 3/4 sleeves. The 3/4 sleeve is a nice combo with the cropped leg. It is in a very smooth, nylon fabric that will pack like a dream. This blue on blue stripe makes the top half of your body appear wider, which is great for ladies with wider hips or ones who want to add visual balance up top. It also comes in navy with white, which I like a lot.

These slim leg ankle jeans are great! I have several pair in this style that are hemmed; these have a frayed hem that’s stiched so it won’t unravel when you wash it. They also have a stiched slit at the side ankle which adds to it’s appeal. These are also available in longs in several sizes with an inseam of 28″ in misses; 30″ in long; 25 1/2″ in petite, and 28″ in plus.

COTTON BLOUSE size PL / SLIM ANKLE JEANS  FLORA WASH size 8P / WATERPROOF ESPADRILLES

I’m wearing them with this lightweight cotton button-up shirt in a pretty print that reminds me of a delph china pattern. The inside of the cuffs are a blue and white stripe, which adds to it’s appeal for me because I like to cuff up my sleeves. The 100% cotton is breathable and very soft making it easy to tie at your waist or tuck in without bulkiness.

I’ve been meaning to share my espadrilles with you. They’re water shoes that I wore for beach walks in Mexico, and they’re so comfy, I just wear them for streetwear now. They come in 7 colors and are perfect for pool walking too!

SHORT SLEEVE DENIM JACKET size SP / STRIPED TEE size MP / PERFECT SHORTS size 8P

This short sleeve denim jacket intrigues me because I like classics with a twist. It has a fitted shape which would be a great third layer over so many things this spring. I love this pale wash as the weather warms up plus it also comes in white here and sunny yellow here. I’m styling a petite small but ended up buying the misses in medium because of my longer torso.

This is the same striped raglan tee I shared here. It’s a super smooth nylon that feels very elevated from cotton. I’m not sure how these will feel in blistering heat but they’ll be fabulous to travel with and look elevated right out of the suitcase.

These are Talbots perfect short’s in indigo blue. They have a 10.5″ inseam in misses and 9.5″ in petite. They’re a timeless style in stretchy cotton twill. The rise hits right at the waist and they’re knee-length. These customer favorite shorts come in 7 colors and are a staple in many women’s summer wardrobe.

STRIPED TEE size MP / PERFECT CROPS size 8P

Same tee shown above, this time I’m styling it with these perfect crops in black. These pants come in 8 colors with an inseam of 26″ in misses; 22 1/2″ in petite; 26″ in plus, and 22 1/2″ in plus petite. These would be fun with sandals but I would steer clear of a chunky sneaker which would chop your foot and make your legs look shorter.

SHORT SLEEVE DENIM JACKET size SP / LACE TRIM SHELL size MP / WIDE LEG TROUSER JEANS size 8P

These wide leg trouser jeans are in a blue and white railroad stripe fabric. I love that they’re slim through the seat and hips then drop to a wide leg that isn’t over powering. The stripe also helps to elongate the leg. I paired them with this lace trim shell that has a woven eyelet front with and knit back in a tee fabric. I wasn’t sure how I would like the top tucked in, but it works well! It was this outfit that convinced me to buy the short sleeve denim jacket :).

Will you be wearing crops and stripes this spring?

  1. Gosh darn it- I purchased a few items at T’s last week. Was going to be good, but may have to order this jean jacket! Its different than any other jean jackets that own me!!!
Cute outfits on you! Thanks for sharing!

    1. That’s why I bought it too. It feels unique but still a jean jacket.

  2. I too love nearly everything you’ve shown from Talbots! ( other stores too!) The exception is that extremely short/ cropped jean jacket. I guess it just doesn’t speak to me personally.
I do want to try on one of their tailored cropped shirts however.

  3. I’m 5’2″. I think wide leg crops are tricky for petites. I was watching a petite YouTuber who said a coat or blazer visually creates a horizontal line at the hem, as does the crops. Horizontal lines chop up your vertical line. If you must wear the crops a better choice is a shorter jacket, with interest at the lapels or neckline. Anything to draw the eye up. It seemed to work on her. Wide legs make me feel frumpy. A slimmer leg always works.

  4. I have capris that fall at that crop length on me. I like the thin railroad stripe pants but don’t care for the patch pockets in the front. How do you like them? I’m sending thoughts to Yvonne going through chemo, again. If color makes it better for you then this year’s colors will make you smile. I too find it very helpful to see clothes on you Jennifer. I have to buy all of my clothes online. Thank you for your great try on this week!

    1. The pockets aren’t something I would use but they add a bit of detail that makes them more casual.

  5. Like the cut of the wide leg trouser jean as well as the sailor pant. As to their fabric content appreciate both are cotton blends; with the latter pant being a plus with its moisture wicking properties of lyocell. That being said though; being able to see and touch the fabric is something I do miss when shopping online. -Brenda-

    1. I agree. There are many brands I love but there isn’t a store near me so I hesitate to buy them. Touching the fabric is so helpful.

  6. I know the scarf store you’re referring to. Aren’t they all gorgeous!
It’s too bad it rained on you but I hope you enjoyed your day regardless.

    1. It’s amazing! I’m anxious to go see the other artists in drier weather.

  7. Love all the Talbot outfits! I’m so glad that tight leg jeans are still ok to wear. I just don’t care for the the wide legs jeans and pants. I’ve learned never to say never though.

    1. You should wear what you love. Some body shapes look better in narrower pants and jeans.

  8. Jeannette says:

Did you see the silk scarves at The Silk Weaving Studio? It’s been years since I’ve been there, but I do remember the beautiful woven silk scarves. I purchased some very special handpainted silk yarn there (SanjoSilk Bombyx Silk) and knit myself a beautiful scarf. It has held up very well and the color is still beautiful and lustrous. Now you’ve got me thinking that I need to place an order at the Silk Weaving Studio since this years’ travel plans do not include Vancouver. Oh yeah, fashion,,,,no crops for me. I have tried several over the years and I just cannot get used to the look on me. Love them on others, but not on me.

    1. She was closed! I’m really anxious to explore it. Hand painted silk yarn makes my heart beat faster. It sounds so delightful.

  9. I will be wearing stripes in natural fabrics but not crops in any fabric. The jean jacket looks cute, but I can’t imagine a situation where I’d want a denim jacket with short sleeves so that my upper arms are warm and my lower arms are cold.

  10. I am loving all the outfits you’ve shown the last 2 posts Jennifer. This is a really good fashion year. I intend to add a lot more colour to my spring/summer wardrobe as I’m beginning another 6 cycles of chemotherapy next Friday and last time I went through this, I felt better wearing colour instead of nuetrals.

    1. Sending prayers and hugs your way Yvonne. I’m so sorry you’ll be dealing with this again. Colour is so uplifting. XO

  11. Thank you Jennifer for your TALBOTS dressing room try on, I shop online, so seeing you try on clothing helps so much. I love the look of the railroad stripe pants with the lace camisole and short sleeve denim jacket, definitely a winner.

    1. I thought it was a fun combo too. I’m appreciative of you shopping through my links.

  12. Great outfits from Talbot’s.
I will be wearing stripes but not crops.
