Weekend Reading 04.13.24

Well, I spoke too soon about spring. We’re due for rain and a drop in temps that’ll put me back to shoes-with-socks weather. Hopefully, it’ll just be a blip because I’m stoked for warmer weather and have already begun switching my wardrobe over. In fact, I’ve been thinking about what I’ll want to wear when the temperature hits the triple digits which I know I’ll hate when it happens.

I KNOW THESE LINEN PIECES WHICH ARE OVER 20 YEARS OLD WILL COME OUT OF THE CLOSET AGAIN.

This hair serum arrived and I am psyched to try it! It contains similar hair growth prostaglandins as Latisse, but it’s formulated for hair so I’ll be using it along my hairline. I’ll keep you posted.

I did some ‘window’ shopping yesterday and bought this House On The Hill sleep set at our newest local store. I’ve been wearing and loving these Cool Nights for many years but I’m looking forward to 100% cotton!

I ran into a gal this week who asked if women still read blogs. Are they dead? What say you? Why do you read them vs just spending your time on social media?

Fashion on my radar this week

  1. Jennifer, I don’t do social media and yours is the only blog I read. I look forward to reading it every day. I do not post many comments but I do enjoy all that you post. This is a wonderful community, I learn so much from you and your readers. It is very validating to share experiences with ladies of the same age and interests.

    1. It is a great community! Thanks for being part of it.

  2. Yes, I love your blog. I only follow a few and yours is in my top 3. This outfit today is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! Thanks for all your posts. Eager to hear about your hair serum. Thanks!

  3. Oh, I read a lot of blogs…and try to post often on my blog. I read all kinds – fashion ( like yours, which gives such good advice and ideas), as well as recipes, organizing, travel, and books – as I love to read. Keep on posting, please !

  4. I do not do social media since I was hacked on FB on 2022. I read your blog and love it. I order more from your links than perhaps any other blog. I don’t read that many, but love your style and your spirit. I hope you never quit, but certainly, feel free to take days off when you feel like. I will be right back with you when you are back. Thank you!

    1. Thank you so much for ordering through my links, Mary. Not planning to quit anytime soon,

  5. I read two blogs, yours and Pamela Lutrells. I’m rarely on social media anymore. Too many ads for products and not much from my family anymore. I find your blog interesting and I agree, it is like a conversation with an intelligent friend everyday. Tea and Jennifer. I agree that you should take time off for yourself and you family from the blog. No one works 7 days a week! I also enjoy reading the comments from all of your followers. We are a community of women that gathers every morning over tea or coffee to visit with you.

    1. I love that description. It would be fun to meet for tea IRL!

  6. Much prefer the blogs as I do not have facebook, instagram, and spend my time with the ones I really like. Seems like so much time can be wasted just scrolling.
I love that linen outfit and cannot believe you have been wearing it that long.
I enjoy the interesting articles you find for the weekend posts… thanks

    1. I bought this back when my son was in high school and I was managing a high-end boutique. That was one fun job!!

  7. I hope your not going to quit your blog. I really look forward to reading them and learning about fashion and everything you discuss. I have a few other blogs I like about recipes and decorating. Im on FB and Instagram but blogs are interesting to me.

    1. Nope! I have no plans to quit.

  8. Another Gayle says:

The first Gayle expressed what I was thinking, so I’ll just say “ditto” to her comment.

  9. Keep blogging – yours is especially helpful to me. Question: what size do you order in the athleta Brooklyn pants? Thanks for all you do to keep us informed.

    1. I have size 6 and 8 but learned they look better more fitted so now just order the 6. I still wear my 8’s but they’re not as flattering.

    2. I’m wearing a pair right now! 5’6”, 138 – I find they run really large so wear a 4T but could easily go down a size. I’m usually a 6-8nso this is vanity sizing at its most ridiculous

  10. Colette Ulliac says:

As a fellow Canadian , I’m really grateful for your blog . I live in a small rural community in Alberta and don’t have many interactions with women my age. I learn so much from you and whenever I copy your style , I get lots of compliments . Thank-you so much for what you do !

    1. That’s cool! I’m happy to share ideas.

  11. Hi Jenifer , I only read two blogs faithfully yours and Susan after 60. You both are streamlined for ladies at a certain age. Your blogs are sensible but anything but dowdy , you tap into modern trends but never look silly, nothing worse than mutton dressed as lamb. Your make up is pretty with out looking like it’s
Plastered on with a trowel . I really don’t like heavy kohl eyeliner on older women it looks garish .
My complaint about my two lovely American bloggers NONE just don’t stop please, but hey take
time out for holidays or trips etc but send one or two posts so us followers can experience a bit of your fun and super advice on outfits accessories for trips or holidays . I follow one UK blogger but not with much enthusiasm as my beautiful American ladies.
    Regards

    1. You are the so kind, Pamela. Thanks so much

  12. I love blogs! Yours and themodernmrsdarcy are my favorites! I get to read something interesting to me that someone has actually “thought” about. Much, much better than random rantings or videos on social media, which are time sinks that I avoid like the plague.

Thanks so much for your blog, Jennifer!

    1. Thanks so much for reading and being part of our community, Terry

  13. I still read a number of blogs because I find them more informative than Instagram, although I am very active there. I think blogs are more in-depth and you feel like you know the person through the personal tidbits added in.

  14. I so look forward to your messages – they’re so thoughtful and relevant to my life. I have to comment on your outfit in today’s message. It’s absolutely the perfect summer look – one colour, linen, straw bag, finished a fun and imaginative piece of jewelry. You look like someone I’d love to share a fun, thoughtful and stimulating coffeetime with.

    1. I’ll likely wear this look exactly the same way when it warms up. I still own all of it except the sandals which I think I left at a hotel on holiday.

  15. Christi S. says:

Thank you for posting your blog. I only read two blogs: your’s and Une Femme d’un Certain Âge (Susan Blakey). You’re both 65+, petite, and Californian. I’m none of those but appreciate the style information. You and Susan write an intelligent post and I learn much from each of you. As for social media? Who has time for those rabbit holes? I check Facebook every 2-3 months. Most of it I can live without. My addiction is news sites. I’m an information junkie. Have a great weekend, stay warm and dry, and hope that Mother Nature gets back on her meds so the weather is less schizophrenic.

    1. I love Susan’s blog, and always have! She’s a great writer and so funny in person.

  16. Like blogs, especially yours. Seems like focus on is less on buy, buy and on information and fun.

  17. Cheryll Sampson says:

Yes. I read several blogs, and the bloggers like you feel like personal friends. I learn so much and keep current with factual information. Thank you.

  18. Jennifer, I love your blog; please don’t stop! It is a perfect balance of helpful information and a community atmosphere. I read yours daily, and another one I receive twice weekly. I am not on social media; I don’t want to live my life on a screen.

    1. Social media is a necessary evil in my business or I would not be on it either

  19. Hi Jennifer! I have a list of blogs that I read daily, mostly written by women “of a certain age” like myself. I enjoy learning about personal style as well as about home decor. I look forward to spending time with my blogs each morning along with my coffee!

  20. Karen Nau says:

I just found you through your blogger friend, Tania. I found her during the pandemic, when I had to learn to shop online. It was like talking to a new friend when I was stuck at home, not able to socialize with my friends, in person. When I discovered you were in Northern California, I was so excited to follow you.

    1. Tania is one of my besties! She and I chat several times a week and I adore her.

  21. Social media vs blogs? 0% to 100%
And your blog is one of my favorites.

  22. Please Jennifer, don’t stop blogging. I look forward to reading your posts daily, along with a few others. I am not on tiktok, instagram, etc. as I don’t need any more screen time. Your blogs are so well researched and have been very helpful in many ways. Keep up the good work.

    1. Thanks Marcia. I really enjoy the process and relationships I feel we’ve built in this community. I’m not planning to stop anytime soon but I may slow down for holidays.

  23. Stephanie says:

Yes, I still read blogs. I try to limit time on social media.

  24. I like to read blogs as a way of keeping current in styles of dress and decor. Yours is fabulous, by the way!

  25. Our weather has been up and down – we had a few warm days and I was able to golf. And now we’re back to rain and cold and the courses have closed due to flooding!
As for blogs, I still read yours daily and a few Canadian and British that I check into occasionally.

    1. I wish I had time to read more blogs. There are some very clever women writing these days.

  26. I read blogs because I can read. I don’t do social media. It is fast and just skims the surface and seems to be all about being nasty. Blogs I read, very few – who has the time – tell stories, take the time to explain, teach. The ones I read are like a conversation with a friend or colleague.

    1. I also prefer them to social media.
